In being surprised that apparently 98% of UK women under 25 have no pubic hair at all?

Longstocking2 · 04/01/2011 23:52

Is that true?

A friend who is a practice nurse says she presumes it's just a fashion. None of her women under 25 who come for smear tests have any pubic hair.. all shaved, shorn, waxed to nada.

Obviously that's fine but it seems a little universal to me. Aren't there any rebels out there?
Is it just for the boys they do it?

Does the image not come from porn originally?

would love to be enlightened!
Clearly I'm over 25 Grin

what is the point of pubic hair ? what does it actually DO ? why does it grow at puberty ? why do we want to get rid of hair ? why is it considered unfeminine to have a moustache, hairy armpits , legs etc ?

Lara2 · 06/01/2011 20:46

This is too long to read, but I was staggered that so many people remove all their pubic hair!!!! I trimmed once ( it grew like crazy when I was pregnant with DS1 :)) and itched like mad when it grew back - never again!!!!!

Sadly, as I grow ever closer to 50, it has become almost non existant, thin and old lady like!!! EEK!

It's all just a mystery to me - but each to their own. I do always do my armpits and legs, despite being brought up by a traditional German mum who thought this was the devils work!! :)

Oblomov · 06/01/2011 20:47

No faking here. Never needed to. Wink

alexpolismum · 06/01/2011 20:48

AmandaCooper - my doctor (who I have known for years and was present at the births of all 3 of my children, so knows me well) might have a heart attack at the sight!

SarahStrattonsBaubles · 06/01/2011 20:48

Right well in that case kindly get off my back and stop telling me I am ridiculous. How fucking patronising is that? Have I said you, or anyone else, are ridiculous for your opinions? No. Have I accused you, or anyone else, on here of being dirty or smelly or a minger because you have hair? No.

alexpolismum · 06/01/2011 20:48

no faking here either! Grin

alexpolismum · 06/01/2011 20:50

Sarah - stop taking everything so personally! I said I find the implication that I do not take care of myself ridiculous. I still do. I did not say that you personally were ridiculous.

alexpolismum · 06/01/2011 20:54

Have I accused you, or anyone else, on here of being dirty or smelly or a minger because you have hair

Rightly or wrongly, I read in your post the implication that women who no not depilate do not take care of themselves. I might find that patronising, too.

SarahStrattonsBaubles · 06/01/2011 20:58

"Sarah - I find the implication that I do not look after myself simply because I do not remove hair rude. (and somewhat ridiculous)"

Oh right. Really I must brush up on my English. Obviously I still struggle with my mother tongue.

I still find it bizarre, and actually faintly amusing, that it's the hairy brigade that get so personal and insulted by us non hairy brigade. We obviously don't give a fig what you do with your hair yet we are the ones who are accusing you all of being smelly etc. Find me one post where someone actually states that being hairy=being smelly or unhygenic.

It's personal choice. Why the hell that can't just 'be' is way beyond me. What on earth is wrong with live and let live ffs?

AmandaCooper · 06/01/2011 20:59

So did I. How can you say that removing hair is taking care of yourself without implying that not removing it is neglecting yourself?

alexpolismum · 06/01/2011 21:02

Well, your command of English is your own business, although I personally fail to see the use of pronouns in the second person in my sentence that you quoted above.

What on earth is wrong with live and let live

well exactly.

SarahStrattonsBaubles · 06/01/2011 21:06

Oh and to the poster who asked if I never cut my hair or nails after I called waxing a grooming Forth Bridge, well I cut my nails nice and short with clippers when I'm cutting my son's. I don't wear polish ever, and I have my hair cut nice and short so it styles itself while I sleep and I don't have to wash it so often. I realise this makes me sound like a woman of 'sensible shoes' but m'eh I guess I find this high maintenance grooming a symptom of vanity and frankly of someone with too much time on their hands, or on their bald highly polished minge.

