to avoid a primary school that has a high proportion of traveller children

I live in a catchment area for several primaries so when we were thinking about schools for my DS we started be looking at Ofsted reports for the closest ones.

One of them got a 'good with some outstanding features' report but in the school make-up section it said it had a high number of traveller children in the school. It is near a well-known traveller site so this makes sense.

I have to confess this put me off and I didn't even go to see it. We have since made our selections elsewhere.

I still think about it though - AIBU to be put off? Would you have felt the same?

Oooh - wonder if it's the school my DC go to. You'd have made the wrong decision if it is...

Nancy66 · 30/01/2011 20:45

Def send your kids there - you might get a big, fat wedding invite.

here we go Biscuit

londonone · 30/01/2011 20:45

Traveller children quite often have very low attendance so in a roundabout way you child may benefit from small class sizes!

It's up to you which school you send your child to and for what reasons - so in that respect YANBU.

there is a big traveller family at the school my dd goes to. They are a lovely family with well-behaved, beautifully turned out children. Their mum is very nice too.
OP is probably a troll but just thought I'd mention it anyway.

Hey, thanks for sharing this. You finally gave me the excuse I needed to post my very first

At one of our local schools with a large traveller intake there is a special room for the traveller children to go at breaktimes so they don't have to mix with the other children. It might be, OP, that the traveller families are worried that their children might have to mix with your child, and be dreading it just as much as you are. Ever think of that?

Tabliope · 30/01/2011 20:49

My DS's first best friend was a traveller. He was lovely - polite, kind and friendly. As was his older sister and little brother. Unfortunately he left after a few terms and my DS was heart broken, wondering what had become of him. It was my only worry in the situation - that your DC will meet someone they like, become best friends and that best friend moves on.
