What is it about some people that they think if your house is not like a showhome (with the same beige taste) that you are somehow deficient and failing to do what they think everyone is trying to do?

Do you know what I mean? Some people I know are so rude and bitchy about other people's houses and i would never for a minute think about going into someone's house and criticising and joking about it, but a lot of people (who read house and garden etc) do. Why do they think they can get away with it??

What?

WoollyRuby · 24/01/2011 22:03

How are they not getting away with it?

GreenEyesandHam · 24/01/2011 22:03

Ok spill. Who criticised the state of your nets?

HecateQueenOfWitches · 24/01/2011 22:03

No idea.

Some people have a baffling level of interest in pointless things that don't affect them in any way.

I find a quizzical "Why do you care?" very effective.

You can even adapt it to the situation.

"Why do you care, did they make you pay for it?"

"Why do you care" always gets met with "I don't" to which the reply is "then why bitch about it?"

Which is probably why I have no friends Grin

fluffles · 24/01/2011 22:04

i don't spend any time with anybody who would go into somebody's house and bitch about the decor.
why would you spend time with people like that?

GrimmaTheNome · 24/01/2011 22:04

Fortunately - for me and them - I don't know anyone like that.

JamieLeeCurtis · 24/01/2011 22:04

Have you been watching "May The Best House Win" ?

pagwatch · 24/01/2011 22:06

I don't know anyone in the whole world who laughs at other peoples houses.

Where did this happen op?

Lavitabellissima · 24/01/2011 22:07

Have you been watching the new "come dine with me" type show on houses? I didn't see what it was called but they were brutal!

Disclaimer - i'm on maternity leave, breast feeding twins and couldn't turn over Grin

well you know the people who do their houses along the 'selling it soon' formula.. they seem to think that everyone is secretly aiming to make their house like that and doing it in another way is a failure rather than a success in the other direction .. if you see what i mean... ITs just I get sick of people who think that my house is 'quirky' and 'odd' when really its just not beige all over with new vases with twigs in and those annoying sticks that poke out of jars of smelly stuff.. nor does it have a faux art ikea picture on the wall, nor does the hallway have a 'cotton-fresh' plug in or whatever... you know the people who take their lifestlye hints right off the ad breaks and then actually do make money out of the housing market because so many other people believe that guff... its just annoying also how can some people be so anal as to follow themseleves round with a crumb tray, a dustbuster and a damp cloth so they can immediately get the place into showhome condition again.. its kind of not like being alive at all...

show homey or not, how often do you see a house interior you really like? I am amazed by how awful most look. I'd probably have to include my own too but I can continually blame that on the fact it's rented so some options are limited.

chandellina · 24/01/2011 22:10

oh no, am i the kind of person the OP is referring to?
i would never dream of telling anyone I didn't think much of their decor though, and wouldn't sit around and bitch about it either.
just saying.

JamieLeeCurtis · 24/01/2011 22:11

it's sad when people can't see past all that guff.

Personally, having watched that new show, the houses I like are the ones that the people who live in them love, no matter the style or whether it's full (literally) of collections of salt and pepper pots.

onceamai · 24/01/2011 22:11

Looks round kitchen and notes clutter on every worktop.

Heroine · 24/01/2011 22:14

well actually I ALWAYS like people's houses, genuinely.. apart from the freaky showhome ones where you have to sit on the front of the sofa like a fucking blue tit eating cake over the plate and constantly apologise for looking untidy. Mostly I wuite like people's differently shaped and differently organised houses.. I do wince at very tobacco-stained places (that I am sure all houses were like 25 years ago!) but apart from that differnce is cool, but its gettin so that everyone's house is a bit similar its weird.

The only thing I don't like is bad smells

Toastiewoastie · 24/01/2011 22:16

That's ok I only have friends who are slobs like me! And a couple who still live with mummy and daddy (in their 30s) and don't give a fig what the state of my home is. If they come over, it's to see me, not my digs. Sounds like the OP needs new aquaintances. Smile

bibbitybobbityhat · 24/01/2011 22:17

Mainly on property shows, Heroine. Its only tv. Don't worry.

Heroine · 24/01/2011 22:21
