Hi. I'm quite new.

Notice a lot of negative comments regarding Fruit Shoots.

We don't have them here, and I don't read magazines or watch the news.

I'm utterly intrigued.

What's wrong with Fruit Shoots?

Thanks in advance!

Isn't it all about moderation? DS normally drinks milk, water and watered down juice, but when we're out and about, he sometimes has a fruitshoot.

So what?

I've never got this angst people have about what other people's kids eat and drink.

KatieScarlett2833 · 26/01/2011 21:10

Ladies, in all seriousness I never gave my DC's anything that was on the MN banned list. All food was scratch-cooked, frozen and eaten. I ensured that their Omegas 3,6,9, etc were all administered daily. They were no strangers to the 5 a day. And the result?

They are now 14 and 15 and live on pizza, coke, chocolate, chips, weetabix, crisps and hot chocolate, purchased using own funds. WILL NOT EAT good food.

Try getting one of my teens to eat healthily. And if it's OK I will watch and guffaw at your sadly wasted efforts.

PMPL Katie Grin So true, so true.

itsalarf · 26/01/2011 22:10

They are not that nice, but no more sugar than chocolate or sweets I'm sure. Often they are all that is available when you are out somewhere, so I will certainly lose no sleep over the odd one then, provided they drink milk and water at other times.

jade80 · 26/01/2011 22:24

Tattydevine I think the numbers are going wrong somewhere. According to this link there is far more sugar in a fruit shoot than you quoted.

I'm not telling you what to drink, just saying I wouldn't drink it therefore I won't give it to my kids.

jessiealbright · 26/01/2011 22:25

Same as longtalljosie

I tried one once years ago. Disgustingly sweet, in a nasty artificial way. I couldn't finish the bottle and I was very thirsty at the time!

So no way will I be offering them to the children. They'll have to obtain Fruit Shoots somewhere else and then come beg me for the disgusting ooze once they've discovered they like it.

jade80 · 26/01/2011 22:27

I think it's partly that calling them fruit shoots sounds so...wrong somehow! There's hardly much in them. I've spoken to loads of people who thought they were healthy until they found out otherwise- in one case, from their child's dentist.

At least Haribo aren't pretending to be wholesome!

BertieBotts · 26/01/2011 22:59

There are two versions of fruit shoots - the original (with 5 teaspoons of sugar) and sugar free (with hardly any, but contains other sweeteners, aspartame etc)

I'm not sure whether they're still producing the original sugar-containing versions or not, I rarely ever see them, not that I stop to check much TBH.

readywithwellies · 26/01/2011 23:25

Unless you are going to give your child water, all drinks have something unhealthy about them whether it be additives, sugar or lots of calories. My dds dentist has even said milk causes decay if you don't brush your teeth afterwards due to the lactose.
My dcs have them, if we are going out somewhere. They also drink milk, smoothies and squash.
I would rather my dcs have a fruit shoot than fizzy drinks any day

LaWeaselMys · 26/01/2011 23:44

I had some ribena cartoons left over from the wedding and gave one to DD yesterday, sipped a bit off the top to avoid squeeze and spill... My god, they're disgusting!!

I still gave it to her. It's not like it's a regular part of her daily diet. She just has water 99% of the time, because that's what I have and I don't think to give her anything else.

It was only Ribena left as well, fruit shoots all magically disappeared!

redpanda13 · 27/01/2011 00:05

DD is a weirdo. She likes water. She says fizzy drinks are too spicy? Confused. She very occassionaly will have a fruit shoot as it is the only thing in the vending machine at the sports centre Confused
I have tasted one and it is disgusting. Now a capri sun. Mmmmm I love a capri sun. A real one not that 100% real juice crap.

jade80 · 27/01/2011 00:21

readywithwellies, I don't understand why you would rather a fruit shoot than a fizzy drink? They are pretty much equivalent.

Maybe I just got used to it. As a kid I drank mainly water and milk, with fizzy stuff occasionally e.g. parties. I'm still the same, love smoothies occasionally now though. Mainly still drink water.

bronze · 27/01/2011 08:11

It's all about balance isn't it.

Who is bette off, the child who has squash at home but never any fruitshoots or the child who drinks water at home and a fruit shoot on the rare occasion when out.
Who know?
My children are the latter, my choice and I feel a relatively balanced one

readinginsteadnow · 27/01/2011 20:00

Forget the goodness/badness debate. All you need to think about is that fruit shoots taste shit. seriously, how many of you have drunk one? They are disgusting, and dont quench thirst either.

onceamai · 27/01/2011 21:42

Always been really relaxed here. Never had bans on fruit shoots, crisps, sweets, chocolate, hot chocolate and anything else that's generally nice if naughty. Unlike Katie Scarlett - the 16 and 12 year old really appreciate good food. Noodles, stir fry, salmon fillet on top, cottage pie, lots of veg, salad, roast chicken. And they still like a bit of what they fancy but don't go overboard - perhaps because it was never forbidden.

whoknowswhatthefutureholds · 27/01/2011 22:00

They taste of cack.

They contain aspartame that though may not have yet been proven to be bad for you, tastes like poison.

They love fruit juice/milk/water so why bother?

They can have em if they want to buy them.

A1980 · 27/01/2011 22:06

Additives aside, they taste like shit.

I can't understnad why people would choose to drink them instead of a carton of fruit juice.

NorthernGobshite · 27/01/2011 22:14

Full of chemicals. Nasty.

anarchyhouse · 21/12/2018 15:49

Thank you for the scientific reply. That's the best response IMO. Big up the science! I would give it a thumbs up boost but I don't think you can do that on MN. Xxx
