Hi. I'm quite new.

Notice a lot of negative comments regarding Fruit Shoots.

We don't have them here, and I don't read magazines or watch the news.

I'm utterly intrigued.

What's wrong with Fruit Shoots?

Thanks in advance!

I tried one once, before I had DD. I was thirsty, and my sister's children had left a half-full one behind (the purple one)

My experience went like this

Oh it's like Ribena - oh no it's a bit chemically - urgh! what the hell's that aftertaste?

So no, I'm not inflicting them on DD because I think they taste awful.

Cappster · 26/01/2011 18:53

GandT dd1 didn't like fizzy drinks till she was 10

then suddenly they were 'cool' Hmm

we have milk and water at home; but she drinks literally ml a day. A fruitshoot each week after swimming or a coke when in town on a Saturday is the most liquid she ever takes in.

claig · 26/01/2011 18:55

Cappster, carry on using it

undercovamutha · 26/01/2011 18:55

People need to chill out IMO.

Fine, not a good idea to give them to your DCs all the time. Mine have them now and again when we are eating out - better than coke I presume, although I must admit my 4yo has lemonade sometimes Shock Shock Shock so I am clearly irresponsible!

LunarRose · 26/01/2011 19:11

Mine only get them when there are no walls to bounce off of or all the kids are hyper anyway so no-one notices them going nuts Grin

jade80 · 26/01/2011 19:19

I wouldn't drink anything with aspartame myself, so I wouldn't give it to my kids either. Same goes for anything labelled 'sugar free' which invariably contains sugar substitutes- much worse for you than actual sugar. No thanks.

Fruit shoots are worse because of the squeezy bottle- as children have to suck, the drink covers their teeth more than if sipped from a cup or drunk through a straw.

Undercovermutha- no, actually they are worse than coke- unless it is diet coke, when they are pretty much equally evil lol.

Anyone want to guess how many sugar cubes in a fruit shoot?

readinginsteadnow · 26/01/2011 19:22

I'm sensible but not paranoid about what the kids eat. But fruit shoots are very expensive, very pointless when they could be having acual juice instead, and they taste vile vile vile.

readinginsteadnow · 26/01/2011 19:22

jade; 8? 9?

maxybrown · 26/01/2011 19:29

I'm not paranoid would much rather DS had coke tbh but my mine gripe is they are VILE. Aspartame is in an amazing amount of things too!

claig · 26/01/2011 19:33

Real coke doesn't contain aspartame, just sugar, unlike diet coke which does have aspartame

farming4 · 26/01/2011 19:44

Banned in our house cos ds1 has allergy induced asthma and they set him off big time. Same goes for anything reduced sugar or tooth kind - I'm afraid its full fat and full sugar all the way with us.

BlueCollie · 26/01/2011 19:54

Hypotheses of adverse health effects have focused on the three metabolites of aspartame, which are methanol, phenylalanine and aspartic acid. Aspartame is rapidly hydrolyzed in the small intestines. Even with ingestion of very high doses of aspartame (over 200 mg/kg), no aspartame is found in the blood due to the rapid breakdown.[4] These metabolites have been studied in a wide range of populations including infants, children, adolescents, and healthy adults. In healthy adults and children, even enormous doses of aspartame do not lead to plasma levels of metabolites that are a concern for safety. People with the genetic disorder phenylketonuria are advised to avoid aspartame as they have a decreased ability to metabolize phenylalanine. Common foods such as milk, meat, and fruits provide far greater amounts of these metabolites in a diet than aspartame.[49]

The methanol produced by the metabolism of aspartame is absorbed and quickly converted into formaldehyde and then completely converted to formic acid.[49] The methanol from aspartame is unlikely to be a safety concern for several reasons. The amount of methanol in aspartame is less than that found in fruit juices and citrus fruits, and there are other dietary sources for methanol such as fermented beverages. Therefore, the amount of methanol produced from aspartame is likely to be less than that from natural sources. With regards to formaldehyde, it is rapidly converted in the body, and the amounts of formaldehyde from the metabolism of aspartame is trivial when compared to the amounts produced routinely by the human body and from other foods and drugs.[4] Ingesting aspartame at the 90th percentile of intake would produce 25 times less methanol than would be considered toxic.[49]

Phenylalanine is one of the essential amino acids and is required for normal growth and maintenance of life. Concerns about the safety of phenylalanine from aspartame largely centers around hypothetical changes in neurotransmitter levels as well as ratios of neurotransmitters to each other in the blood and brain that could lead to neurological symptoms. Reviews of the literature have found no consistent findings to support such concerns,[49] and while high doses of aspartame consumption may have some biochemical effects, these effects are not seen in toxicity studies to suggest aspartame can adversely affect neuronal function.[4] Like methanol, the typical diet will lead to ingestion of significantly higher amounts of phenylalanine than would be expected from aspartame consumption.[49]

