Saw (and was excited to learn of)'The Tudors' on BBC2.

Should I just enjoy it for the glamorised, sexed-up version of history that it is?

Should I watch it whilst quietly seething at the extent of the historical inaccuracies?

Should I give it a miss altogether?

If I watch, will it forever alter my perception of Tudor times and leave me with a lasting image of Tudors all with pretty hair & make-up, and lovely white teeth.

Even Anne of Cleves has lovely twinkly eyes and a pretty smile. (Although, they did decide to go along with Henry's "She looks like a horse" line anyway - quite amusing when she so clearly doesn't).

Boff - Sorry but history is based on definative accounts and/or preserved evidence. Thatsubject matter is perfectly accurate as far as it goes - the difference is in the interpretation based on it by the audience - who themselves have a place in the historical narrative - and the bias of the accounts. It's just not right to say history is inaccurate - makes it sound like a fairy tale.

KaraStarbuckThrace · 31/01/2011 19:03

History is written by the winners.

And historians will all be affected by their own perspectives and cultural bias.

I bet the real history won't be as titillating.
I watch this series to be entertained, not necessarily to be educated.

Remember Rome, that was pretty raunchy and bloody, broadly accurate in terms of events but I think they must have taken a lot of liberties with the personalities of the players involved.

Ieattoomuchcake · 31/01/2011 19:10

Oh I Didn't realise there was another series on.

I really enjoyed series 1 and 2 Blush
totally historically inaccurate but lots of fun I thought

I cried in the Anne Boleyn execution episode. More at the poor swan than anything else. In my defence I was pregnant at the time.

And I agree Charles Brandon phwoargh
I also quite like JRM as good old Henry.

I thought the third series wasn't as good but probably because the really dishy stuff is mainly Anne B related...

justcarrots29 · 31/01/2011 19:12

Oh I loved Rome and I love Tudors - no it is not accurate but it is bloody entertaining. I love a good historical romp fest Grin.

BoffinMum · 31/01/2011 19:14

Depends who is writing the history, what you get ... all history is interpretation of one kind or another.

Ieattoomuchcake · 31/01/2011 19:19

Well I doubt we would be viewing Anne B half as positively as we do if Elizabeth had never been queen.

If either Edward or Mary had had children, I doubt history would have said much about her beyond the standard 'she's a harlot/witch' chat of the time

belgo · 31/01/2011 19:21

I saw one episode, it was dreadful. and gave me nightmares, a man was dipped into a vat of boiling oil. Horrible.

bettybosseye · 31/01/2011 19:23

It is supposed to be an entertaining drama not a history lesson.

Is anyone else having problems watching Saturday night's episode on iplayer? Hmm It's telling me it's not available...

BendyBob · 31/01/2011 19:31

Henry VIII's image is so recognisable though it really grates on me that they don't seem to have made even the slightest effort to make that chap that plays him look even a little bit like him.

I read an interview with him in a tv guide the other day and he said that being big like Henry 'wouldn't suit my frame'. Gawd help us - you're an actor..Wear a bit of padding fgsHmm

It just comes across as Hollyoaks in tights tbh.

Mists · 31/01/2011 19:32

It was really funny when Henry asked Thomas More "how many have you burnt" and he looked really shifty.

Not so funny seeing it happen.

But the costumes and sets are outstanding. Especially when there is snow. Beautiful costumes and beautiful people.

I know a bit about this period in history but also have Wikipedia Wrongipedia up when I am watching so I can get background on the various nobles but it can get confusing.

DH, however not about to be outdone, has come up with the Tudors "knobbing game" Hmm Grin

I just did:

"Robert was seized and imprisoned in 1112. He spent the rest of his life in prison; the exact date of his death is not known"

HOWEVER:

"Robert lost his English lands and titles (as did his brothers), was banished from England, and returned to Normandy" Shock Shock Shock

Horrible, I agree!

Oh I didn't see any of that zukiecat, DH must have safe Google search on for the kids. What a cunt that man was. Banishing to Normandy was too good for him.

Gleekfreak · 31/01/2011 21:32

Henry VIII had a fall during a jousting accident in 1536, and suffered a serious head injury. After this his behaviour changed - he became paranoid, cruel and would lose his temper very easily. The shock caused poor Anne Boleyn's miscarriage and sealed her doom (she'd already given birth to Elizabeth - definitely not a boy) So it's possible that the brain injury and the pain in his ulcerated leg was why he was so dreadful in his later years.

One of the biggest ironies of history though that he spent so much effort, and so many suffered because of his desperate need to get a legitimate son and it was his daughter Elizabeth who was his real legacy.

Frizzbonce · 31/01/2011 22:32

zukiecat I glanced at your last posting about Mists de Belleme and thought it said Mr Bellend!

Yes I've always been amazed at Elizabeth's outstanding strength of character given what must have been an absolutely horrific childhood and youth. Absolutely agree.
