Out of the top 200 schools hitting the target, only 8 were not independant or academically selective schools.

Come September I think it will be worth getting my wallet out for my DD's future.

Well done loopy that sums it up exactly! My DCs school has kept the language requirement but doesn't insist on history or geography. The humanities category seems too narrow and I wonder if DS is going to end up with a lot of history haters in his class next year when he's chosen his options.

True enough trixie. I am trying hard not to take generalisations personally but it is tough to do in these conversations and it can be hard to remember that just because I and the people I know behave a certain way it is not true for everyone.

On the point about better salary - these attract everyone not just better teachers (assuming of course that they are not opposed to working in private). People who are not as good a teacher do not look at a better package and think "I am not worth that" they think "I will try for that, I would like the extra money" just like people in any other business. Offering more money does not mean, in itself, that you are going to get better teachers.