Aspartic acid (aspartate) is one of the most common amino acids in the typical diet but nevertheless has been implicated as a possible source for neurotoxic effects of aspartame. As with methanol and phenylalanine, intake of aspartic acid from aspartame is less than would be expected from other dietary sources. At the 90th percentile of intake, aspartame provides only between 1% and 2% of the daily intake of aspartic acid. There has been some speculation that aspartame, in conjunction with other amino acids like glutamate, may lead to excitotoxicity, inflicting damage on brain and nerve cells. However, clinical studies have shown no signs of neurotoxic effects,[4] and studies of metabolism suggests it is not possible to ingest enough aspartic acid and glutamate through food and drink to levels that would be expected to be toxic.[49]

Who knows lol

Fruit Shoot - 200ml - 1.6g sugar

"Anyone want to guess how many sugar cubes in a fruit shoot?"

Well, one cube of sugar is 1tsp which is 5g.

So about one fifth?

Hmm

Problem?

TattyDevine · 26/01/2011 20:21

"Undercovermutha- no, actually they are worse than coke- unless it is diet coke, when they are pretty much equally evil lol"

On what criteria are they worse?

It depends what is "bad" to you. Clearly you dont like artificial sweetners. Fine, but it doesn't make them "evil". It just means you dont like them. I dont like tomatoes. Tomatoes are not evil.

Why are they worse than Coke? Do they cause worse dental decay? No, they dont, they have the fruit acids but not the sugar, though the method of delivery (sucky bottle) is less than ideal. Do they contain phosphoric acid which is proven to leach calcium from bones? (No, they dont, whereas coke does, both diet and full). Do they contain caffiene? No, they dont. Is the serving size as big? No, its not.

You are making statements as fact with nothing to back it up. You are entitled to your personal opinion but it is not scientific fact and its as good as me saying oats are "evil" because they bring my son out in a rash and give him a tummy ache.

Booandpops · 26/01/2011 20:22

My dd reacts badly to any thing with aspartame ( sugar

Replacment). I'd rather give her real sugar ie lemonade ( not diet) or proper fruit juice if we are out than low cal/ sugar crap. Fruit shoots taste vile too.

Some kids are fine on it tho so I gets it's all down to the own Childs tolerance levels

Pumpster · 26/01/2011 20:25

Can't see what the fuss is about. Dd loves one to wash down her greggs sausage roll.

valiumredhead · 26/01/2011 20:27

According t WHICH magazine the orange fruit shoot contains 5 teaspoons of sugar................ FIVE???? Shock

TattyDevine · 26/01/2011 20:29

Well, according to Ocado, it does not.

valiumredhead · 26/01/2011 20:30

tattydevine - according to WHICH it does! Grin that;s the beauty of google!

TattyDevine · 26/01/2011 20:31

Thing is though, there are 9tsp sugar in a can of Coke.

Coke is not marketed at preschoolers or young children.

Believe it or not, neither are Robinsons Fruit Shoots. They are not marketed at young children.

If you have a problem with them, dont give them to your children. But what's the point in getting all outraged about how much sugar is in it or isn't in it?

TattyDevine · 26/01/2011 20:32

So what if it has 5 teaspoons of sugar?

Why not concentrate on how much sugar in 100g of Haribo, which is marketed at young children?

Monkeytoo · 26/01/2011 20:33

I wouldn't give drinks with aspartame either but there are some fruit shoots that are just juice and water and no other ingredients. I still don't use them, but just to confirm - they're not all bad...

TattyDevine · 26/01/2011 20:33

Or how much salt is in 2 slices of bread?

Or why not just feed your children what you are comfortable with in moderation according to their needs and allergies or lack thereof and not be bothered what anyone else does?

GwynAndBearIt · 26/01/2011 20:43

I agree with probably not a bad thing few and far between, - but now there is a real snobbery connected, - if the DC choose them I want to say in my stage voice "what about water?" - They've got you with their easy go anywhere sports cap - have you had a look at how many drinks there are available like that for when you're out shopping? - bastards, - all the easy no spill sports cap drinks, - they're all crap for your kids!

And they're all "no artificial colours or flavours", - i was fooled too before mn came and enlightened me! Grin

barteringlines · 26/01/2011 20:50

I give my dd the fruit shoot my 5s which are just fruit juice and water and very occasionally she will have a normal one if she's in McDonalds. I wouldn't want to give her them all the time but imo 99% of people who say that their precious, delicate little pfbs are hyperactive after one sip are talking bollocks.
