To not actually know what social class I am?

Their seems to be a lot of middle class vs working class vs chav etc on AIBU. So what criteria do you need to fill in order to be in one of these?

Maybe all the knowledgable MN's out there can help, so I can behave accordingly?

Education - Uni
Job - Public sector worker (wage £23000 pa)
Married - Yes
Child - One
Age I became a mother - Mid-twenties
BF? - Was crap at it, gave up at 6 weeks
Home - Average 3 bed semi (owned) in non-posh, non-rough area

Other suggestions for class criteria welcomed Grin

yes, Lequeen. But class posers are ten a penny. And sending out a few signals can help.

A young bloke I knew yeats ago, put posh labels in his cheap clothes. And told people his grandad was "A count."

thats how I remember it, anyway. "Gabby"

Hullygully · 01/02/2011 16:43

Vair true, Fellatio. Tis only manners, not inclusiveness and bohemian disregard.

tinkertitonk · 01/02/2011 16:44

I am a mathematician.

I subtract O from count.

Greythorne · 01/02/2011 16:45

LeQueen
tut tut, typos can and should be forgiven on MN
but not when you are purposely dropping in forrin words to prove you are a cut above working class

it's parvenu

I am half-posh, half-common.

Luckily Ocado stock Fruit Shoots.

If, in my family, you uttered a word of criticism about someone's sexual history / substance abuse / violence / criminal record / cruelty to animals, you would be leaped on and condemned as a hypocrite, a judgmental prude and an empathy-free, snobbish curtain twitcher.

If that same person said 'settee' instead of sofa or held their knife like a pen however - they would be totally fair game.

You all need to declare yourselves on the BBC's Great British Class Survey:
"Does class still matter? If so, what does Britain's real class system look like? Help us find out and discover the three factors that affect your life chances."

Some very unobvious Qs in the survey.

Unless you own the means of production, everyone's the proletariat anyway. No matter how many Heals sofas you own.

If you and your parents went to public school you are middle class (or upper). Going to an ex-poly to study media studies does not make you middle class.

Had no idea serviette was frowned upon.

I will enjoy using the word constantly when visiting the PIL in future :)

QueenBathsheba · 01/02/2011 18:28

If you need to work, you are working class.

Of those that don't work there are two types, those that have no need to and those that really should.

I don't work because I don't need to because DH does, he he! he's dragging the coal in and scrubbing the floor as I type Wink

Why oh why is this so important?

Does it make people feel comfortable to be labelled?

I really don't care. I have friends who've done very well for themselves. I have friends who've married men who have done very well for themselves. I have friends who struggle.

QueenBathsheba · 01/02/2011 19:48

Generally speaking if you haven't inherited your furniture and you can see your sofa for the lack of dogs you will be lower middle at mostGrin

kittycat37 · 01/02/2011 19:53

LeQueen

I think I am your class inverse image:

Went to comprehensive.
Went to Cambridge.
Became a classical musician.
Married another classical musician.
We love wine, radio 4, waitrose, the National Theatre, art, michelin starred restaurants, literature, political debate.

But we have NO MONEY.

Educationally - middle class.

Financially - in the gutter.

So we don't get to exercise our MC-ness (except the free stuff like radio 4).

QueenBathsheba · 01/02/2011 20:07

Do you say Pardon or do you say what?

minxofmancunia · 01/02/2011 20:16

I'm confused about this,

Vicars daughter, grew up in draughty vicarage with PhD educated Father and zero cash
Went to comprehensive and local 6th form
3 degrees
Work as a nurse/therapist £36k
Live in affluent sort(sp?) after postcode
own own house with DH
Have 2 cars but very average cars
Go to France once a year and a couple of weekends camping in Peaks/Wales
Love yoga, theatre, growing own veg, cinema, meals out art other culture stuff.

Hate big tvs and flashy displays of wealth, hate logo'd designer crap, Alderley Edge hurts my soul, see places like that as not mc at all.

DH is v working class, used to eat white bread and butter and ketchup with everything. but he's married up Grin

MrsGuyOfGisbourne · 01/02/2011 20:16

Interesting. Why do people need to classify themselves? Mystifying. Do other nationlalities obsess over this? (Maybe I am not really British? (despite being several genreations back born and lived in the UK).
