What is a choke chain?

S&M?

Sorry for ignorance ..... sheltered life ....

waitwhat · 27/01/2011 15:34

on dogs or people?

On dogs absolutely not, its just a step up from an electric collarAngry

Not sure about on people My husband tends to walk really fast so i have to trot to keep up..He could do with oneGrin

Spanky100 · 27/01/2011 15:34

Its a type of dog collar.
A chain that tightens when the dog pulls.

they are cruel.

If your dog needs more control, then use a halti or a full harness. and take them to training.

Ooopsadaisy · 27/01/2011 15:39

Oh my life! Sorry - I thought it was either S&M stuff or chavvy jewellery of some sort.

Am not a perv or a chav and also don't have a dog so I'm on the wrong post entirey!

Thanks for clearing that up.

Anyone inflicting cruelty on animals should indeed be in the gallows.

Spanky100 · 27/01/2011 15:41

LOL
I have seen dog chain type things in ann summers before but thats a post for another day Wink

I have a slip lead on my dog. It isnt metal, but it does tighten if he pulls too much.

That is the type of lead that most trainers will recommend.

Harnesses often do more damage to the chest, as well as restrict the movement of the dogs front legs.

Halti's are ok with some dogs, but many panic. (would you like to be yanked by your nose to turn a corner?)

Ooopsadaisy · 27/01/2011 15:44

So if a dog is going mental could it actually asphixiate itself?

Are they legal?

bubblewrapped · 27/01/2011 15:47

Of course they are legal. You would be on the other end of it walking your dog, so the dog is not likely to choke itself.

Spanky100 · 27/01/2011 15:47

They shouldn't be legal....

I see what your saying bubblewrapped but there's a heck of a lot of evidence for choke chains causing extensive damage. Particularly to the windpipe and spine.

The slip leads, those are rope?
And i think you can set them as well so they only tighten to a certain point?
I'm not as viciously against those.

Also, a lot of dogs have been killed after owners put the chain the wrong way and it tightened but didn't release.

(would you like to be yanked by your nose to turn a corner?)

would you like to be choked and dragged backwards?

Both are bad

They are legal. And cruel imo, especially if they are used as training aid i.e the owner yanks the chain/lead hard thereby choking the dog deliberatly as a correction for unwanted behaviour.

I hate using correction on my dog, but he will not work for treats. Water suffices, there is no need for me to cause him pain.

A trainer reccomended for me to use a 'half check' eg half choke chain half flat collar. I changed trainers.

TooImmature2BMum · 27/01/2011 15:50

Not sure about halters - my dog prances like a pony because he hates wearing it, and I do think that if he yanked at the wrong angle, he might hurt his neck. He hasn't needed to wear it since he tried to jump a gate and cracked a vertebrae, so he can't pull as much as he did Sad

I thought choke chains were illegal? Although I'm not sure what the answer is if your dog is too strong for you - call in the Dog Whisperer? I suspect that the answer is to train them not to pull, but sadly many people find this much harder than expected (me, for example. Luckily the dog was not strong enough to pull me over even in his most robust days).

bubblewrapped · 27/01/2011 15:51

I dislike metal choke chains, although not as much as I dislike chavvy leather harnessess with studs.. lol!

My dad always used metal choke chains on all our dogs, but having said that, none of them were pullers, and would walk at his heel even off the lead.

My dog doesnt so much pull, he just power walks, so when he is out with my husband who walks a lot quicker than me, he is at heel.. with me he gets gently pulled back if he is going too quickly.

Really there is nothing great for a dog who pulls, and that dog needs training, a lead on its own will not fix that.

The kennels we use does training courses, with the owners, and they were very effective. It is the owner who has to be trained as well as the dog!

Ooopsadaisy · 27/01/2011 15:52

Thanks bubble. I'm not a dog owner so I'm not familiar with this.

So it's a device to stop the dog running off/attacking something/someone etc by causing a restriction to the throat.

It does sound cruel, but so does whipping a horse, or harnessing a horse with a bit round it's mouth.

Isn't a normal lead enough? Again - apologies but I'm not a dog owner - just interested.

sowhatis · 27/01/2011 15:53

i have used choke chains on my dogs before.

I dont think they are cruel if used correctly. i think if the owner knows how and when to use it they can help.

have also used a halti.

now my dogs have a regular leather collar and a rope lead when out walking. neither pull, both v well behaved, but having the choke chain certainly helped me get the message across that pulling isnt nice for them or me.

Rainydaze · 27/01/2011 15:54

YANBU, they're awful.

A disgusting woman who lives near me has choke chains and electric collars on her two terriers (who she uses for terrierwork - yes, she really is scum!)

Choke chains should be banned.

Spanky100 · 27/01/2011 15:54

I think there are calls for them to be made illegal but it hasn't happened.

Depends on the dog i suppose.
We always used to change direction sharply when they pulled and that stopped them.
That method was recommended by some blue cross behaviourist in a book i read.

OP posts:
bubblewrapped · 27/01/2011 15:55

No Daisy, it is just a restraint to stop a dog from pulling. If they pull, it tightens round the neck, if they stop pulling, it loosens.

A muzzle is the only thing that stops a dog from being able to bite. Oh, and a trainer.

Spanky100 · 27/01/2011 15:56

Electric collars?
Now I thought those were definately illegal?

OP posts:
cobbledtogether · 27/01/2011 15:56

My dog always had a metal choke chain, but never pulled. If a dog pulls when wearing a normal collar its going to choke itself anyway.

If a dog is properly trained not to pull, then it doesn't make much difference.

bubblewrapped · 27/01/2011 15:56

Rainydaze, why is the woman scum? just because you dont agree with what she is doing...

Spanky100 · 27/01/2011 15:57

I think terrierwork is pretty scummy personally.
