to not confirm my details when it is a company that phone me, not the other way around?

A while ago a catologue that I have been with for years started doing this. They would phone me and ask me to confirm my details to them. I refused saying that they had phoned me and I had no way of knowing who they were. They weren't overly happy and said they could confirm it and they couldn't offer me the service they were phoning for if I wouldn't confirm my details to them. I still refused and after a few calls like this, they gave up.

Today someone phoned. He had a very very strong accent and I really struggled to understand him but he was asking something about a Sky dish and then I heard the name of the people who owned this house 3 years ago (that we still get sodding phone calls for). I told him I wasn't Mrs XXXXX and I already had Sky. He said something about not trying to sell me anything but wouldn't tell me what he was phoning for then wanted me to confirm my details to him. I refused and he was obviously annoyed about it. I heard the name of the previous owners a couple more times and all I would say was that I wasn't them and they hadn't lived here for 3 years. He kept asking me to confirm my details and telling me that he wasn't selling anything but he wouldn't tell me what he was phoning for. He was getting quite shirty as I wouldn't tell him who I was. I ended up firmly stating, yet again, that I wouldn't confirm who I was and I put the phone down as he just wouldn't listen and take no for an answer.

AIBU to not want to tell any old person on the end of the phone who I am and anything else they may ask? Is this becoming standard with companies now? They phone you and then want you to tell them who you are?

I got a phone call a few weeks back where they said they were from Santander and asked me to confirm a few details. I said NO because I don't know you are who you say you are. She said it was about my account. I said I don't have a bank account with Santander. She asked if my mortgage is with Santander and she said if I could confirm some details, she would tell me that I was entitled to a refund on a policy. I said she would have to put it in writing. She asked me to confirm my address. I said if you're from Santander calling me about a mortgage policy then YOU KNOW WHERE I LIVE! YOU LENT ME THE FLAMING MONEY TO BUY THE HOUSE!!!

I never did get a letter telling me of my refund..........

HecateQueenOfWitches · 28/01/2011 20:48

When they ring me and say they need to take me through security, I say "You called me. I should be taking you through security."

And I tell them there is no way I am giving out my personal information to anyone who phones me, no matter who they say they are.

It's amazing how cross they get.

You'd think they'd be pleased I'm so security conscious Grin

CrapBag · 28/01/2011 20:51

I have noticed that they get really cross too!

"They then called me a schmuck. I know much better swear words. They hung up"

Grin that really made me laugh, redpanda.

ThisIsANiceCage · 28/01/2011 20:52

DON'T GIVE DETAILS TO CALLERS!

DP's elderly DF had a "nice man from the bank" call and spend a good 20 mins discussing essential admin and changes to our service, and reading him out the first four digits of his credit card as proof he really was the bank, and then asked him for his full debit/credit card no and security no.

Thank god he called his bank back about something trivial. It was all a scam and they'd already taken some money. (First four digits of credit card no always the same for a given bank, of course.)

KalokiMallow · 28/01/2011 20:54

I did have someone once call and ask to confirm my name etc.

So I asked him to confirm his name, date of birth and home address. He wouldn't for some reason.. Grin

CrapBag · 28/01/2011 21:04

Kaloki thats what I said to DH I am going to do next time.

Can't see them answering me somehow. Grin

Caller and Mail Preference Service - we don't get any at all now. It lapsed once for 2 weeks and I got a call from someone trying to flog me a conservatory - I started laughing because our toilet is on the back of our house and I explained that we couldn't have a conservatory attached to our toilet Grin She persisted anyway and in the end I had to hang up.

CrispyTheCrisp · 28/01/2011 21:12

Someone called today which came up as 'out of area'. He said 'may I speak to the homeowner?'

I said 'no' and put the phone down Grin

NimpyWindowmash · 28/01/2011 21:17

YANBU
I get really pissed off with the people who phone up saying Hello Mrs xx, I'm phoning about your Microsoft Windows computer. I mean, why the fuck would I want to speak to anyone about my Microsoft Windows computer? Grrrr

footballsgalore · 28/01/2011 21:21

We are also registered with TPS (Telephone Preferential Services). Blocks all sales calls and if you do get one through you just tell them you're registered. They then run away very quickly as they can be prosecuted.
I also had the same call as catinthehat2. If they really are the bank/credit card then they get you to call them back via the number on the back of your card.

stressheaderic · 28/01/2011 21:22

I really let rip at some bellend who phoned me at home when I was trying to get newborn DD to sleep, I answered and he said, all cheery like: "Hi! Thanks for coming to the phone today! How are you?"
Wanker.

HelenBa · 28/01/2011 21:23

YANBU, Halifax does this after you go in for meetings with their branch staff. They call you to do a customer feedback blah di blah bullshit questionnaire thing.

I tried explaining to the woman why I wasn't comfortable giving her my security info but she was honestly just too thick to understand and kept saying, 'Yes, but I'm LISA from HALIFAX and I'm ringing about a CUSTOMER SERVICE QUESTIONNAIRE'.

God, sorry, if I'd realised it was LISA I'd've just handed over my passport right away...

The worst thing was, it was my mobile and I was at work. Eventually I just hung up.

WimpleOfTheBallet · 28/01/2011 21:30

I had a similar thing...I called sky and sky told me there were NO calls made to me by them that day! They investigated it apparently.

upahill · 28/01/2011 21:32

I have been getting a few calls lately (even though we are on the TPS)

The conversation goes something like this

'Can I speak to Mr Upahill plase?'

Me 'No, sorry'

Then there is an arkward silence.

them 'er is he in?'

me 'no'

them 'when will he be back?'

me ' Dunno'

Conversation sort of fades away round about now.

chopchopbusybusy · 28/01/2011 21:36

We are registered with the TPS and it has stopped the sales calls. We are also ex directory. I did have a call from lloyds bank asking me to confirm details of my account and she got shirty when I refused. When I next went to the bank I mentioned it and she said, yes, they were currently doing calls but didn't get why I was unwilling to confirm who I was when they called me.
I also got a call from nationwide who didn't ask me for any details. Just gave me a brief outline of why he was calling and invited me in to the branch. He got the business.

zipzap · 28/01/2011 22:06

hate it when you get these calls, always at the wrong time.

have only once had a genuine bank call from the fraud dept and they were really happy to tell me to call the number on the back of the credit card and that sooner rather than later would be better. turned out somebody was trying to use my card in the US but they'd stopped it.

sometimes will ask caller for their id - name, birthdate, home address etc and yes, they don't like that.

ones that have been really bugging me recently are people that ring up saying they are 'ringing on behalf of BT'. When you ask them if they actually work for BT themselves and BT pay their wages they just repeat 'we are ringing on behalf of BT' and get upset about you having the audacity to question them. depending on mood/need for phone, either say I'll go and get dh and leave the phone off the hook for a while or put the phone down.

MadAsASnakeNana · 28/01/2011 22:10

Don't even get into a conversation with these people - just hang up as soon as they start. We get pestered constantly with these.

DayShiftDoris · 28/01/2011 22:11

So glad it's not just me!!

I always refuse but I do offer to call them back

And NOT ONE OF THEM as EVER had the facility for me to call them back [hmmm]

HollyBollyBooBoo · 28/01/2011 22:13

YANBU

You called me - how do I know who you are? You identify yourselves!!
