to avoid a primary school that has a high proportion of traveller children

I live in a catchment area for several primaries so when we were thinking about schools for my DS we started be looking at Ofsted reports for the closest ones.

One of them got a 'good with some outstanding features' report but in the school make-up section it said it had a high number of traveller children in the school. It is near a well-known traveller site so this makes sense.

I have to confess this put me off and I didn't even go to see it. We have since made our selections elsewhere.

I still think about it though - AIBU to be put off? Would you have felt the same?

I engage in banality because I simply dont believe the OP for a second appletrees.

rosie1979 · 30/01/2011 21:05

And Appletrees British & Irish Gypsies ARE recognised by British law as being from an ethnic group.

Appletrees · 30/01/2011 21:06

Well that's a bit separatist.

Appletrees · 30/01/2011 21:07

How manytravellers are gypsies?

Katiekitty · 30/01/2011 21:07

Oi, Appletrees

What about the Morris Dancers?

Stop picking on the Party Ring Posse

Articulate · 30/01/2011 21:09

Oh God, aren't you all so terribly PC.

There are many traveller's near us and they're a PITA, local non-traveller kids can't get into their catchment schools because the traveller kids take up places and then don't bother turning up for most of the year.

Roll your eyes if you like but it's true.

balloonballs · 30/01/2011 21:11

Oh Apple, I don't believe for one moment that by stating a preference for an iced ring anyone was trying to be separatist.

toddlerama · 30/01/2011 21:12

So in that case YABU, because you just missed out on really small class sizes.

Appletrees · 30/01/2011 21:12

Let's bring a few facts into this.

Let's talk about ethnic make-up, as there've been a couple of racism allegations. Let's talk about educational achievement among traveller children. Let's talk about the amount of time the average traveller child spends in one plac. Let's talk about the commitment of travelling parents to help out in schools.

~All of these would affect whether or not a large number of traveller children changes a primary school outcomes.

I dont think thats the point, the point is you said they are not an ethnic group.

They are.

Appletrees · 30/01/2011 21:13

Oh I'm not sure. Maybe it would be racist to even think about those things.

balloonballs · 30/01/2011 21:13

I mean I'm only saying that I'm not a fan you see, biscuits if I'm truly honest just don't do it for me.
Now a good morris dance on the other hand....

Appletrees · 30/01/2011 21:15

Yes, it's separatist, if they're made up of white British people who've decided to live on the road.

If that makes you a different ethnicity I'm a jam roll.

rosie1979 · 30/01/2011 21:16

And the school was good with outstanding features.

So maybe the traveller children dont have such bad attendance otherwise this surely would have been noted by OFSTED

YABU for posting this and stirring up prejudice, do what you want but dont post it

Katiekitty · 30/01/2011 21:17

Ooh I love a good jam roll.

The secret's in the jam.

Got to be good jam, or otherwise, I'm not interested

Appletrees · 30/01/2011 21:18

No, I'm really not Grin

White British is white British, even if you live in a caravan.

..no one knows what the outstanding features are. I don't trust OFSTED.

McHobbes · 30/01/2011 21:18

Yes you are being unreasonable.
And judgemental.
And very Daily Mail.
