Look I'm not 90 years old but have a tone of thankyous for birthdays and xmas to do and why is stationery so expensive?
Forgive the sadness of the question.
Is there anywhere I can get it at less than 40p per card?
I do make my own as well but you need to have some put by.

(I don't respect myself for posting this I really don't)

they are too pricey. i often see them in charity shops though. Also buy packs of greetings cards that are blank inside from cheap book outlets that seem to be on every high street eg Publishers Outlet, Primark do them at least i'vebought them in past for same reason/ 99p shop and Poundland

The Works do buy one get one free on notelets. 12 per box so its 24 cards for £1.99.

Sales are a good time to look for notelets, because they get them in at Christmas and don't ever sell them all. I've got some nice cheap ones before.
Also discount bookshops often have them.
M and S also do little packs of notelets which are reasonably priced IIRC.

Costco and The Book People often do big packs of cards and this really reduces the cost.
Can you use writing paper instead? There is no law saying you can't write a letter instead of a card. We often send and receive thank you letters instead of cards.
It is good to see that many people do still bother too.

they sell them in the £1 shop - sets that is, not individual ones

also card factory do packs of 10/12 thank you cards for £1

Do you have an asda near you? They have blank, floral type cards for 27p each that I buy. They are mixed in with the other greeting cards so you have to look.

Also those cheap bookshops- The Works, Publishers Book Clearance etc usually have sets for £1.

The Works do 50 for £5.
