I like school uniform.

Choufleur · 19/01/2011 19:51

saves a lot of whining in the morning though about what to wear. I think it looks nice when all the kids are in uniform.

School uniform is a good idea, IMO. Mainly because it helps teachers to keep track of children on school trips, and it is (in our case), much much cheaper than wearing normal clothes.

Also, in area, like ours, where there is a real mixture of races, religions, and wealth, children are identified as part of a school community and not encouraged to compete in terms of fashion.

Toastiewoastie · 19/01/2011 19:55

I think it looks nice when kids are able to express themselves.

I think it looks awful when kids are forced to wear ugly uniforms which they just hate and end up looking scruffy in an attempt to stand out, or disguise the hideousness of it.

My DS has school uniform at Pre school and I love it.

For now it means I don't have to worry that his everyday clothes are getting ruined at School and when he gets older, it'll mean he doesn't have to worry about having the most expensive up-to-date style of clothes and will make chosing what to wear in the morning easy.

I always had uniform as a child and I loved it. I was never the coolest of school kids and having a uniform gave the cool kids one less thing to take the mickey out of me for.

jonicomelately · 19/01/2011 19:55

The kids in the photo look very middle-class to me. That's probably why they get good results.
Their clothes look really expensive. Lucky for them their parents are happy to pay for a variety of clothes rather than a uniform.
Personally I really like uniforms. It puts every kid on an equal footing Smile

JamieLeeCurtis · 19/01/2011 19:56

PS - my DCs uniform is from the waist up, so the children get to express their individuality fro the waist down

Toastiewoastie · 19/01/2011 19:57

I don't think it is cheaper, tbh. You can buy pretty cheap clothes from the same places where you buy cheap uniforms.

I agree joni

Toastiewoastie · 19/01/2011 19:58

Some of the kids where I work are middle class, some are poor (or doesn't rural poverty count?). They don't have problems with it.

think uniforms are great for lots of reasons stated above.. mainly if I'm honest the whole knowing what child is going to wear the entire week on a sunday night!

SarahStrattonsBaubles · 19/01/2011 20:02

I prefer my children to go to school to learn. They get plenty of time to express their individuality when they are out of school. Uniforms look smart and prevent the morning 'omg what am I going to wear' trauma and competitiveness. I'd love it if DD1's school went back to 6th Form uniform.

jenandberry · 19/01/2011 20:03

Why on earth would you be proud of working in a school simply because of its uniform policy?

By all means be proud if your school has great results or they offer great pastoral care but this is just odd.

Goingspare · 19/01/2011 20:03

Two of those children are wearing identical hoodies. In fact they're all dressed very similarly. They have brand names instead of school badges.

Blu · 19/01/2011 20:06

DS's primary school has no uniform, I am dreading the onset of polyester at secondary.

DS's school is a S London state school with a very mixed comunity, certainly not mostly middle class. It has brilliant discipline, very little bullying (and a quick response to any that crops up),excellent results, very happy school for kids, excellent ofsted.

No parents of girls that I know complain of clothes fussiness - probably because wearing their ordinary clothes is not a novelty. Mostly they wear jeans. The boys don't seem to give a damn what anyone else wears - some are all blinged up, some scruffy,no one comments.

I like the raggle taggle bunch of kids running into school each day.

Newgolddream · 19/01/2011 20:07

I have no problems with kids "expressing themselves" but generally this means the more well offkids wear more up to date/designer gear - and the less well off dont, which wouldnt be a problem...if only some kids werent inherently cruel and make other kids lives a total misery for not wearing the "right clothes". So Im in strongly in favour of uniform - they can "express" themselves after school.

manicbmc · 19/01/2011 20:08

I gather, from the article, that the children are given the option of wearing school sweatshirts and hoodies emblazoned with the school logo. It also goes on to say that many of them choose to wear these items outside of school.

Sidge · 19/01/2011 20:08

I have absolutely no problem with school uniform. IME most young people of secondary school age have their own 'uniform' anyway; certainly the sixth formers at a local college all look pretty identical to me given that they all wear a minor variation on a theme.

But then I've worn a uniform pretty much the whole of my working life. Certainly makes life so much easier in a morning!

usualsuspect · 19/01/2011 20:09

I hate school uniform ..The bloody logoed polo shirts and sweatshirts are a rip off

It does not put kids on an equal footing, especially at secondary age...I never wanted my kids to look smart either

and don't get me started on shirts and bloody ties

hoovercraft · 19/01/2011 20:09

I hate uniform. Id love ds to be able to wear his own clothes.

hoovercraft · 19/01/2011 20:10

By the way...our school forbids sweatshirts. too scruffy.Jumpers only.

threefeethighandrising · 19/01/2011 20:11

YANBU! The is (luckily) one of the few childrearing issues me and DP disagree about. Whether the school DS goes to has a uniform or not won't be a deciding factor for us - but I really, really hope it doesn't. I hate seeing children in uniform.

"I like the raggle taggle bunch of kids running into school each day." sounds great Smile

jonicomelately · 19/01/2011 20:12

Why doesn't it put them on an equal footing when they have to wear the same clothes?

threefeethighandrising · 19/01/2011 20:12

Oops I meant " This is"
