DH does n't feel the cold. So we have the Spring duvet (8 tog) on the bed and never the whole thing.

The kitchen thermostat is 13 degrees and the woodburner get the sitting room up to 16 sometimes.

The children run around and don't seem to feel it. The cold makes me sluggish, irratable and depressed. If I'm running around tidying up it's ok but once I sit down at the lap top or to read a book I feel like my brain is grinding to a halt during the winter time.

DH is a DIY kind of person but tends to ignore all advice to fit extra radiators or get a proper plumber in to get the ones we've got work properly.

AIBU to want a warmer house.

I have the heating off completely in our bedroom and ds's. Having the heating on aggrivates his night time coughing/asthma ( I don't know why) I can't bear the heating on at night.

TheGashlycrumbTinies · 29/01/2011 18:28

That is really cold, IMHO, we keep the house around the 19-20*c mark. We still have a big fire burning sometimes if it's especially cold outside.

Also have 13 tog down duvets on all beds, plus hot water bottles.

I hate the cold :)

NeatSoda · 29/01/2011 18:29

Egad. 13 degrees.

No, no, no. YANBU

Brrrrrrrrrrr

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 29/01/2011 18:30

OMG I have just seen about your duvet. Ours is a 13.5 tog, plus the bedspread if it is really cold.

Can you have separate duvets?

cupcake001 · 29/01/2011 18:36

I couldnt have that! Ours genrally never goes under 24! Im not going to sit in my own place being freezing.

aPixie · 29/01/2011 18:56

Ouch! That is really cold. Our old house was never more than 13 degree's with the heating on full. I hated it. having to put an eight month old baby to bed with 20 layers on. Sad

Now though we've gone the other way. Our new place stays at 24-26 degree's with the heating off and that's in winter. Still, at least I can open the windows to cool the place down. A lot better than wearing 20 layers tring to keep warm.

Trying* Blush

NotWoozy · 29/01/2011 18:57

I would keep milk at that temperature...(joking)
that is brrrrrrrrrrrrr.

NorthernGobshite · 29/01/2011 19:02

18 is comfortable for us, 13 is bloody arctic!

BlackBag · 29/01/2011 19:02

OK I'm going to move in with anyone of you and shed my thermals.

We were skint for many years so used to a cold house but then we both worked elsewhere, commuted, went to the pub or the cinema. Now we have small children I'm at home all day, DH does work from home sometimes but his desk is by the stainless steel chimney, the warmest part of the house.
DH designed, bought and installed the system.
He remebers the woodburner salesman saying 'oh yes I had this system it was cold on groundfloor, perfect on the middle and too hot in the bedroom. Well that was complete bollocks but DH does remind me every year.

The cooker/boiler salesman went through rough calcs saying how many rads we'd need on the ground floor but DH does n't remember that so we only have background underfloor heating installed despite the fact the boiler is in theroy capable of heating up to 12 bedroom rads. So we have a lovely low temp house, lots of hardwork, great for DH's internal furnace but not my, as he puts it, delicate/do some exercise/unreasonabley demanding body.

I'm gonna run away with the first heating engineer I can hit over the head with a monkey wrench.

OMG I hate a hot house, my parent's house feels like a tropical greenhouse to me, but I still have mine set on 16. It's an old house with v high ceilings and I know some of my friends and my parents find it too cold. I can't bear being too hot at night though.

clevercloggs · 29/01/2011 19:19

I have the thermostat about 13 and its fine

if i am cold i put a cardigan on or sommat but i cant stand being stuffy

I know when it gets too warm as the dogs start panting

BreconBeBuggered · 29/01/2011 19:23

OP, that sounds frrreezing! The temperature in my house rarely goes below 17, even with the heating off during the daytime. Get yourself a hot water bottle to have at your back while you sit shivering on the sofa. It'll warm you up no end, especially if you're wrapped in a fleece.

PfftTheMagicDragon · 29/01/2011 19:34

Alibaba - no, probably not. But as he is at work all day, that wouldn't matte to him Hmm

No matter though, as I only get up and turn it up Grin

L0ST · 29/01/2011 22:46

imo 13 deg if fecking freezing in a house!!
19-20 is more like it.....

moaningminniewhingesagain · 29/01/2011 22:52

BRRRRrr that's freezing. Have my thermostat set to 19 which is perfectly comfortable, maybe 15 overnight as you can tolerate it better when asleepSmile

But 13 deg is bordering on cruel!

gaelicsheep · 29/01/2011 22:54

At 13 degrees you are getting down to temperatures where long term exposure becomes a risk to health. You're right it does make you sluggish, because you're using up so much energy just staying warm.

I spent many years living in a house that cost a farking fortune to heat and still only achieved 14 degrees in the living room. It was a nightmare so I really feel for you OP. We've now got better insulation and an extra storage heater and we are enjoying temperatures of 17 to 18 degrees - it's sooo much better. Your DH is being reckless with your family's health.

shakey1500 · 29/01/2011 22:55

YANBU- I also feel the cold whilst dh swears he's roasting.I'm normally layered to the hilt and have been know to go to bed wearing thermal pj's, woolly socks AND my fleece dressing gown (romantic eh?).

Central heating dh has on a timer, radiators on a low setting. That is, until he leaves home to work away for 4 days at a time, every week. The nanosecond he is out that door the heating goes on full blast full time.

He did succumb during "the big freeze of 2010" though.

KangarooCaught · 29/01/2011 22:57

Our thermostat is at 19.5/20.O in the day and off at night, but very warm duvets.

You need CosyCool to solve all your problems and restore marital harmony Grin

gaelicsheep · 29/01/2011 23:00

Tell your DH that exposure to such temperatures long term makes you more susceptible to respiratory tract infections. Plus your blood is quicker to clot and you become more vulnerable to heart attacks and strokes.

Zukiecat, that is plain ridiculous. Why on earth is it that cold in your bedroom? We have no central heating and we get outside temperatures down to minus 18. We live in a solid granite house. Our bedroom is never ever that cold, nothing like it.

Soups · 29/01/2011 23:06

That does sound cold. Go and buy yourself a small heater.

onceamai · 29/01/2011 23:07

YANBU. Our thermostat is usually set at about 17-18 and that's more than warm enough. It's timed though - 5.30 - 7.45 mornings and 4 - 10.30 evenings. When I was a SAHM I tended not to have it on during the day because I was always dashing around. We are quite warm blooded and I have to turn it down if we light an open fire and certainly can't sleep with it on through the night. Although it ticked over very low when the DC were babies.

SoMuchToBits · 29/01/2011 23:12

That seems really cold to me - but I feel the cold terribly. I always have our heating set to 20 degrees or above (although it goes off at night). Basically 13 degrees I would be wearing a coat.Even 16 degrees I don't think is hot. I would only take my cardigan off if it was 22 degrees or above.

I think warm/hot starts at 23 degrees and above. Again, it's not so bad if you are rushing around doing stuff, but if I'm sat down I need to e about 22 dgrees or above, otherwise my feet start to get cold then the rest of me follows. Although I think part of the problem is my core temp is set wrong. My normal temperature is about 37.2 (most people would think I was ill at that temp, but that is my normal temp). This means I usually think it's cold when other people are comfortable....
