It is now nearly 7.30am and their car alarm has been going off outside the bedroom window since midnight. I am sat waiting to see who claims it...this will not be pretty!

Its been going off since midnight!!
The owner is not one of your neighbours then, or they would have heard it surely.
Good luck OP, tho do try not to get yourself arrested!

SoupDragon · 03/02/2011 08:17

You would be unreasonable to do it because it would not stop the alarm going off. I agree - it clearly can't belong to a neighbour.

Tiredmumno1 · 03/02/2011 08:18

You should have given the police a call on the non emergency number, they may have been able to trace the owner

CockularDepravity · 03/02/2011 08:27

As above, in non-emergency situations a call to the local police will be far better than having to be interviewed by them for committing a crime.

Why are you posting this on the internet and not speaking to the owner of the car and/or the police? Passive/aggressive doesn't even come close.

GlynistheGimmer · 03/02/2011 08:31

SoupGDragon, that's exactly what I thought too.

Put the window in, that'll set the alarm off Confused

Cock, I think the OP is making conversation, need another coffee per chance Smile

*puts machine back on

GlynistheGimmer · 03/02/2011 08:47

apols for the extra G there SoupDragon

more coffee needed here too Smile

kazmus · 03/02/2011 08:48

tried the local police at 4 am and noise abatement as well, they said if i get the owners address they'll write them a letter. It is now 8.45 am and the bloody things still going! I only said I' wanted to put the windows in not actually do it! How do you speak to the owner if you dont know who it belongs to?

some people will always take this kinda question literally.. most of us take them as tongue in cheek

I thought all modern alarms cut off afer soo long as noise abatement thing

I know if you report a house alarm the police are obliged to turn up and check the property- clearly different with cars!

hope the owner turns up soon..

SuchProspects · 03/02/2011 11:07

The police aren't obliged to check out house alarms and several forces will only respond to certain types of alarms unless there is also evidence that a crime has been committed (in which case they'd turn up without the alarm anyway).

Environmental health are the ones who have responsibility for noise problems - unfortunately it seems the OPs council is a bit pathetic at enforcement.

kazmus call your councilor and rant at them. You could also try writing the car owner a nice little note on their windscreen in lipsalve - just to let them know there alarm isn't working properly.

nomoreheels · 03/02/2011 11:11

I've reported a car alarm to Environmental Health by giving them the plate details - that was enough to trace the owner. How on earth are you meant to work out who it belongs to?

I would go back to Env Health as they're fobbing you off a bit.

It's very frustrating to have noise for that long, I feel for you.

PatriciaHolm · 03/02/2011 11:18

Console yourself with the fact that by the time they get back to it, it will have a flat battery....

GlynistheGimmer · 03/02/2011 11:24

just had a thought.. (knew the coffee would kick in sooner or later)

if it's not a neighbours car, is it parked in a totally residential area?

call the police again and report it being dumped?

kazmus · 03/02/2011 11:28

thanks for the support...loved the lipsalve idea! Appears quite a few neighbours have now contacted police and they have taken action in tracing owner. Alarm is now off although they are still parked in a reserved residential bay despite not living here...heigh ho at least we'll get some sleep tonight.
