To want an upstairs and a downstairs hoover?

MogTheForgetfulCat · 17/01/2011 19:57

I'm not going to, obviously - have better things to spend £200 on than an upstairs Dyson (I do like a Dyson...), like food shopping, bills and shoes for the growing DCs.

But AIBU to want an upstairs hoover, rather than having to lug ours upstairs? Have half convinced myself that if I had one, I would do more cleaning. Bus suspect this is untrue.

Can I point out, in my defence, that I am 37 weeks pregnant, and therefore experiencing slightly more difficulty getting the hoover upstairs than usual. Does that make me any less of a lazy cow ? Grin

I know you're 37 weeks ATM, so DP should definitely do the hoovering - if he's not around then you should ignore it or get any visitors who say "is there anything I can do to help?" to do it.

Once you are recovered you will probably start thinking about getting into shape and it is simply silly to spend good money (and space) on making housework easier if you're only going to then go to the gym/diet/Shred etc.

I'm glad I'm on a temporary namechange at the mo, because that's probably the most annoying post of all time isn't it Grin.

I have an upstairs and a downstairs dyson.

We got a second one when the first broke and Dyson were going ton take over a week to come out and fix it. There is no way i can last that long - i hoover three times a day!

After the old hoover was fixed, it became our upstairs one. We always use the upstairs one for the stairs.

kampakat · 17/01/2011 20:13

I barely have room to store my downstairs hoover let alone an upstairs one!!
But I do agree...lugging it upstairs is a right bore and I don't hoover the stairs often because it is too much of a faff and my hoover likes to push me down the stairs!
I have a cunning plan though...my mum and dad came to visit this weekend and turned up before I got home from work so they let themselves in and voila! By the time I got home the entire house including the stairs had been hoovered, the kitchen floor washed and dinner was in the oven!
I beleieve this is what is called a result Grin

goodmanners · 17/01/2011 20:14

i kept our old one for upstairs then it died. IMPORTANT INFORMATION - use the downstairs one for the stairs otherwise when you are tugging at the pipe to do stairs you pull the hoover down the stairs onto yourself and then half fall down the rest of the stairs as well .

starrychime · 17/01/2011 20:16

I don't have an upstairs Envy but if I did would be tempted to get an upstairs one after hearing my friend's tale of lugging hoover upstairs and having it slip out of her grip and tumble back down while tiny DD was faffing about at the bottom of the staircase - missed her but could have been nasty.

Essential. Don't know how I managed without. Have a Miele downstairs and a Sebo on the first floor (was my dad's and I inherited it). Have three floors and you work upwards. Must admit, also have an upright on the top floor (inherited that from my grandad). BTW the Miele is much more user friendly than the Sebo on which the bag is an awful fiddle to change!

HelenBa · 17/01/2011 20:17

get rid of evil carpets and use a broom Grin

MogTheForgetfulCat · 17/01/2011 20:19

Ahh, hadn't thought of using safety of DCs as an excuse for having an upstairs one - although did once persuade DH to get up in the night to see to DS1 on the grounds that 'I need to have enough sleep to keep him safe tomorrow' Blush, so do have form along those lines.

When we moved into our new house, the previous owners left behind a hoover (at our request) and we brought our own with us. Therefore, we had one for upstairs and downstairs. Twas wonderful
Upstairs one broke after 2 years - now have to lug stupid 9kg Vax up and down

CarGirl · 17/01/2011 20:23

Our hoover is now employed at night time as a barricade to keep the cats in the kitchen Grin I've got miele because it's ace and light!

iceandlemon · 17/01/2011 20:23

I think I have the opposite dilemma. We've got two Henries. One we had already, and one the students-next-door from last year left the other Henry outside with a 'please take' note on. Well, we couldn't leave him there could we? So now we have two vacuum cleaners. I'd love to say that I have an upstairs Henry and a downstairs Henry, but sadly we do not have room upstairs for even a pair of shoes, never mind a whacking great hoover with a mind of its own... The foundling Henry lives in our wendy house, until we can think of something or can be arsed to do with him.

charliesmommy · 17/01/2011 20:23

Makes life much easier..

There is a big cupboard in the DDs bathroom (top floor). They are filthy little scumbags not very tidy and leave their dirty linen all over their bedroom floors. I am seriously considering getting me a new washing machine and tumble dryer and putting the old ones upstairs. They can do their own laundry then and I will never have to go up to their lairs rooms.

I have dysons on each floor. I got second hand reconditioned ones for the 1st and 2nd floors.

Sidge · 17/01/2011 20:25

I have 2 vacs, an upstairs one and a downstairs one.

I started having 2 when I was pregnant with DD3 as I had awful SPD and couldn't carry the vac up and downstairs. Then found even when not pregnant it was so much easier.

I have a Miele cylinder downstairs and a cheapy Argos value upright vac upstairs.

OP, you sound like my Mum :)
(that is not a bad thing, btw.. )

they have a Dyson downstairs, a cylinder upstairs, and a handheld for stairs/awkward bits.

Now all she needs is a teeny tiny hoover to clean all the other ones Wink

MogTheForgetfulCat · 17/01/2011 20:38

Hmmm, maybe turning into Jareth's mum will be preferable to turning into my own mum Smile.

Have not, as yet, been tempted by tiny hand-held hoover specifically for table/crumbs (seen in crummy catalogue in Sunday paper) or, despite inherent cuteness, miniature Henry/Hetty for cleaning computer keyboard. So maybe there is hope for me.

I was thinking the same thing this week - I have a Dyson animal and it is a bugger to drag it up a winding staircase - I thought a non-upright would be great upstairs for getting under the bed

Haribojoe · 17/01/2011 20:41

YANBU. In our previous house we had two Dysons, one for upstairs and one down.

It's a long story but in our new house we've just got the one and I do miss having the luxury/convenience of a hoover upstairs to save on lugging one up and down.

God I sound so spoilt Blush

We have a downstairs Miele Cat and Dog and an upstairs Ewbank carpet sweeper. Takes up no space, very light, and as we don't wear shoes in the house, the upstairs carpets don't need quite such intense cleaning so we can vacuum weekly but use the carpet sweeper in between. £15 at Argos!

JarethTheGoblinKing · 17/01/2011 20:56

In contrast to my Mum, we have one cylinder vacuum, in a 3 storey house (loft conversion).

tbh, I think I've hoovered 2-3 times since I was pregnant (there has to be an upside to SPD?) so DP does it.

We have a carpet sweeper for me emergencies Grin

JarethTheGoblinKing · 17/01/2011 20:58

Oh Mog, I do have a cow-shaped mini crumb hoover Grin

maybe there's hope for me after all.

Buda · 17/01/2011 21:06

We have a Miele cat & dog and a roomba.

The cleaner carries the vacuum upstairs. Blush
