to be miffed that having just discovered 'The Tudors' it has turned out to be mostly b0ll0cks?

Saw (and was excited to learn of)'The Tudors' on BBC2.

Should I just enjoy it for the glamorised, sexed-up version of history that it is?

Should I watch it whilst quietly seething at the extent of the historical inaccuracies?

Should I give it a miss altogether?

If I watch, will it forever alter my perception of Tudor times and leave me with a lasting image of Tudors all with pretty hair & make-up, and lovely white teeth.

Even Anne of Cleves has lovely twinkly eyes and a pretty smile. (Although, they did decide to go along with Henry's "She looks like a horse" line anyway - quite amusing when she so clearly doesn't).

Mists Grin I've always thought poor Catherine P must have felt bloody awful when Henry decided he wanted her. Hardly love's young dream by that stage. Think he came very close to hauling her off to the Tower once or twice.

Frizz, v. good point about Mary and Elizabeth's different childhoods and different reigns. You have to admire Elizabeth for sheer survival, let alone managing to become such a successful monarch. But I do get very irritated with Mary QoS - every ruddy decision she ever made was a disaster. Daft mare.

Zukie, I think there are letters that show Mary was well aware of the plots - although some of them have been claimed as forgeries, there are plenty of others. And there's a big difference between thinking you are the rightful heir and seizing the crown by force - especially when you've been thrown out of your own kingdom you are so unpopular. She really should have known when to stop...

Forget its supposed to be historical, and think of it as the Henry Cavill show: works for me Wink

Grin mists
I'm now even more gutted I have missed this series so far. When's it on?

iirc Catherine P quite wanted to marry Thomas seymore but had to postpone those plans when Henry decided he wanted to marry her himself. Thomas was I think fairly dashing and of course Henry was rather foul by then. But she really wouldn't have had a choice.

Not that the subsequent marriage to Thomas S worked out well either...

And yes I think that on at least one occasion H almost had Catherine P sent to the tower. Seemed to be his way of dealing with a wife who so much as looked at him the wrong way.

BTW who is this Hans I should be lusting after???

edam · 01/02/2011 23:02

cake, I seem to recall that Tom S was Up To No Good with Princess Elizabeth. Poor old Catherine...

persephonesnape · 01/02/2011 23:25

i have his phone number. I am not open to bribery. I'm a fiercely protective wee soul.

darleneconnor · 01/02/2011 23:31

I think the girl who plays Princess Mary is good. I always thought her character was quite unpleasent. Is this another innaccuracy?

RMCW · 02/02/2011 10:20

persephone how do you control yourself???????? I would be forever ringing to hear his melifluous tones Grin

TyraG · 02/02/2011 12:10

Ooh Oded Fehr bow chica bow wow

Mists · 05/02/2011 21:50

Mary is cold but curiously sweet. I wish I could master that graceful demeanour when I am pissing someone off.

Terribly awful childhood and youth again so you can see why she was like that. She is getting more bitter and brittle as the series goes on while still showing her vulnerability Sad

Anyway, it's on again in a minute so BUMP and let the low-brow discussions resume:

Does anyone fancy that complete twat Culpepper, for example?
