Saw (and was excited to learn of)'The Tudors' on BBC2.

Should I just enjoy it for the glamorised, sexed-up version of history that it is?

Should I watch it whilst quietly seething at the extent of the historical inaccuracies?

Should I give it a miss altogether?

If I watch, will it forever alter my perception of Tudor times and leave me with a lasting image of Tudors all with pretty hair & make-up, and lovely white teeth.

Even Anne of Cleves has lovely twinkly eyes and a pretty smile. (Although, they did decide to go along with Henry's "She looks like a horse" line anyway - quite amusing when she so clearly doesn't).

Mary Queen of Scots rather asked for it, though. Ruddy woman would NOT stop plotting to overthrow Elizabeth. She was only executed after the umpteenth plot and even then Elizabeth hesitated again and again over signing the order - to the huge frustration of her ministers.

One of the characteristics that marks out Elizabeth from the other 16th Century monarchs is her reluctance to have people killed.

My daughters doing the Tudors at school, seen it on the guide last week and asked if she could record it. Said yes no problem i will. Thank god i watched it and didnt just give her it, god knows what she would have said to the class.

It's nice to see all the Henry Cavill love going on here. He's a hottie of the first order!

I watched it (mostly on iTunes during our time in France) and enjoyed the fun of it. I will say that watching it got me interested in the Tudors and subsequently I read Mary Tudor and am looking to read more about them.

RMCW · 01/02/2011 10:09

sigh.....HC is beautiful

He remind me of a young Paul Newman.

Just beautiful

Edam I've always felt sorry for Mary Queen of Scots. It would have been extremely difficult for anybody to rule that unruly stinky beardy band of Scots, all of whom were very anti the idea of a young woman 'a chit' as John Knox described her, coming over from France to tell them what to do. She made a terrible mistake in marrying Darnley, but there is scant evidence that she actually murdered him, and yes she did plot against Elizabeth but it's likely that the Babington Plot, the one that done it for her, was a trap set by one of Elizabeth's advisors. And she did believe truly that she was the rightful heir of England.

However, Mary had a lovely childhood, spoiled and pampered in the French court whereas Elizabeth had to fight for her life on several occasions and learned survival and the art of politics because of her fractured upbringing. Her mother and stepmother were murdered and she spent time in the tower. Perhaps a shitty childhood prepared you for monarchy better than a nice safe secure one? And it was Elizabeth who said: 'Better a beggar woman and single than a Queen and married!'

Grin at highbrow thread about historical inaccuracies descending into "phwwwoooarrrgghh wouldn't kick him out of bed for eating a Pombear biscuit" discussion.

Very enjoyable though. I bloody love Mumsnet.

RMCW · 01/02/2011 15:09

Ah, older men. Yes. I rather like the one who plays Thomas Seymour too. Hell, I like all of them! If I had to choose any of them it would have to be HC though.

I know Bradley James is too young but I cant help myself. He could roger me senseless and then I could make him a cottage pie to feed him up a bit Blush for more rogering Blush

I apologise unreservedly for bringing down the tone of the thread Blush Grin

Just dont get me started on the Twilight actors!!!!

TyraG · 01/02/2011 15:57

Ooh RCMW you mentioned Twilight. Personally I think Billy Burke (Bella's father) is really hot. Especially when he was on Rizzoli & Isles. Yummy!!!

Oded Fehr- Yes

Antony Head- No

Should we start a new thread??? Grin

persephonesnape · 01/02/2011 18:04

RMCW Hans is lovely, witty, an extremely accomplished musician and has a lovely, equally stunning girlfriend. Envy

This is my one claim to associated fame.

and yes tudors - historical hollyoaks. but still acceptable for the eye candy!

biryani · 01/02/2011 18:13

The only vaguely sympathetic character in this was Jeremy Northam playing Thomas More. Anne Boleyn was supposed to have been sallow and plain, Catherine of Aragon fat, Jane Seymour insipid, Anne of Cleves big and smelly (although this was Henry's way, allegedly, of covering his impotence with her). Henry was apparently obese and stinking of his ulcerated leg by the time he married Katherine Howard. The programme is so obviously inaccurate that it is hard to enjoy, IMHO, unless you are after straightforward, uncomplicated enjoyment of the costumes and sets etc.

RMCW · 01/02/2011 18:35

oooohhh....Rufus sewell....been watching Zen and loving it.

persephone typical! Sad The Tudors = historical hollyoaks - thats a very apt description!

I am doing a PT OU history degree and I am particularly interested in the tudor dynasty. Its not historically accurate, of course, but I dont watch it for its historical accuracy, I watch it to oggle all the gorgeous men in it. I admit it!

Jeremy Northam is wonderful (as is Tom hollander) I thought his depiction of Thomas More was really moving.

RMCW · 01/02/2011 18:38

...but obviously if Hans is ever at a loose end and wants an affair with a slightly dumpy, short sighted SAHM then I'm his girl! Grin

Well if you can't beat 'em, join 'em:

Did anyone else find the vigorous knobbing Henry was giving Katherine in the last episode somewhat historically inaccurate?

From the sounds of it he nearly broke the bed and what with that gammy leg of his I am amazed that the rheumy old goat could manage more than a few seconds.
