we are underpaid skivvies....trying to please everybody and not even time to go to the loo on most days...

Am utterly fed up of this. Parents and kids thinking that if their child is not getting a A or A* (I work at a state selective school) - what am I going to do about it??How about the kids being a little proactive and stop whinging and DO SOME WORK!!!!!!

I disagree. I'm a teacher and I don't feel underpaid. Parents can be a pain but a nod and smile works wonders.
Have a glass of wine - it's Friday! :o

Stillenacht - you need some wine love - tis Friday and the end of a stressful week for you.

(from a Mum who thoroughly appreciates teachers).

And some parents are utterly unreasonable - I know cos I have to listen to em at the school gate.

Colleague had a parent say, on hearing their child was working at B grade, "B grade is for plumbers. What are you going to do about it?" Grin

But with the warm haze that is mat leave, I can say all our parents and students are lovely.

manicbmc · 28/01/2011 17:56

Yep - it's wine o'clock! I thoroughly appreciate a good teacher. They work damn hard. Except my dd's Chemistry teacher, who is a lazy arse that thinks getting a class of top set kids to copy out of a textbook is teaching Hmm .

But then I don't expect any As or A*s unless dd puts some work in.

Lucycat · 28/01/2011 17:56

Truth is that B grade plumber child will probably earn more and be in more regular employment than many an Arts graduate.

I think gin is in order Smile

manicbmc · 28/01/2011 17:57

I have bacardi, will that do?

celticlassie · 28/01/2011 18:01

Completely agree about the skivvie bit but quite like the pay! Am fed up of parents asking why their children do not get more homework when the fact is that half the kids don't do it anyway and it takes half of their teaching time chasing it up... Angry

Time for a wine I think ...

maighdlin · 28/01/2011 18:08

YANBU, not a teacher but know one who teaches at a v v posh primary, he gets it all the time. education is equally teaching and being taught and the effort made by the student at home.

have a wine and try not think about it.

trixie123 · 28/01/2011 18:10

yep, DP had a parent tell him that if their son didn't get into Oxbridge they'd be holding him responsible, despite DP running extra sessions to which this kid didn't go and giving him all sorts of specialised support and preparation including mock interviews. They didn't think that the kid naffing off on a sports trip and not revising in the weeks before Jan modules ought to be an issue either. Hmm, a nice Rioja I think...

manicbmc · 28/01/2011 18:12

I'm not a teacher, I'm a TA. But don't you just long for the days when you were allowed to tell parents their kids were lazy little buggers and not have to sugar coat everything? Grin

onceamai · 28/01/2011 18:17

Stillenacht. I'm not a teacher but I still feel like a skivvy at work. Probably earn the same as a senior secondary school teacher - work about 50 hours a week but do it for 46 weeks a year rather than 40. Am responsible for approximately 15 adults and believe me getting adults to comply can be far more frustrating than getting children/teenagers to comply - they should know better but can still be insolent and arsy and yesterday I had a 57 year old man in my arms in tears. And NEVER have the flexibility to get the DC to an appointment at 5ish either. Slopes off to pour second glass - home early because it's Friday Grin
