To think that really boring people see highly creative people as children?

I AM JUST SAYING..

I had a weird thing happen, I am quite creative and like decorative stuff and cool quirky things and someone who I thought was on the same wavelength gave me a real dressing down when I showed her some cool japanese quirky notebooks I bought - with that sort of stylised fluffy, hearty, pop=art style, she sais the thought it was childish and unprofessional. (!). i thought it was just fun..

It made me think that all the people who make the rules about what is 'professional' are really just all the really dull tedious unimaginative types and that is why they think creativity is likely to diminish performance - because they can't handle it and it freaks their boring little heads out.

(I know this might seem to conflict with my 'women who run fluffy novelty businesses' thread, but I'm just saying (and not explaining well) that the dull people seem to never be interested in anything, and seem to make the rules, and the people who went wild and got into interestingb things in their teens and 20s but had to droip them because the dull run the world, are seen by the dull people as 'only having childish ideas'.
It seems a bit sad - does anyone see what I mean?? It seems to be getting worse as women have more serious jobs - I get it but as I'm a bit 'consultant-ish' I can ride above it, but it seems that somewhere there is a book that says you can't be clever or get things done or reliable unless you think and dress in a dull boring way.. and that makes no sense to me..

sorry for going on, but I think there somethin in my uncomfortableness at being thought of as childish when I think of myself as an adult who has some sense of humour and creativity.

Am I being unreasonable??

Mind you, I quite like people like the OP. They are good customers.

Litchick · 25/01/2011 12:59

Entire industries have been built up around parting would-be creatives from their money.

I would be lying if I said, some of that money does not find its way into my pockets.

TrillianAstra · 25/01/2011 13:34

I am definitely analytical rather than creative. That's fine, other people can create stuff and I can enjoy it, I don't need to make books/films/art myself, other people can make them and I can enjoy them.

If I were lacking in analytical skills I would find it much harder, or much more expensive, to run my life (banks and direct debits and remembering birthdays and not running out of milk and all that boring stuff). No-one does that for you.

Litchick · 25/01/2011 13:41

Trillian I'm not convinced those tasks are boring.

It's just that organisational skills seem beyond me. I try, really i do. I annoy myself and everyone around me by not being able to grasp them.

TrillianAstra · 25/01/2011 13:43

The OP would consider them dull, I'm sure.

I was agreeing with you Litchick, that it seems to be accepted by some that being bad at organisational stuff is endearing, whereas being uncreative means you are dull.

Litchick · 25/01/2011 13:49

Trust me, it doesn't endear me to anyone.

TrillianAstra · 25/01/2011 13:51

Why, what do you do? :o

StillSquiffy · 25/01/2011 13:55

"there are still a core of dull people who get freaked out by ... the clever people who are kept down.."

If all these 'clever' people are all kept down by 'dullards' then one might be tempted to assume that they are not in fact very clever in the first place....I must confess that this position holds marginally more sway with me than the counter-argument that it is instead a love of 'fluffy notebooks' and the like that is to blame.

marantha · 25/01/2011 13:57

Highly creative is like one of those signs you see on people's desks about not being mad to work here but it helps.
Look at me! I'm so unusual. Yeah, like you are.
I do agree, though, that truly creative people can find day-to-day domesticity hard to deal with.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 25/01/2011 14:01

I wouldn't have thought you were creative from your description, OP. You have a taste for what I'd call 'tat' but then each to their own. :)

Why do you consider people who don't accord with you, 'dull' or 'boring'? Perhaps it is actually you and your viewpoint that is dull and boring?

An adult would ask for an opinion but not mind if somebody doesn't agree. A child would do as you seem to be doing... acceptable in a child but cringeworthy in an adult.

Litchick · 25/01/2011 14:04

I get very...distracted I suppose.

I make lots of lists but I find it very hard to prioritise what needs doing first.
Dh could look and say, do x and Y and Z today.

I lose things too. And have crashed my car far too many times than is comfortable.

My Mother calls me a pathological imaginer, which is a polite way of saying that I am very very poor at anything practical.

I'm also dyslexic.

I'm a bit rubbish to be honest.

mollyroger · 25/01/2011 14:07

I'm creative AND practical.

I wrote my best poem for years the other day on the back of 3 bus tickets!

TrillianAstra · 25/01/2011 14:10

I am a creative
My notebooks they are pink
Others say it's childish
But that's just what they think

They are dull and boring
The suits they wear are grey
They have no inspiration
They don't know how to play

TrillianAstra · 25/01/2011 14:10

Look, I just wrote a crap poem, can I join the creative club? Wink

StillSquiffy · 25/01/2011 14:18

No. You are wearing stripey socks.

StillSquiffy · 25/01/2011 14:19

You are not wearing stripey socks, that should read, of course.

I am wearing stripey socks and therefore I am automatically a very creative person (I am also wearing Hello Kitty knickers but that's just my DH's creative side, not mine).

swanandduck · 25/01/2011 14:20

And a top shop skirt.

TrillianAstra · 25/01/2011 14:21

You're right, my socks are not stripey, I have failed.

BreastIntentions · 25/01/2011 14:22

Pop on some "fun" colourful tights dear, and a beret.

swanandduck · 25/01/2011 14:23

And cycle everywhere. Creative people don't do buses.

TrillianAstra · 25/01/2011 14:23

I do have colourful tights. But I'm wearing trousers right now so they would be wasted.

BreastIntentions · 25/01/2011 14:26

You are right swan but they do do baskets, and bells! Pop a baguette in there, slap on the red lipstick and voila!

Actually I did used to see Vivienne Westwood doing all of the above on a regular basis when we lived in the same area. She is well creative.

TrillianAstra · 25/01/2011 14:27

Wicker baskets are more creative than metal baskets. Especially if they have flowers on.

strawberrycake · 25/01/2011 14:27

I have a bright pink diary/ noteboook at work, A4 with a fluffy bobble attached.

But sorry I'm a dull deputy head teacher who got fed up of her (male) colleagues 'borrowing' her diary/ notebooks.

Ormirian · 25/01/2011 14:30

But a creative can drive a car as long as it's a vintage mini or a Citreon 2CV with flowers on it.
