To not actually know what social class I am?

Their seems to be a lot of middle class vs working class vs chav etc on AIBU. So what criteria do you need to fill in order to be in one of these?

Maybe all the knowledgable MN's out there can help, so I can behave accordingly?

Education - Uni
Job - Public sector worker (wage £23000 pa)
Married - Yes
Child - One
Age I became a mother - Mid-twenties
BF? - Was crap at it, gave up at 6 weeks
Home - Average 3 bed semi (owned) in non-posh, non-rough area

Other suggestions for class criteria welcomed Grin

no it dousnt. i know loads of working class people with degrees. i would suggest it would have more to do with which university you attended and what you read there.lol

Not sure what Me and wife are

She has Degree but not working
We own our house
Have nice car
2 children
1 or 2 holidays a year (1 abroad the other is camping)
Me - no eduction, from a rough background but run my own company
let the children have as much fruitshoots as possible

Im confused is my wife middles class and im I working class?

Hassled · 01/02/2011 14:32

You haven't said what your parents did/earned/type of house you grew up in/what newspapers they read/did you have books/did you have foreign holidays. That's how you determine class (if you care, which I don't).

Ihavebeencreditcrunched · 01/02/2011 14:33

hmmm...I always think I am working class! Hmm now i'm not sure.

Married with 2 kids.
own 2 ex council houses

Work PT for NHS £9k PA
DH works in construction £20k PA
Haven't had a holiday since 05

?????

Hassled · 01/02/2011 14:33

Neither did I until recently. DS1 came home from school and announced that we are MC because of our jobs.

So there we are.... Grin

MrSpoc · 01/02/2011 14:38

Following from my post Hassled

My mum and dad not together since i was five, dad never worked, mum had two jobs (bar functions manager & working with dissabled kids)

from a very bad area of Manchester
Only one holiday abroad to France when i was 10 (went with friends family)
I love reading (maily Harry Potter type books, lord of the rings, Maria V Snyder books etc)

Wife
Her mum and dad both teachers

She did have piano lessons but failed grade 1

Maybe their's a points system? You know like
10 points for wearing Boden
-10 points for Primark
5 points for reading the Guardian
etc?

TheDogAteIt · 01/02/2011 14:43

BTW, I don't spend my nights worrying about what class I'm in, It's as a result of a light hearted discussion in the pub a nice coffee shop with friends. Thought it was interesting....failed again...

If you have fish knives - you are middle class (fish knives were a Victorian invention)

If you don't have fish knives bceause your cutlery is inherited from the georgians - well then you are upper class.

If you don't have fish knives and don't give a rat's ass because you never eat fish unless it is battered from the chippy - you are working class (and this is me)

Middle class - save money for something sensible like school fees, pension etc.

Working class- save money for a great big blow out at Chriostmas or a fantastic holiday.

Hassled · 01/02/2011 14:48

MrSpoc - your wife is Middle Class. I'm a bit thrown by you - I was going to say Working, but the jobs your mother had were quite highly skilled, which makes me think Middle too. And you got your love of reading from somewhere.

But this is INSANE, isn't it? Does it matter? I know all about class and class distinctions - I can even break down Middle into Upper Middle, Middle Middle and Lower Middle. But WTF is the point? Of all the pointless "knowledge" I have this really is the most pointless.
