Completely insanse waste - Fish Fight

Haven't seen any other threads on this - its appalling that so much good fish is thrown back dead because of the way the CAP works.

Please sign up here.

When we've been to France there are loads of 'odd' local species of fish that we try but in the larger supermarkets the range is much more limited. No local fishmonger here Sad.

coldtits · 14/01/2011 14:33

I've had both pollock and coley from the Morrison's fish counter. You can spot coley a mile away because it's slightly pink and thr fillets are huge and very cheap.

southofthethames · 14/01/2011 14:39

Another ludicrous EU agricultural rule (like the one about throwing away carrots that are not shaped uniformly!!!) which is immoral, wasteful and drives up the price of the food item. The reason why it is immoral is that they are driving fisherman to lie about what they have caught - a dead fish back in the sea is still a caught fish. They should have a system whereby the excess fish is not thrown back but documented as "collateral damage" - the fish can then be sold but the amounts documented so that it can be used to calculate the quota accurately for the next year. If quotas are for ecological reasons, throwing back dead fish only gives you a falsified record as to how much is being caught. If a large amount of cod, for example, is being caught as collateral damage, they can just say no more cod next year (or very little).

You'd think some of these rules were made by drunk 18 year olds in the pub rather than sober responsible adults....maybe they are.

We should start another Mumsnet campaign about this too - I'd be happy to sign up.

NigellaPleasePollockWithMe · 14/01/2011 14:40

Go sign the HFW - link at start of thread.

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 14/01/2011 14:43

It's hit 300 000!

SexyDomesticatedDab · 14/01/2011 15:06

Just did the test on the site and came out a Dab hand - so it must be right then.

SlubberdeGurnard · 14/01/2011 15:28

Interesting about the non cod fishfingers. I'll have a closer look next time (although I hate being a freezer dithererer).

Never been to Morrisons. Are they really proper fishmongers (ie do stuff with fish out the back rather than just pissing about laying them artfully on the ice with a bit of parsley out front)?

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 14/01/2011 16:24

Don't think of it as freezer dithering, think of it as focused and targeted research.

Yes they are proper fishmongers at Morrisons. They will fillet before your very eyes. They have proper butchers too.

(If you have never been to Morrisons be warned, buy the pies but not the olives.)

SexyDomesticatedDab · 14/01/2011 16:30

Sainsbo have a good butcher / fish monger too. Can really sharpen a knife!

SlubberdeGurnard · 14/01/2011 16:37

Right, will be most focused and targetful on next Sainsbo's visit Grin

SlubberdeGurnard · 14/01/2011 16:45

I've just checked my Birds eye fish fingers and they are made from Pollock. All this time I assumed they were cod. Well I never.

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 14/01/2011 16:48

If they were cod they'd be saying 'COD fishfingers made from COD, our CODDIEST ever' on the box.
if they say nothing they're probably not cod.
it's like the opposite of free range eggs where it's a case of if it doesn't say it assume the worst.

SlubberdeGurnard · 14/01/2011 17:00

lol @ coddiest ever.

tbh by the time I get to the freezer section in the supermarket I'm in glazed over automaton mode. The end is nigh just get some fish fingers and peas ...

I will do fish first next time when I am sprightly, fully focused and vigilant. Should probably print off the MCSs guide too.

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 14/01/2011 18:41

petition has passed a third of a million now.

LadyGaga · 14/01/2011 19:34

We love fish in our family.
I am from abroad from a fish loving country.

The prices in the UK are so expensive so people don't buy it.

I bought yesterdry 2 lemon soles-for £17.00 at my London local fishmonger.

I would love him tackling this aspect on his campaign.
Even sardines are so expensive in England.

Many fishmongers I have visited are disgusting. Smelly, dirty shops with old fish... no wonder people don't eat fish.

Fish shops are just dire. Most of the fish and chips shops I have tried sell only frozen fish and soggy chips. It is painful to taste.

I will now read the whole thread....

Lotster · 14/01/2011 20:08

Will be back to post more but yes, it's a bloody DISGRACE.

RipMacWinkle · 14/01/2011 20:30

Yes, DH and I couldn't actually believe this the other night. It's so wasteful.

Have signed up to the fish fight.

Also, pondering changing my name to RipMackerelWinkle

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 14/01/2011 21:03

ooh, go on.
Winkles are already good, of course. But no-one will notice you are sustainable and it takes bloody ages to eat them and you need a pin - have you ever done it?
I had some and everyone else said they were like snot but I thought they were lovely Smile

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 14/01/2011 21:04

I suppose that's why they're sustainable - they take so long to eat they can breed some more before you've finished the bag. Smile

RipMacWinkle · 14/01/2011 21:26

I think I've had them - do you mean whelks?

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 14/01/2011 21:29

no, whelks are big and rubbery. Winkles are tiny - shell is less than a cm long and you have to, er, winkle the snot meat out with a pin.

RipMacWinkle · 14/01/2011 21:30

My dad used to make us eat things with a pin when we were wee. I thought it was whelks but maybe it was them. Vile they were too.

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 14/01/2011 21:34

would have been winkles, I expect. last time I had whelks I think it was with a chip fork.
