to keep buying crap umbrellas ?

About 12 years ago I bought a compact umbrella for peanuts.
It was not fancy, it just worked .... for 10 years.

In the last 2 years I've bought 5 ranging £2-10. They all looked like they were going to fall to pieces when I opened them up, and surprise, surfuckingprise they did.
The latest £4 one from Sainsbury, is flapping around like a banner at Lower Loxley, in the most moderate breeze, so I will be on to number 6 pretty soon.

Where in the name of planned obsolescence, can you get decent, single telescopic compact umbrella these days ?Angry

I haven't owned an umbrella for abut 10 years.

They blow inside out, they blow away, you can't do anything else while holding the sodding thing. What do you do with it when you get to work - it just makes your legs wet under your desk or your coat wet in a cupboard?

Buy a really good quality waterproof with a peak-capped hood and good quality waterproofed walking boots.

Umbrellas are the work of Satan. Along with hairdryers, jelly and daleks.

Thanks pink.

But I just want one that works.

Which one ?

oh gosh I dont know! There are so many there! I have given up with umbrellas in plymouth, except for the very domed ones, they look like a little pod, and they dont get as moved in the wind :)

MackerelOfFact · 02/02/2011 12:24

I feel your pain! I have purchased umbrellas from most high street shops, and they're all crap. My only tip would be the 99p shop/Poundland who sell them for, well, 99p/£1. At least then you can afford to replace it every month if need be for the same price as one from Accessorize or somewhere.

In the last couple of years I've been through umbrellas from Debenhams, Wilkinson, Primark, Accessorize, Asda, Superdrug and Sports Direct.

I suspect the long ones are better but I know I'd just leave them somewhere (or forget to ever take them out) so no point really.

you need this one
Don't know how much it is though.

Bluebell99 · 02/02/2011 12:33

I love my umbrella. I think it is a totes one that I got in the boots sales about three years ago, but the best thing about it is it has a torch in the handle so you can see where you are going in the dark! How cool is that?! I am terrified I am going to lose it one day and will never be able to replace it.

bubblewrapped · 02/02/2011 12:36

I lose umbrellas, usually within the first time of using them, so would never buy an expensive one..

thumbdabwitch · 02/02/2011 12:38

Yup, YABU. Get one of these and then you'll never want to lose it anywhere. :)

Katisha · 02/02/2011 12:38

Having lost/broken every umbrella I have every owned, I now have a very waterproof coat with a hood that doesn't blow down.
(Merrell Wakefield...)

cumfy · 02/02/2011 12:38

Just £135 borders.
My quest is over. :o
