My friend is due to drop any day now and is adamant she will only the baby its milk either straight out the fridge or room temp. Am I the only one to (be very snobby) and think horrid! Poor little mewing newborn getting this cold rubbery thing shoved in its gob! Why cant she just warm it a little?

I cant help it, I think giving a baby cold milk because you 'dont want to spoil it' is lazy and shit!

I wouldn't give a baby milk fro mthe fridge, but mine always had it at room temperature.

thisisyesterday · 18/01/2011 14:23

well, the baby won't care because it won;t know any different

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 18/01/2011 14:23

dd1 loved fridge-cold milk.
she has a very discerning palate as a four year old, so i can only assume if she didn't like it, she wouldn't have drunk it.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 18/01/2011 14:23

YANBU to have your own opinion, however, my DD disliked warm milk to the point of spewing or refusing to drink it. My life was so much easier.

HelenLG · 18/01/2011 14:24

DS has had room temperature and fridge milk before...He doesn't seem to care. But then he wasn't a newborn when he had it.

TrillianAstra · 18/01/2011 14:24

Warm milk is horrible.

chaya5738 · 18/01/2011 14:24

My baby couldn't care less what temperature her milk is (unless it is boiling hot obviously).

I'd be more concerned about the fact that she has decided to bottle feed without even giving breastfeeding a chance, tbh.

And why do you care what temperature the milk is anyone if the baby is happy?

You sound very judgmental if you get worked up enough to call her lazy and what she is going to do is shit over such a small thing. Choose something a bit more important to get judgmental over!

winnybella · 18/01/2011 14:24

Apparently babies don't have preference for warm food as adults do.

So YABU.

StillSquiffy · 18/01/2011 14:25

Sticking bottles in microwaves to warm the milk could poison them with BPA, so Biscuit

LaurieFairyonthetreeEatsCake · 18/01/2011 14:25

yabu

room temperature milk is much easier and the baby won't know any different

BoattoBolivia · 18/01/2011 14:26

Baby doesn't know any different. I did stick ds milk in a jug of warm water to take the chill off if it had come straight from the fridge but now , at 9 months he has it cold and never objects. Personally I prefer my milk cold rather than warm, unless it. Is hot chocolate! Think there are more important things to worry about with a new baby.

NinkyNonker · 18/01/2011 14:26

Shame.

BornToFolk · 18/01/2011 14:26

DS mostly had his milk warm but when I used cartons, he had it at room temperature and never complained. Funnily enough, he will only drink cold milk now, he won't have it warm, not even as hot chocolate.

Anyway, she may well change her mind once her baby arrives. I had lots of ideas about how I was going to parent before I actually became one and I've been much softer than I planned...

WestYorkshirePudding · 18/01/2011 14:27

I'd say great!

If her baby is used to room temperature milk then it will save her a lot of faffing when out and about.

You don't have to drink it so what's your problem?

Deflatedballoonbelly · 18/01/2011 14:27

Who microwaves a bottle?

Yeah, like I said I was being snobby! She hasnt even had the baby yet so its not the babies preference. Its more the fact that she thinks warming a bottle will spoil it!

Funnily enough, none of mine would ever take one at room temp. Always had to be warm. Have I spoilt them? wink]

unhappyshopper · 18/01/2011 14:28

I dunno actually.. thinking about it now.

Imagine milk at room temperature and its a lot more difficult to swallow than cooler milk.

I wouldnt think freezing cold would be great for a newborn but cant see cool being a problem.

FindingStuffToChuckOut · 18/01/2011 14:28

well I BF so DD had warmish milk I guess - but when she went onto other milks (around 12 months) I never heated it, but she was a big baby then & she preferred it that way.

Does seem mean for a newborn. I know other Mum's who never heated formula for their babies but that was after 6 months of BF and they did room temp rather than straight from the fridge.

maybe the baby won't mind? But YANBU to say "giving a baby cold milk because you 'dont want to spoil it' is lazy and shit!" spoil it ??? - really Confused

(though I confess one of my main reasons for loving BF is I am essentially quite lazy)

I microwave a bottle. In France the advice on the packet of formula is to microwave it. Why would you not microwave a bottle?!

Species8472 · 18/01/2011 14:31

When DD (now 18m) started having some cows milk at 12m she loved it straight from the fridge and still does.

EricNorthmansMistress · 18/01/2011 14:35

The OP is not about whether or not some babies like milk from the fridge! (mine did) It's about her mate who thinks that warming formula for a newborn is spoiling him/her Confused

Breastmilk is not cold, it's body temperature. Surely formula milk, for a newborn, should be warmed to room temperature? Not to mention it shouldn't actually be refridgerated in the first place if you follow guidelines.

I stopped bothering to warm formula when DS was about 3 months as it was clear he was happy with it from fridge (yes I ignored guidelines) but for a newborn, I think feeding chilled milk is lazy and unkind.

OP YANBU

MoonUnitAlpha · 18/01/2011 14:35

I think it's a bit mean actually, I would at least make it body temp like breastmilk (which is actually quite warm!)

I microwave bottles but they are BPA free so presumably no poisoning?

aPixieInMyCaramelLatte · 18/01/2011 14:35

I wouldn't give a newborn milk straight from the fridge especially since the bottles have to be kept right at the back of the fridge where it is the coldest.

Room temperature is fine though.

berri · 18/01/2011 14:37

I always microwave DS's bottle he has before bed - are you not supposed to??? Shock

aPixieInMyCaramelLatte · 18/01/2011 14:37

Sorry, that's going by the guidelines when it was acceptable to pre-make bottles lol.
