Due today but am feeling unfeasibly nervous about having a boy.

I know this is going to sound stupid but I'm really scared that I'm going to have a boy, and I don't know anything about them. I have one little girl already, grew up with a sister, girl cousins, went to an all girls school, never had boys as friends.

I don't know what the sex of this little one is going to be but the nearer I get to giving birth (not actually in labour currently, but I guess it's imminent), the more nervous I get that I'm going to have a boy and won't know what to do with him. I know that a baby is a baby is a baby, regardless of gender, and I honestly don't know why the thought of having a baby boy is freaking me out so much, but any advice or good mumsnet sense to calm me down would be great.

Before I get flamed, I don't think girls are better than boys. I'm not into all the pink stuff (though my daughter is!). It's just that I don't have a frame of reference for understanding how to bring a boy up.

ElusiveMoose - I agree DS1 is not a stereotypical boy

ElusiveMoose · 12/01/2011 12:03

Forgot to say, please do come back when you've delivered, OP, and let us know what you had!

betterstayanonymous · 12/01/2011 14:52

Still not delivered! There I was thinking this one would be early! I do feel much better having read all your comments - much less irrationally scared and more hopeful that this'll be fine whatever flavour baby I end up having. I'll definitely let you know either way.

Good luck - very exciting. I love it when other people have babies Grin

Just in case anyone's following this.... I had a girl last Saturday! After all that. Still now I only have to worry about rivalry between the two of them, me not comparing them or mixing up their names. Thanks for all your support x

Congratulations on your baby girl! I have a girl and then a boy and still get their names mixed up so you'll be fine!

SlightlyJaded · 19/01/2011 12:42

OP I was like you.

No brothers, one DD and no clue as to what to do if I had a boy

Along came DS. He is my Hero and my Angel

When DD(5) is winging at me to do something and I am tired, DS(3) tells her off and says "leave mummy alone, she is very tired" then gives me kisses and cuddles and tells me I am beautiful.

He is not my 'favourite' child as DD is fab and my little friend. I love them both the same but I was worried I wouldn't know what to do with a DS and would feel less of a bond but this is absolutely not the case.

Good luck

I wanted a girl but I had a boy, I thought it was a boy from the get go, but I'm really happy I had a boy, after looking at the clothing in shops if I had a girl I'd have had to dress her in boys clothing because I don't like pink things with princess written all over them and flowers and crap.

My boy likes watching top gear and is fascinated by pictures of cars so I buy him things with cars on because he shows interest in them, which is fine by me because I love cars and hated dolls when I was a kid.

He will like baby things as he gets older to want more specific toys he will let you understand what kind of things interest him.

ElusiveMoose · 19/01/2011 22:49

Huge congratulations!! Hope you're enjoying your lovely little girl. xx

Morloth · 19/01/2011 23:11

Just wait until you have a sweaty little head resting against your shoulder because he is exhausted from all the running/climbing/jumping etc and you breathe in that pure 'BOY' smell.

There is nothing finer.

DS1 and DS2 are currently "wrestling" on the floor (though DS2 is only 10 months so DS1 has toned it down).

The main difference I have noticed between my boys and the girls I know is that girls have 'gears'. My boys have two speeds. ON ON ON and OFF (asleep).
