I went to the chemist today and put 4 pregnancy test in my basket, as they were on offer, along with a few other bits and pieces. I am ttc at the moment with little success and feeling a bit low about it. I went to pay and the woman at the checkout started making loud comments about how many tests I was buying and saying things like, "Well you'll know for sure with four" and "Taking more tests wont make it go away!" and laughing.

To be fair I know she was just trying to be friendly but this is a VERY small town and ttc is a private matter which I am not ready to tell everyone about yet!

I didn't dare look behind me in case I knew someone. Just gave a small laugh, paid and ran!

Why didn't you buy them out of town or online if it's that private?

Because I didn't expect a running commentary on my purchases and because I didn't want to wait for them to be delivered and as we are using my PIL as our postal address I didn't fancy them being delivered there.

i am with you OP. finding out the result of a PG test can be lifechanging and it isn't always a welcome change. i think she shoudl have been discreet and just scanned them without comment.

i don't know what it is about PG tests that makes shop assistants feel able to comment. i bet she wouldn't have commented if you had bought razors "ooh, giving the garden a trim are we dear?" or if you had bought a facial hair bleaching kit, "yeah, your moustache does need a bit of camouflage doesn't it?"
so why is it ok to comment on a pg test? and i dont agree that you should have to go out of town to buy one.

YANBU. There are many things on sale at chemists that people prefer to buy discreetly and without comment.

In fact, I don't think checkout assistants should comment on what customers are buying in any shop. There's just no need - why don't they talk about the weather instead?

I don't mind innocuous comments such as "those oranges are the best this year" or "that's a great CD, I bought it last month". But it's not their business to take much notice what someone is buying or have an opinion on it, particularly with "delicate" items.

It's not OK to comment on the purchases of pregnancy tests. Really bad manners IMO.

The person behind you in the queue would probably have seen what you were buying anyway.

As a ten your old boy i had some embarrasing comments made by the shop keeper.

the person behind her might have noticed, might not have really registered, cetainly would with the comments though. What about the rest of the queue.

Mind you, it can go too far the other way, too. In my pre-mooncup days, I remember buying sanitary pads in a small chemist's, and the woman behind the counter hissed, 'I'll just put these in a plain bag for you, dearie' and proceeded to wrap them in several layers of Unmarked Brown Paper.
