Defending greggs!

notremotelyintofootie · 29/01/2011 14:52

Their sausage rolls in particular!

I know they are seen as being up there with fruit shoots etc but today I will defend them to the death!

Dd is 14 months and has had a cold for a few days but woke today with a temperature of 38.4, it has gone up to 39.6 and back to 38 but dd doesn't want to play, or really eat, she has had bf and some very diluted squash but generally not interested.... Until ds (11) came back with a ring doughnut for her and some greggs sausage rolls! She basically ignored the cake but gobbled up the sausage rolls!

Yay! All hail greggs sausage rolls!

She is now on me asleep thanks to food and ibuprofen...

Everyone knows that Greggs sausage rolls are a magc cure for colds, flu and hangovers.

My dd1 once told me "I like it when you wake up smelling like wine, because we get to go to Greggs" Blush

bitofcheese · 29/01/2011 15:19

LC200 · 29/01/2011 15:22

PMSL at the smelling of wine comment, that is brilliant!

Virgowoo · 29/01/2011 15:28

Not so keen on sausage rolls but I would mow down innocent shoppers to get to a steak bake if the mood took me. God bless Greggs and all who sail in her!
Grin

gordyslovesheep · 29/01/2011 15:30

they don't beat Sayers Veggie sausage rolls - no no no and no one makes an iced ring doughnut quiet like them either Grin

ivykaty44 · 29/01/2011 15:30

why defend them, if you want to eat one of there products thats fine Grin

gapbear · 29/01/2011 15:30

Mmmmm, Gregs sausage rolls. They're like a warm cuddle when the world and his wife are tiddling on you.

kaj32 · 29/01/2011 15:37

But since they went national they aren't as nice.

And why can't i get their stotties and mince pies in Yorkshire?

ivykaty44 · 29/01/2011 15:43

the price varies in different towns the products cost different prices.

abgirl · 29/01/2011 16:00

I know at least 3 greggs which have been closed (at least temporarily) for hygiene reasons, 2 of them involved cockroaches - yeeucch! Now prefer to support local independent bakers who (while being slightly more expensive) are incredibly clean and tidy each time I go in.

notremotelyintofootie · 29/01/2011 16:01

They have only just been accepted in Oxford!

I love their London cheesecakes but they don't have them that often....

YOM YOM , i love greggs - 3 for £1 in our local atm and i can tackle 3 any day. Steak bakes are delish also i agree. I am a northy and they are my heritage so im allowed too.

ivykaty44 · 29/01/2011 16:14

what is yomyom?

MsSparkle · 29/01/2011 16:20

abgirl It is wonderful that you still support your independent bakers as they are a dying trade.

I find it incredibly sad when dh and I travel around and more often then not don't find an independent bakers in various towns. Instead you just fine several greggs shops which is so depressing.

I like a variety when I go places. If each town had a bakers you could try different things everywhere you go. Instead you just have greggs, who's produce is very average and some is just vile, taking over and closing down independent shops with their cheap prices.

No good can ever come from having a clone bakers in every damn town in the country. I want a variety!

Truffkin · 29/01/2011 16:23

I do have to agree with the sausage rolls being good, my DH loves them as a 'treat'. We do have an independent bakery (and butcher, green grocer, fishmonger, florist... lucky!) so thankfully for us Greggs is not the symbol of evil it seems to be in some towns Grin

Crystaldolphin · 29/01/2011 16:23

They don't sell ham and cheese slices in London Greggs. WHY? Angry. I go up to the Midlands to see family and there they are but not here. Any thought on why this might be anyone?

Newgolddream · 29/01/2011 16:24

My local bakers has just won some award for making the best Scotch pies, I dont find them more expensive than Greggs at all, we are too small a town for a Gregss.

StarlightPrincess · 29/01/2011 16:25

Seriously don't get the Greggs hate, I love them! I don't want to go to an independent bakery and pay £4 for a sausage roll, sorry!

nomoreheels · 29/01/2011 16:25

A friend introduced me to the sausage & bean melt. I was a bit dubious but ended up loving it. I don't have it very often though, as it must constitute 50% of my daily calories...

I think their ring doughnuts are some of the nicest I've found in the UK (I'm from Canada so quite stingy with doughnut praise!) and are so much cheaper than Krispy Kreme.

StarlightPrincess · 29/01/2011 16:25

Maybe a slight exaggeration on £4, but you get what I mean!

Crystaldolphin · 29/01/2011 16:26

Oh and my dc love the Tottenham cakes (plain sponge with tooth achingly sweet pink icing on). But they are nearly always sold out by lunchtime, make more of them Greggs!

Normantebbit · 29/01/2011 16:29

You are never far from a Greggs in Glasgow. Everyone goes there. Even my old boss who was paid ££££ used to walk through 'the office with his greggs paper bag every lunchtime. There are literally queues down 'the street at our nearest one.
