To be shocked and actually quite sickened by this t shirt?

I was in River Island earlier today, huge big display, centre of which was a (mens) t shirt emblazoned with "born in the uk".

Have I missed some totally innocent explaination for this? As far as I can see it's a poor excuse for racism and xenophobia.

It actually made me feel quite sick, it would be something I would expect to see on a BNP march, not in a high street store Sad

I think it might just be your interpretation. I often used to see "made in ...." shirts on babies and kids when they were in vogue.

Funny thing is..I bet the shirt wasnt made in the UK>

lifeinagoldfishbowl · 08/01/2011 16:28

Agree with Altinkum

It is OK to be proud to be born in the UK. It is OK to be proud to be English. It is OL to be proud of our history and heritage.

lifeinagoldfishbowl · 08/01/2011 16:28

*OK

geordieminx · 08/01/2011 16:28

It's not saying anything remotely sickening though...I am actually a bit sickened by your paranoia...it's extremely unhealthy to equate patriotism with racism.

Poshpaws · 08/01/2011 16:31

Also, 'born in the uk' does not automatically mean you are White.

I wouldn't wear it, however

lifeinagoldfishbowl · 08/01/2011 16:31

Agree Wimple

RobF · 08/01/2011 16:31

What is racist about it? It's a play on "Born in the USA" more than anything.

pinkstinks · 08/01/2011 16:32

Agree wimple.

rather worrying that it made you actually feel sick. Probably the fear that it could be racist etc that did that. It is over-reactions such as this that cause innocent things to be perceived as possible racist statements when they are not (and this takes attention away from real issues)

Whayever you do, don't listen to Bruce Springsteen Grin

WhiteTrash · 08/01/2011 16:33

Racism isnt the first thing that springs to mind, but I see what you are saying. But I agree with the others that you might be over thinking it. It isnt unlike the 'made in England' thing that I have seen on the back of peoples necks. Classy. ;)

SleepingLion · 08/01/2011 16:33

I hope you were equally shocked when was released - something you would expect to hear on a Ku Klux Klan march, not on mainstream radio stations, surely Hmm

SleepingLion · 08/01/2011 16:34

Ooh x-post with RobF and sixlostmonkeys Grin

saffy85 · 08/01/2011 16:34

YABU. As others said theres nowt wrong with being proud of your heritage. Would you have an issue with an indian person wearing a "made in India" t shirt?

fedupofnamechanging · 08/01/2011 16:35

Do you walk around all day looking for things to be offended by?

saffy85 · 08/01/2011 16:36

meant born not made. was smirking at the irony pointed out by flying visit.

Orissiah · 08/01/2011 16:36

My parents and all my family are from India. I was born in the UK and a proud of it. I always say I am British when people ask me where I am from (but am hapy enough saying my parents are from India).

jeeeeeeze

you are not only being unreasonable, you are being ridiculous...

I suggest you go to an EDL march to see what true racism and hatred is all about, then you might find out what really is sickening..

earwicga · 08/01/2011 16:40

YANBU. And I would give anybody wearing this t-shirt a wide berth.
