Going Out In Socks

JHHJ · 17/01/2011 16:32

I kind of read the thread "to really not understand going out in your pyjamas" and thought I ask how common is it for girls to go out in their socks\without shoes?

My granddaughters come home from school kick off their shoes and then go out in their socks, be it to play out to the shops, cinema or wherever.

I found this really odd and when I brought it up with my daughter who says if they are comfortable that is fine

Called her irresponsible a few weeks ago when I found them playing in the snow wearing flimsy clothing, white socks, no shoes. Posed about this on here but lost the log on details so had to registered

The only time i came across this was summer last year in western super mare where a lot of girls where playing on the beach and promenade in ther socks with no shoes

So AIBU

Also could someone post a key of short cut words. I know AIBU and DD and FIL is and some others but some give me a real headache

Mine would probably go in and out of the garden in socks or bare feet if it were dry and warm, but certainly not anywhere else and certainly not in snow! I would find going to the cinema in socks rather odd too. They must have feet like leather!

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 17/01/2011 16:35

I'd never heard of the socks thing (though I did spend a summer pretty muc barefoot, at 15); don't the socks wear out quickly?

Short cut words.

AtYourCervix · 17/01/2011 16:37

no. it's weird and the socks would get filthy and holey. bare feet fine but not just socks.

DirtyMartini · 17/01/2011 16:39

V v v weird! I have never seen this.

Suppose it depends where you live but I think it's manky in the extreme. Hygiene, etc etc etc. Pavements and sticky cinema floors -- their socks must be soooo minging

SO YANBU. And welcome to MN :)

Al1son · 17/01/2011 16:41

My girls like to take their shoes off all the time so we have a rule. 'Shoes on or socks off'. I don't mind them being outside barefoot but I do mind them trashing sock.

usualsuspect · 17/01/2011 16:44

Seems odd in the winter ...mine often played in the garden in just socks in the summer

Poledra · 17/01/2011 16:44

Agree with all the others - barefoot's fine but I'm buggered if I'm letting them ruin perfectly good socks by running around outside in them And definitely only when the weather merits it (I hate having cold feet - you always project your dislikes onto your DCs, don;t you? Wink)

JHHJ · 17/01/2011 16:44

Some days their socks are filthy by the end of the day some days they are surprisingly not

They do not last long a day or two, my daughters says their cheaper then shoes

Thanks for the welcome DirtyMartini

That's weird. I wouldn't go out in just socks. Shoes, or bare feet, but not socks. The socks would get filthy! And if you stepped in something wet then the wetness would stay on your foot for ages.

LaurieFairyonthetreeEatsCake · 17/01/2011 16:48

But if the socks are disposable they won't be cheaper than shoes.

How odd.

knitty · 17/01/2011 16:50

YANBU
Sounds very strange.

JHHJ · 17/01/2011 16:51

Thanks for the link OldLadyKnowsNothing

That's really odd.

Apart from anything else shoes protect your feet from things like puddles and broken glass that might be lying around.

Never ever heard of this. I did know a girl at uni who went around barefoot but that was different.

pozzled · 17/01/2011 17:07

Never heard of this. Going out in the snow with only socks on- I would agree that this is irresponsible, their poor feet. I would also be very concerned about glass etc on the streets.

ILovedYou · 17/01/2011 17:59

it is dangerous!

Today i went to the bathroom and trod on a broken tealight that the cat had flicked off the bathroom shelf. the thing went straight through my flip flop into the sole of my foot.

Being outdoors with no adequate footwear is mindless.

YADNBU

charliesmommy · 17/01/2011 18:00

Weird... very weird.

Also unsafe too.

nannynobnobs · 17/01/2011 18:02

Really strange, how on earth is it cheaper to throw away a pack of socks a week rather than buy a pair of Asda pumps?! I'm dumbfounded.

jendifa · 17/01/2011 18:23

ISNT Were you at Birmingham uni? A close friend was known for going round there barefoot and would be funny if it was her!

I'm known for wearing socks a lot. Generally wherever I am, I'll take my shoes off, and, if allowed, will walk round in just socks. I wouldn't go outside though, unless putting rubbish out etc. If I'm in the cinema of similar I'll generally take my shoes off and cross my legs, but only because I find that more comfortable. I definitely don't get through an excessive amount of socks though!!

ISNT · 17/01/2011 18:26

No this was when I was at King's in London. She was american and had short dreadlocks. Was it the same girl? She could have moved on after I knew her!

Her feet used to get filthy, it made me a bit squeamish TBH.

jendifa · 17/01/2011 18:32

No, no dreadlocks. Shame!

Sorry for hijack!

RJRabbit · 17/01/2011 18:47

How strange, not to mention very wasteful and expensive.

ISNT · 17/01/2011 19:09

Was worth a try Grin

0karen · 17/01/2011 22:53

What makes it so weird?

WimpleOfTheBallet · 17/01/2011 22:56

OP...I don't beleve you.

WimpleOfTheBallet · 17/01/2011 22:57

believe even.
