I think my boss is actually....

I texted my boss this afternoon to give her a heads up that I will be calling in sick tomorrow as I have been diagnosed with gastroenteritis this morning. Explosive shits, projectile vomit and now dry heaving, the lot.

Four hours later I get a reply saying basically she wants me in as she is sick and she wants to go home when I get in! Bear in mind she had a lot of random sick hours off over Xmas and the fact that I covered her last week even though I'd started feeling ropey by then. I sent her a reply saying that unless the diarrhea stopped, I wouldn't be going out anywhere. She relied then saying she will need a doc's note?! WTF?! Oh and she threatened me with a phonecall to my area manager ( common practice for her when she can't get her own way) I am so annoyed. On top of feeling like death I am now feeling shit about work.

Have posted about her conduct before, BTW...

southeastastra, are you my mum?

zipzap · 06/01/2011 22:42

Have you got an HR department? Can you get them involved?

And/Or pre-empt her and contact area manager yourself to say that you are so poorly and can't get to work, that your boss has contacted you to say that she also seems to be sick and wants to go home so is there anything area manager could do to sort out cover for the boss while you are so ill? Then contact your boss to say that to save her the trouble Grinyou have contacted the area manager yourself and asked her to sort out cover... Hopefully that will take the wind out of her sails!

Ring your doc's surgery and find out what their policy for providing a sickness note for someone with gastroenteritis - you say you have been diagnosed so guessing you may have spoken to a doc or medical person? THey may be able to do one for you to pick up when you are better or fax one to your work. or you can tell them that they don't issue doc notes for until you have been ill for a week or whatever so she will just have to wait for it. Plus they are not going to want you going into the surgery if you have got a d&v bug that would spread easily there!

Also - did they give you any guidelines as to when you can go back - the usual 48 hours after last bout of d &/or v? If so, just keep repeating that to them, saying you have been told you must stay at home and effectively quarantine yourself until this time, otherwise you will be responsible for spreading the bug to other workers and customers and people that you are near to and you do not want to start an epidemic, nor do you think that you ought to make most of the staff where you work ill - tailoring this to your individual circumstances obviously!

If you have been diagnosed with ge then nobody else is going to want it (except your boss who sounds like she wants to pretend to have it for an excuse for more time off)

Being very generous to your boss, maybe you have both managed to contract teh same bug - if she says she is sick then maybe you could also tell her that it sounds like you are both suffering from the same thing (unless there is a chance that she is pregnant?) and that she also ought to speak to doc as likely to get worse before it gets better and that both of you are likely to be off for several days... See if that makes her any nicer about it?

Sorry, just realised have gone on for far too long Blush

zipzap · 06/01/2011 22:44

Also meant to say hope you get well soon. And see that 28 other people managed to post in the time it took me to write a single post Blush dh is always telling me I talk too much - and spend too long on here, obviously typing too much too.Grin

ThisIsANiceCage · 06/01/2011 22:45

pmsl @ southeastastra. What does diarrhoea sound like over the internet?

bupcakesandcunting · 06/01/2011 22:46

I work in a shop. Get dem customers to me sick bed I find dem all nice dresses.

The doctor I spoke to by phone (no appointments for a week!) said I can resume normal life 48 hours after last d&v bout. My boss reckons she has real flu. She doesn't. I know she doesn't.

Bogeyface · 06/01/2011 22:47

and I would be contacting the AM about your boss and making a formal complaint when you are better. She is a nightmare and yoiu shouldnt have to put up with it. It sounds like she gets away with behaving like this because no one has ever brought her up on it.

Get well soon.......(parp!)

southeastastra · 06/01/2011 22:47

i am harsh i admit, if op can post this coherent op then can get their arse into work imo Grin

BuzzLightBeer · 06/01/2011 22:49

you can post on mn while suffering from explosive diarrhea, you can't sell someone a pretty dress with it.

BertieBasset · 06/01/2011 22:49

Lick your boss's face, and while you're at it grab Astra too Grin

bupcakesandcunting · 06/01/2011 22:51

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 06/01/2011 23:06

Who's all getting D&V?!

FabbyChic · 06/01/2011 23:06

You have never been entitled to pay for the first three days of sickness. I am in the UK. Statutory Sick pay only pays from the 4th day on, that is the legal requirement.

bupcakesandcunting · 06/01/2011 23:10

You bastard! I am the only one in thus house smited by this disease. Plus I think I caught it from a man in b&q on Tuesday.

OP posts:
FabbyChic · 06/01/2011 23:10

Here

Statutory sick pay has three waiting days, no one has an automatic right to be paid for the first three days off sick, you have to be off sick four to qualify.

Statutory Sick Pay

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 06/01/2011 23:12

What the hell were you doing with the man in B&Q??!

CupcakesHay · 06/01/2011 23:16

Just send her email/text back and say you CANNOT come in. Say sorry she's sick too - but you cannot be x amount of mins from a bathroom - and there's no way you can make it to work and serve customers - esp if it could be contagious - explain you treid to make doc's appt but they are backed up - say you called NHS direct and explained symptoms. Def agree about cc-ing your area manager in - always better to let other people know state of play if you have an awkward boss.

make sure you try and stay hydrated - get someone to get you some rehydration salts - and drink lots of water, even if you don't feel like it.
