Hi. I'm quite new.

Notice a lot of negative comments regarding Fruit Shoots.

We don't have them here, and I don't read magazines or watch the news.

I'm utterly intrigued.

What's wrong with Fruit Shoots?

Thanks in advance!

aspartame dangers

into google. Some say it is fine, others say different.

aPixie · 26/01/2011 17:33

Apart from the fact they taste vile, nothing with Aspartame goes past my kids lips.

The Fruit Shoot "My 5's" aren't too bad though.

TattyDevine · 26/01/2011 17:48

"change your dietitician. Sounds like he doesn't know much about aspartame"

If it was an NHS dietician, he would go on evidence based information, the kind of thing you'd see on the Food Standards Agency or Department of Health or World Health Organisation website.

Not something you'd seen on a land-rights-for-gay-whales or "my health revolution" or "purify your inner light" website.

So by all means google aspartame, but like anything, do take it with a grain of salt and look for evidence based research to make your decision. Otherwise you wouldn't eat or drink anything, let alone breath, or get out of bed in the morning.

GrimmaTheNome · 26/01/2011 17:53

Have you ever thought what goes into those bottles to make them so brightly coloured though? Or even luminous at Halloween? (casts dark looks at dayglo bottles)

It does have to be said though - they are way better than Sunny Delight. Remember that? (shudders)

Oooh Sunny Delight - didn't they used to add Vegetable Oil to it for that much coveted smooth slippy texture?

KatieScarlett2833 · 26/01/2011 18:03

I miss Sunny D.....anyone have the recipie? I'm having to make do with Cremola Foam.....

TattyDevine · 26/01/2011 18:06

Ingredients: Water, High Fructose, Corn Syrup and 2% or Less of Each of the Following: Concentrated Juices (Orange, Tangerine, Apple, Lime, Grapefruit). Citric Acid, Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), Beta-Carotene, Thiamin Hydrochloride (Vitamin B1), Natural Flavors, Food Starch-Modified, Canola Oil, Cellulose Gum, Xanthan Gum, Sodium Hexametaphosphate, Sodium Benzoate To Protect Flavor, Yellow #5, Yellow #6

Christ. It was Canola oil.

See if you google "canola oil dangers" you'll see a whole load a crap. 3rd one down is snopes though, busting the myths.

KatieScarlett2833 · 26/01/2011 18:11

Yum!

claig · 26/01/2011 18:13

I've never heard of snopes. Is that some manufacturer's site?

Deciduousblonde · 26/01/2011 18:16

snopes is God Grin

BertieBotts · 26/01/2011 18:17

I used to love sunny delight. Was most upset when they discontinued it after someone went orange from drinking too much!

I hate fruit shoots though. They are so strong it's unreal. And I just really dislike the taste of aspartame, at least that's what I assume it is, as I find most things with "no added sugar" printed on them taste really synthetic and horrible. Pepsi Max for example. I don't understand how anyone can like it!

I did come across the fruit shoot my-5 drinks though which are quite nice, just taste like watered down normal fruit juice. However I bought DS a fruit shoot H2O drink today thinking it was the same thing and - bleugh - chemically crap, horrible. It's supposed to be fruit shoot diluted but it's still about as strong as oasis or other synthetic "fruity" drink.

bubblewrapped · 26/01/2011 18:17

I avoid anything with Aspartame in it.

It has been proven to have many side effects, and I dont give a toss what an NHS dietician says to be honest, because I have seen the proof of what Aspartame can do.

It has been cut out of our diets and the effects have gone.

blackeyedsusan · 26/01/2011 18:20

we use own brand ones as an emergency drink for the car.

dd is under the impression that she has them every day at school because I reuse the bottles! (with orange squash written on in large letters just in caase there are the healthy lunch police at school. this type of bottle is the one that leaks into the returning lunch box least, causing the least amount of ruined reading books.

MsKLo · 26/01/2011 18:27

Why oh why, when there are so Manu other drinks to give kids, do parents introduce their kids to this shit?!

TattyDevine · 26/01/2011 18:40

Snopes is a myth busting website. "the definitive Internet reference source for urban legends, folklore, myths, rumors, and misinformation"

Snopes

CluckyKate · 26/01/2011 18:42

Compare the Fruit Shoot ingredient listing to, say, Tropicana Kids: 75% Fruit Juice, 25% Water

I know what I'd rather feed my child...and it tastes good too Smile

TattyDevine · 26/01/2011 18:43

Me too Kate. That's our first choice for "mini sports drinks" type thing if the need or want arises.

Cappster · 26/01/2011 18:45

"change your dietician"

With the greatest of respect, love, fuck off. You've never even met the man.

What an insulting thing to say.

Tidey · 26/01/2011 18:47

I used to let DS have them but then I tried one. They taste absolutely disgusting, like someone said above, like undiluted squash. You can practically feel your teeth eroding as you drink. I don't buy them anymore.

LookToWindward · 26/01/2011 18:48

"aspartame dangers

into google"

Well fuck me. If Google brings up a website saying it is then it must be true....

LookToWindward · 26/01/2011 18:50

"It has been proven to have many side effects"

And these side effects would be?

And this "proof" would be?

Cappster · 26/01/2011 18:51

if my children, after drinking it, went beserk then fine

but children are all different

if it sends one child hyper that doesn't mean it's universal

GandTiceandaslice · 26/01/2011 18:51

They are vile. If my chils wants one occasionally, then they can. They don't though, weirdly.
The baby get water as he is unable to make decisions!
DS will only drink water.
DD will chose milk if we're eating out or if we're out & about she'll get water.

None of mine like fizzy drinks either.

Freaks.
