If ever I read a story in the paper like "man drowns trying to rescue dog from river" I am always left wondering what happened to the dog. There was on a few weeks ago "man dies trying to rescue dog from cliff ledge". What happened to the dog??? Other people say "who cares, the man died, that's what the story is about" but AIBU for wanting to know the dogs fate?

The dog lives..... Every single time. Moral of the tale is 'don't try to rescue your dog'.

Agree with chil.
I was always told a horrible story about 4 people drowning in the sea trying to rescue a Labrador. The lab had a lovely swim around, then got out and had a good shake. 4 people died.

The dog always lives - and normally that's the last line of the story.

No the dog doesn't always survive! There was one last year where a couple tried to save their dog in a flooded river and all three of them drowned.

YANBU. I met a man who had lost his dog at sea, from a yacht. Very sad.
