In thinking people should be paid to not have children?

I know I will get flamed for this but just thought I'd put the idea out there. Seeing as the world is unable to sustain population growth at the current rate, how about paying people to not have children? Reaching 50 you get say, £30,000. Think of the money saved on education, healthcare, green resources etc of children?

Sorry I just cannot be bothered to argue with you. But you appear to be saying that only rich people in first world countries should have the privaledge of having children.

Niceguy2 · 26/01/2011 09:21

But the problem is not so much in the UK & the developed world per se.

The problem is more in third world countries where contraception is frowned upon or simply unavailable.

What then? Who pays? Their governments are generally either piss poor and can't pay anything, let alone £30k or are so corrupt they don't care anyway.

pjmama · 26/01/2011 09:21

Do you really think that people who want a family will decide not to in favour of a chunk of cash when they're middle aged instead? All that would happen IMO is those who never planned to have any anyway would cash in and those who wanted them but couldn't would feel like they'd been slapped in the face.

Interesting in theory, but unworkable in practise I think.

Darn it! I've got to go out now so I'll miss the development of what is sure to be a very entertaining thread.

Ivie · 26/01/2011 09:23

Hammy I certainly wish your mother would have been paid not to have children

StartingAfresh · 26/01/2011 09:23

Is that for having no children (if so, it's an odd thing to post on a parenting forum) or for each child that you don't have, because if that is the case, I'll not have the 13 that I'm planning! Wink

If only you'd come up with this idea a while ago. I would have planned 18 or more and been able to collect a lot of money.
OP, you are a twat.

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 26/01/2011 09:29

How would you police it? How do you determine if a 50 year old man has or has not had children? I don't think there is a failsafe way of telling if a woman has either.

Who would pay? Would we need to raise a fund form all nation states to pay it or would it be the responsibility of nation states? What about ones who can't afford it/don't function?

How could people control their fertility in area where contraception is frowned on /illegal/too expensive?

Also, it's not the case that population growth is a problem everywhere. In much of the west ageing populations and falling birth rates are the problem. How do you decide who should be rewarded for remaining childless and who should be rewarded?

The most effective way of reducing population growth is economic development.

tabulahrasa · 26/01/2011 09:30

hang on, I've had two, but I was planning 8 more, that means I get...£240 000?

dessen · 26/01/2011 09:32

lol - compare to how much you get if you have kids - school, education, benefits if qualify, healthcare,

mamatomany · 26/01/2011 09:32

I think they are actually already implementing this scheme, it's called the rising cost of living.

noeyedear · 26/01/2011 09:32

People who don't have children apparently save about £100,000 (or something much higher than that probably if you count career progression etc)by not having children anyway- but it doesn't stop them. How's £30,000 going to do it? Maybe using that money to help people in developing countries use contraception and stopping the stranglehold of religion on some societies would help a bit more?

Hammy02 · 26/01/2011 09:41

I thought I might get this sort of reaction! Just that no-one seems to be doing anything to attempt to slow population growth. Apparently in the next 20 years, we will need to find 40% more food and water to sustain the population. Do you have any ideas?

Make contraception more easily and freely available.
Educate women
Educate men
Educate everyone properly.
So easy for me to think up theories from the warmth and comfort of my house, less simple for people who have no access to education, clean water, food, health care etc.

IntergalacticHussy · 26/01/2011 09:48

so you're saying that our kids are worth around... oooh £30,000? as a lump sum? hahahahaha

JeezyPeeps · 26/01/2011 09:50

I can see the following issues:

The UK has an aging population as it is. We need babies.

There will be a much higher rate of men leaving the scene at a rapid pace if they think they will 'get away with it' and be able to claim £30k when they pass go.

Abortion rates may well rise.

So: Lets pay junkies £30,000 at age 50 to have, say, 6 abortions in their lifetime. Nice!

JeezyPeeps · 26/01/2011 09:51

(6 isn't a made-up figure, I know someone that has had 6).

JeezyPeeps · 26/01/2011 09:51

(Thankfully not well, sister of a friend)

StartingAfresh · 26/01/2011 09:57

We have food and water in abundance. 40% increase if easy peasy if there is a will.

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 26/01/2011 09:59

50 - that's a little unfair isn't it on those people who live in countries where life expectancy is less than that??
