my daughter wants to do beauty pageants she asks everyday when she is going to one. If i do let her do them where are the best ones and where do i buy the dresses from. I would also like some opinions on the pageant because I'm not to sure about them. Thanks

I don't have any personal experience of pageants, but I've watched programmes about them. Frankly I don't like what I have seen - they seem to require very little girls to dress up and wear make up and dance etc. in a manner which is far beyond their years and often borders (or crosses the line into)sexualisation.

How old is your little girl - does she really understand what is involved? (apart from moral objections I imagine it is very costly and time consuming)

Can you encourage her unto another hobby? - perhaps drama or dancing where she would also get to dress up in costumes, but would be treated as the little girl she is.

Sorry but I am so anti children's pageants, they are so fucked up in so many ways. To me they teach girls that in order to be accepted they have to focus on aesthetics and they sexualise girls from far too young an age. Truly, truly hideous concept, steer clear at all costs.

You say you're not too sure about pageants. I think your instincts are absolutely correct on this.

I don't like the idea of children (or indeed anyone) entering into a competition which is based entirely on their looks. Teaches them that being pretty is the only thing that matters Hmm.

Could you steer your daughter towards other sorts of competing and performing, for example dance, drama, music clubs? Gymnastics or other sports?

There was a great documentary on pageants recently.
It would put me off for life.
I think it was on Living or channel five. Scary stuff!

They dont have them in the UK do they?I watched a TV programme called Toddlers and Tiaras which was simultaneously sick making and compelling-tiny girls all spray tan, false eyelashes and lipstick ,smirking coquettishly and wiggling their hips-it looked like every perverts fantasy show to me.

I always think of Jon-Benet Ramsay.
