At the amount of money vets charge?!

My beautiful cat has a horrific tail injury that needs amputation tomorrow :(

It happened on Sunday and because vets don't work sunday this falls in 'emergency'.

£100 to come out WITH NO TREATMENT
Where the hell are they driving from?!
New York?!! Angry

The operation will cost £200 plus £68 for pain relief and antiobiotic.

Plus £13 for the vet to collect her from home as we can't wrestle her into a carrier.

I am so cross about this!

The fees are extornate.
There must be an awful lot of people who simply can't pay the ludicrous fees they charge?!

Why after studying for 6 years should they be poor ? Very silly attitude from the op to be honest

steps101 · 01/02/2011 18:58

"Vets do take advantage and its not fair. People shouldn't keep just accepting it."

So what should they do then?

OhForBoonessSake · 01/02/2011 19:01

OP when you eat at an expensive restaurant. do you complain afterwards about the price even though it was plain to see on the menu, you just chose not to look at it before ordering? do you accuse the restaurant of taking advantage or do you say "i never realised that place was so expensive, i should have checcked before we booked"

PenguinArmy · 01/02/2011 19:04

prices seem quite reasonable to me

I got a kitten, years ago, from the Cats Protection League; turned out she had FIE. I spent enough send every single one of the 3 Ozzie vets who treated her back to Australia. They saved her though.

I think for what the OP is getting the price is rather low. I have happily paid more for less at our Vets.

ApocalypseCheeseToastie · 01/02/2011 19:49

Yeah, wielding a pair of glorified pliers costs a fortune in energy costs, and must be replaced each time [bhmm] and bearing in mind the cheaper vets was on a 'nicer' street i'd be very surprised if the rip off merchant vets rent was any more being down a grotty side street [bhmm]

It's a simple case of morals imo, cheapo vet can't justify charging 40 quid to spend 2 second nipping a rabbits front teeth, and it was me who held bunny still, so no vetrinary nurse.

I'm taking my two toms to get neutered next month, that's only costing 80 quid each ffs, and no I don't resent paying it.

Needanewname · 01/02/2011 21:43

ACT I take it that the more expensive vets didn;t do the work outside that it was done in a building - there's one overhead, then there are staff wages, electricity, water, gas, general equipment costs do I need to go on?

You felt it expensive so chose to go elsewhere where they charge you less - great, you are now happy all is good.

There are costs associated with owning a pet, if you can't afford it don't have one (btw - that bit wasn't for ACT but for everyone complaining about vets fees!)

curlymama · 01/02/2011 22:01

YABsoU, I can't actually believe you might be for real.

Do you think Vet's training is worth nothing?

Do you want someone that hasn't trained for a number of years to be cutting open your beloved pet and treating it?

Do you want your pet to be treated in the appropriate surroundings with all the medical equipment and medication neccesary to hand?

Have you honestly never considered the posibility that your cat could injure itself in some way? Be run over, or get into a fight with another animal, or any of the other perfectly reasonable possibilities.

Do you think vets should work for frr just because they like animals and you want to own one? Or are they not entiled to earn a decent wage?

Someone with your attitude really shouldn't be allowed to keep a pet.
