Ladies, please tell me.......

How do you get your tights to stay up?

I'm getting too old for knee socks now and need to move on. I wear tights to work with hot pants over the top so they don't fall down.

I'd like to not have to do this. And I want to wear tights more often, especially now you can get funky woolly ones.

I see many women every day happily wearing tights. How do they do it?

I'm buying the right size, what am I doing wrong?

Thanks!

xxxxx

You're buying the wrong size probably, yes

i wear skin coloured tights every day to work, you have to buy them so they are slightly too small because they go so loose after a few minutes' use

i'm also not afraid to wear two pairs of underpants with tights if i've bought the wrong size though! Grin (one as normal, then tights over the top, then another pair of pants on top again)

another tip is that if you've bought them and they're too long, don't try and keep them up, just pull on the end of the toes and tuck it into your shoes. you run a risk of a toe popping out, but really, if your nails are that bad and your shoe so tight that happens you have bigger concerns. handy trick!

Buy the right size and buy tights with a high proportion of elastane.

Buy the right size, dont buy cheap, and wear another pair of knickers over them too, so long as you arent hoping to impress some bloke later as that sight would probably not float their boat Grin

TrillianAstra · 31/01/2011 12:14

I find that it's the too-small ones that don't stay up - because the leg isn't long enough.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 31/01/2011 12:16

I'd say you're buying the wrong size. I am gigantor so buy huge tights. I have no problem with them falling down.
I have had a very happy flashback to being at school where not wearing another pair of knickers on top of your tights was seen as very odd indeed.

BrainThrustMastery · 31/01/2011 12:17

I have no problems with the tights staying up, but they are always too long on me! Sometimes I tuck the top of the tights underneath my bra Blush

Can anyone help solve this problem?!

togarama · 31/01/2011 12:21

BainThrust: I used to have this problem too - buy a smaller size even if you don't really think of yourself as "small".

marantha · 31/01/2011 12:25

On a slightly different note, if tights are too long why not use it to your advantage and pull them over your head and rob the local corner shop? Smile

MoonGirl1981 · 31/01/2011 12:25

I'm buying Medium.

Am a size 12/14 sometimes 16 depending on shops.

Careful what kind of undies you are wearing. Are they shiny material, like satin, or a more slippy microfibre, or shapewear which is notorious for being smooth?

You need cotton or something rougher (not rough, but not shiny smooth)

Yep, the wrong undies will make them slip down for sure.

If not that, I'd say they are ill fitting in some way - either too big or too small. Or too medium. Haha, that's not much help

PaisleyLeaf · 31/01/2011 12:34

Oh I'm the opposite and go larger.

IAmTheCookieMonster · 31/01/2011 12:35

I wear a second of knickers over my tights to keep them up

throckenholt · 31/01/2011 12:40

why wear 2 pairs of knickers - why not just wear them over the tights ?

frgr · 31/01/2011 12:42

throckenholt, because i re-use my tights until they break! does everyone just throw them out? they tear too easily in the washer to re-use long term though...

kreecherlivesupstairs · 31/01/2011 12:43

But surely you'd wash them inbetween times fgr. Stinky gussets are not nice things.

LarkinSky · 31/01/2011 12:44

I always buy tights a size larger than I am (budget-wise we're talking M&S level), and I always wear a second pair of knickers over the top of the tights.

As an additional bonus this has the effect of holding my stomach in all day in a far more comfortable way than shapewear.

woollyideas · 31/01/2011 12:45

Yuk, Throck, you don't want nylon near your bits.

My experience is that if tights fall down they're too small (ie. hipsters)

Dartsonwednesdays · 31/01/2011 12:46

Forget tights, wear stockings.

Much better!

frgr · 31/01/2011 12:47

kreecherlivesupstairs, handwash yes, but never after every use (every 2nd pair normally) and never ever in a machine. the ones i wear are too delicate. but I'm still not convinced about just wearing tights against your bits though even if you lot wear tights that you can bung in a normal washload...

fishie · 31/01/2011 12:48

I have long legs and tights fall down if too short. width not so much a problem although sometimes I end up with top of tights under my bra in order to get enough length in teh leg. is cosy if unattractive.

falke merino are my favourites. v expensive but last well and holes can be mended.

BrainThrustMastery · 31/01/2011 12:49

togarama I am already using the smallest size of tights I can find Sad but they're at least a foot too long Confused. Sometimes I fold them over but if you're wearing a fitted dress it can sometimes look a bit bumpy!

jendifa · 31/01/2011 12:50

Buy expensive tights, with a high denier. I wear tights everyday and never have any problem.

CMOTdibbler · 31/01/2011 12:51

I had this problem till I bought properly sized tights (ie ones that are long and size 14, rather than large cos I need the length).

Otherwise, I buy control top tights and they don't shift

kreecherlivesupstairs · 31/01/2011 12:51

Brainthrust, are you a midget? My DD is 135cm tall and wears the smallest sized women's sized tights.
There is no way that I would want a load of nylon against my fanjo.
