to think that cunting Cow and Gate with their 'clever' marketing about babies 'needing iron' and funding 'research' have fucked up the last 10 years of improving and supporting breastfeeding?

  1. 3 of the authors of that 'research' are funded by formula milk or baby food companies.
  1. physiological third stage anyone?

Funds/grants are hard to come by Labour spent all our money on fatties with 7 kids

Mingg · 14/01/2011 21:42

Oh jeeeez

WimpleOfTheBallet · 14/01/2011 21:43

Huh?

TheMonster · 14/01/2011 21:44

FFS.
Biscuit

pommedeterre · 14/01/2011 21:46

Biscuit would have been so much more elegant. sigh.

toddlerwrangler · 14/01/2011 21:47

Oh hell, here we go again. Anything that puts BF in a positive light (lets take the Gospal text PoBF) is accurate and useful. Anything that suggests otherwise is a conspiracy, genarlly manufactured by forumla companies. Obviously.

AtYourCervix · 14/01/2011 21:48

physiological third stage of labour - villified for yonks because of a mythical massive overdose of blood leading to hugely inflated iron levels in newborns.

formula milk compaines recommending their brand because 'babies need iron and x% of babies are iron deficiant' and 'you'd need 4000 pints of cows milk to replenish your stores of iron and if you don't give this to your baby they won't be hapy bllocks

research funded by formula milk companies finding that breastfed babies are more likely to be iron deficiant at 6 months.

Hmm Hmm and Hmm

I don't get this AT ALL. I never BF - it just didn't work. I tried and tried but nothing. I always knew and understood that breast is best though. That message is everywhere! I just don't get why people get so het up about the FF people. Do what YOU need to do to feed YOUR baby.

AtYourCervix · 14/01/2011 21:49

sorry. it's what i think.

and now billions of women up and down the country will be thinking they need to give the babies food or formula before they are ready.

BiscuitBiscuit

it's all very tit for tat on here tonight

Shakirasma · 14/01/2011 21:49

I don't think anyone really believes that formula is better than breast milk, not in this country anyway.

I doubt any marketing by cow and gate has anything to do with anyones decision to ff, it's purely to get people to choose their formula over their competitors, after the decision not to bf has already been made by the mother.

AtYourCervix · 14/01/2011 21:51

and that is fine porto. absolutely. 'm with you on that one.

it's just the massive media coverage about one research study which will change things hugely.

rather like the breech trial years ago.

yet another way of bashing new mothers and women generally.

Portofino · 14/01/2011 21:51

Sorry the story in the news was that you maybe don;t have to wait to 6 months to wean. It wasn't an instruction to feed pie to 4 month old babies.

nancy75 · 14/01/2011 21:52

atyourcervix, tbh your posts make you sound like the kind of person that wouldn't believe any research that you didn't fit with your viewpoint.

As a non breast feeder i heard the breast is best message loud and clear, my reasons for not doing it had nothing to do with evil formula companies.

Booandpops · 14/01/2011 21:52

I don't really care. Do what your baby needs I say. Boob formula or food. IMO allergys are genetic so make no real difference what route or when you take it as long as you and bubba are happy. Out of my mum friends the 2 dc's exclusively bf are the 2 with asthma. There dads have asthma so would feeding formula made much difference to them? Make up Yr own mind.

AtYourCervix · 14/01/2011 21:52

it's the extra iron thing that's bugging me tonight

pommedeterre · 14/01/2011 21:54

The research wasn't about ff I don't get itttttt. I thought the bf lot would be all happy about bm or fm becoming just bm in the news.
Why are you still all arsey

lou4791 · 14/01/2011 21:54

I wish you were right about the marketing Shakirasma, but unfortunately formula companies have a long history of undermining breastfeeding to increase business.

AtYourCervix · 14/01/2011 21:54

unicefs response

BitOfFun · 14/01/2011 21:55

I think that there has been a glut of breastfeeding threads the last couple of days and you may be getting some backlash here due to PC fatigue. I am just in awe that you can be arsed on a Friday night, tbh Grin

hoovercraft · 14/01/2011 21:55

mmmm yes I FF purely on the basis of clever marketing...saw an add about iron and thought "stuff that BF,its FF for me"

yeah, whatever

sickoftheholidays · 14/01/2011 21:57

What really psses me off about all this is that it is sd all to do with BF/FF and everything to do with the weaning age.
But as usual, the media just jumps on the band wagon about how BF isnt REALLY best for your baby after all.......

wannaBe · 14/01/2011 21:57

I think that people that rant on and on and on about breastfeeding and the need for breastfeeding and the evils of the formula manufacturers and the aledged constant undermining of breastfeeding do far more damage to the image of bf than anything else, because you make bf mothers look like obsessed lunes.

so here have a Biscuit

but only if you're over the age of 17 weeks.

AtYourCervix · 14/01/2011 21:58

i'm arsey because it is announced as 'Breastfeeding for 6 months is bad'

had it been headlined as 'some babies need food before 6 months' i wouldn't be quite so irate.
