It should say on the box or the lengthly instruction manual...

I always dyed my hair when I was pregnant, but then for some reason I have it in my mind that it's peroxide you shouldn't use whilst pregnant, but normal dark colour hair dye is ok. I could be totally wrong though, so check for yourself.

It's absolutely fine for you to use hair dye. My hairdresser has told me that the only problem there may be is that hair changes during pregnancy and sometimes the colour might not take as well as you might like.

I have never had a problem though :)

It's fine! The only possible problem is that your skin is sometimes more sensitive during pregnancy so do a skin test first.

Ooopsadaisy · 18/01/2011 09:11

I've coloured my own hair since age 20 in various extreme shades. (Including some very ill-advised ones.)

Continued through both pregnancies, although leaning over the bath is not easy when heavily pg.

Now do it to cover greys caused by dcs!!!!

Check the box for advice or they usually have a customer care team you can ask - google the make and see what comes up.

I dyed my hair at 18 weeks pregnant and I look gorgeous now!! Lol

QuoththeRaven · 18/01/2011 09:14

ive dyed my hair through both my pregnancies, no harm done whatsoever, just do a skin test as usual before hand.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 18/01/2011 09:17

So did I, I either did it myself or went to the hairdresser. The only issue I had was the colour coming out a bit oddly once. The hairdresser told me that it was because the baby wasn't keen on the colour Hmm. The baby wasn't born and I suspect it was her skill at fault. She was the same one that told me not to let my DD look in a mirror.

TheEvilDead2 · 18/01/2011 09:19

I haven't done. I was worried about chemicals and my excema flairing up horribly because I have become really sensitive during pregnancy.

If you do decide to dye yoru hair make sure you do it in a really well ventilated room. I'd have probably puked if I had tried it form the smell!

Stangirl · 18/01/2011 09:27

I'm 14 weeks and dyed my hair at the weekend. In previous pg I went to hairdresser to have it done in foils but can't afford that now. All well here.

ssmile · 18/01/2011 09:27

Oh yes I had forgotton the smell that would prob make me hurl. My hair is very dark so the greys show up lots. Will have a good read of the instructions and do skin test this time even though have used it before lots no problems. Got a big family doo at weekend and feeling fat and yuck so it may cheer me up if dont hurl in the process :o.
Thanks for the comments.

the thing about dying your hair and pregnancy was from years ago when god knows what sort of dire chemicals were in it. most modern hair dyes are perfectly safe, but as other poster has said, you hair can act weird if pregnant. also do a patch test as your skin can go crazy too. i developed an aversion to sticking plasters when pregnant.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 18/01/2011 11:25

So it wasn't DD disliking the shadeWink. OP, the hair dye I use has something to do with bamboo formulation and only takes 10 minutes to be done. I think it's L'oreal and can't be sure where the bamboo comes in. The instructions are in Dutch.
It doesn't smell too bad and covers my very grey hair.

All hair dyes, even ones marked "semi permenant", and ones that darken rather than lighten your hair contain hydrogen peroxide. They like to emblazon "no ammonia" across the box, but read the small print, they have hydrogen peroxide in them. Its what opens up the cuticle and allows the pigment to penetrate the hair shaft.

The only ones that dont are your actual "wash in, wash out" ones that coat the hair shaft.

But there is no evidence that it is dangerous to use hydrogen peroxide in these quantities when you are pregnant, or any of the chemicals contained in these dyes.

I generally think you should go with official guidelines or evidence based research when pregnant, otherwise you wouldn't do anything.

I'd say go for it.
