I'm still smirking over the golden globes debacle. I don't think we've had a thread on this yet...and this should probably be on another part of the site but cba to look for it Grin

OP posts:

I think it's very difficult to really get to grips with the real RG, whilst he comes across as arrogant it certainly isn't reported by showbiz pals that he's a twat.

FranSanDisco · 18/01/2011 13:19

Humour is subjective and I think he's hillarious. I think he is funnier than he thinks he is actually.

Cappster · 18/01/2011 13:19

philmassive

"Didn't see the GG's but I do think Ricky Gervais is a one trick pony."

Philmassive I am so with you there. I cannot stand the man. I thought the idea was that David Brent was a character. Turns out its his entire act.

I've seen him make jokes about disabled people in a 'oh, we're so post-modern and ironic here, aren't we?' way.

And we're not. Half the audience just think hoorah, the 1970s are back, and we're listening to Jim Davidson mock people again.

I cannot see how he has managed to pull the wool over everyone's eyes so well. He's a horrible, overrated little man.

MargaretGraceBondfield · 18/01/2011 13:25

Cappster....I don't think you can blame the man for subversive humour being wasted on the thick.

Cappster · 18/01/2011 13:29

I disagree. I don't think his humour is anywhere near clever enough to be subversive.

cornslik · 18/01/2011 13:30
on you tube The only people I know who don't 'get' the office were just like one of the characters from it.
MargaretGraceBondfield · 18/01/2011 13:36

Cappster, one of his producers for The office was in a wheelchair, very very PC.

Cappster · 18/01/2011 13:43

I have no problem with The Office. I thought it was very good.

He's not come up with anything 'new', though. It's just various different versions of David Brent and slagging people off. It was the one-trick pony comment that struck a chord with me.

WanderingSheep · 18/01/2011 13:46

I like him.

slim22 · 18/01/2011 13:49

he did exactly what he was hired and paid for......what is all the drama about?
He makes me laugh.

unhappyshopper · 18/01/2011 13:49

I like him in some things but didnt find his "jokes" very funny on the GG.

An awards show is not the right place to take the piss out of peoples personal lives (Robert Downey Jnr, Bruce Willis)..

Fine if he was doing a stand up show of his own.. but not taking the piss as he is introducing the person, that is just bloody rude IMO.

MargaretGraceBondfield · 18/01/2011 13:58

Can anyone identify a comedian that isn't a one trick pony?

unhappy.....these people make MILLIONS from publicising their so called private lives.

unhappyshopper · 18/01/2011 14:02

I thought they made millions from their films and their acting talents.

What was Bruce Willis supposed to say in reply to the comment?

mrsruffallo · 18/01/2011 14:02

I had gone off him but I like him again after watching those clips...I think he was hilarious!

ILovedYou · 18/01/2011 14:03

YADNBU! - i also loved the intro i watched via the link here.

Thank you for that...Grin

Smileypeeple · 18/01/2011 14:09

Letthereberock he certainly wasn't cozying up to the Hollywood 'elite' last night.

I have heard him interviewed, I think he takes himself very seriously in as far as he's got some very core beliefs he wants to express (atheism being one) he's political, but I'm very sure he would find other people taking the piss out of him very funny.

Celebrity culture is one of things he likes to attack. The monologue at the end of extras was all about that.

I thought last night was a very deliberate irreverence towards the 'celebrities' to the extent he'd burn his bridges with Hollywood if necessary.

I think he may like himself a great deal, and have a huge sense of self importance about his own moral code, but I don't think he loves himself because he's famous or think he's beyond any piss taking. Unlike many there last night.

piratecat · 18/01/2011 14:12

i dunno, (non commitally!) i can never decide on him. Sometimes he seems genius, sometimes he seems like a arsehole.

MamaMary · 18/01/2011 14:18

I think the jokes were inappropriate at an awards ceremony. Far too personal.

However, I did find them funny. They would have been hilarious and appropriate if told privately.

I think Ricky Gervais loves himself. I don't like him as a person at all, but liked The Office and Extras...

VictoriousBeckham · 18/01/2011 14:24

I have lately found RG very unfunny plus his horrible giggle is very offputting.

But I laughed my arse off at the Golden Globes introduction - very funny

begonyabampot · 18/01/2011 14:25

That was rude and cringeworthy but I did laugh out loud quite a few times - the atmosphere must have been tense and awkward though and it seemed to bomb a bit. It was a bit too near the knuckle to be comfortable but he had a lot of balls to do it.

cornslik · 18/01/2011 14:26

I wanted to see more of the reactions from the 'stars.' Only Johnny Depp seemed to take it on the chin from the little I saw. Steve Caroll was such an arse!

NinkyNonker · 18/01/2011 14:28

Haven't seen it but god that man irritates me. He couldn't get any more pleased with himself.

Nancy66 · 18/01/2011 14:29

Steve Carell is his big mate - he was joking

propercrimbo · 18/01/2011 14:33

Absolutely hysterical!!

cornslik · 18/01/2011 14:47

is he really his mate?
