to think that Churchill in the Kings Speech was ridiculous

I thought it was a good film until Churchill appeared. There were quite a few embarrassed sniggers when he came on. DH was delighted though - it was the highlight of the film for him :)

But, come on producers, wtf were you thinking????

YANBU.

Also as my DP pointed out, ALL the accents in the film were way too common with the single exception of the BBC announcer right at the beginning.

Esp Michael Gambon's....

I mean, have you ever seen one of the early Queen's speeches? She actually says things like 'Eh em your greycious sorv-rin'...

PaisleyLeaf · 23/01/2011 11:14

Oh no I haven't seen it yet. But I LOVE Timothy Spall, he's one of my favourites.
Like your DH, I was expecting him to be a highlight for me too.

StataLover · 23/01/2011 11:18

My DH only loved him because he didn't like the film (only went because of me) and this has given him now endless hours of taking the piss.

I'd never heard of him before but just googled him and seen that he's actually quite a successful actor! Basically, they totally overdid the Churchill bit - even when he was just chatting to the King, he sounded like someone trying to copy Churchill making a speech!!

LOL mutz

I was crying with laughter when we saw the ad after watching the film - too many similarities

Not looking good then. That's a shame, I like him the best of all the other actors in it. Maybe I'll wait for the DVD.

StataLover · 23/01/2011 11:37

I really enjoyed it. Churchill only has a minor role. Colin Firth and Helena Bonham Carter (and Derek Jacobi of course) were great.

RP's point about accents is right - they sounded modern posh rather than 30s posh but that didn't really detract from the film.

I thought it was a lovely film. Really enjoyed it, although we felt a bit out of sorts every other person there was over 60.
Yep, Churchhill was a bit dubious, but actually, I thought afterwards, at least if any really young people watch it, they will recognise the character!