What's wrong with vanity? Or, as I would look at it, taking care of oneself? Why not make the very best of what you have and celebrate your body.

There, I posted again for you. Now you can read as many insults into it as you like but the fact remains that IF you read it in context is is pretty obvious that it is in direct response to the post above.

Which is also actually patronising and rude. But oddly you didn't find that so. Probably because it agrees with what you think.

Chuss · 06/01/2011 21:07

I'm a naturally dark, hairy canary Grin

I hate it, and shave as much off as I can - I was teased relentlessly at secondary school by the boys for having hairy legs (mum wouldn't allow me to shave them, I rebelled when I was 13). Doubt the boys at the time were avid porn viewers, but they still had it in for me Sad

I have a horrible memory of being asked to stand on the table by the art teacher to be 'drawn' and all of the boys (bar 2 or 3) drew me as some sort of yetti. Really screwed me up, if I'm honest.

I wish I didn't have this hatred of being hairy because it's a lot of hard work, keeping on top of it.

Used to think I was the only freak on the planet with a hairy bumhole, until I read a few posts on this thread!

SarahStrattonsBaubles · 06/01/2011 21:12

Because AmandaCooper it is a matter of personal choice.

Maybe you eat more healthily than me. Maybe you exercise more than I do. Why do you do that? Is it because you want to take care of your body? Well I like to take care of my body's appearance in a way that pleases me. I really fail to see what difference there is in that or why one is being sensible and the other 'vanity from someone who has far too much time on their hands'. My skin is healthy and looks good because I take care of it. My hair is healthy and looks good because I take care of it. I like having long hair, yes it's a lot more work than short hair but that is my choice. I also exercise and eat healthily because I want my body to be healthy, last as long as possible and look good. Because that is what I want. For me.

alexpolismum · 06/01/2011 21:17

Sarah - I have reread your comment in context of the preceeding post. My comment still stands. The implications of your post go beyond that context (and that includes 'make the best of...celebrate your body'). However, I appreciate that you do not agree with me.

SnowyGonzalez · 06/01/2011 21:22

Northernrock. Listing "hair extensions" in first place in a discussion about pube management was an act of pure genius. I applaud you.

Grin
dementedma · 06/01/2011 21:23

i always feel that a hairless pudenda resembles that of a little girl's. What kind of men are attracted to that pre-pubescent look?

HerBeatitude · 06/01/2011 21:26

But why have women in the west suddenly started to make this personal choice en masse in the last 10-20 years?

Do all of you who make this personal choice, or not, really believe that you are in no way influenced by the culture in which you live?

Because if so, then you are the only human beings in the world not to be so. Apart from high court judges, obv.

northernrock · 06/01/2011 21:32

Why thank you Snowy Grin

Obviously I didn't mean merkins, but hey, that could be the next big thing!

SnowyGonzalez · 06/01/2011 21:38

I now have an image in my head of people growing, taming and waxing their long, luxuriant pubes and shaping them into a wild array of artistic designs! This kind of pube husbandry could transform the porn industry - in fact it could spawn a new 'pube industry'! Think of the impact on the economy! Oh, man, I've gotta write to Dave Cameron! Grin

SnowyGonzalez · 06/01/2011 21:40

HerBea - I've always thought the whole objectivity of judges thing to be a pile of untrimmed, hairy bollocks. Aren't judges paid to be judgy? Pah!

Grin
HerBeatitude · 06/01/2011 21:45

I was thinking more along the lines of "who are the beatles?".... Grin

SnowyGonzalez · 06/01/2011 21:51

Arf - is that an actual quote from a blissfully culture-oblivious judge, then?!

HerBeatitude · 06/01/2011 21:54

Yes it's a real, actual quote.

The answer was : "They are a popular beat-combi, your honour"

I had enormous pleasure recently, in informing a friend of mine who is somewhat out of the loop as regards popular culture (or indeed any culture) that JLS are a popular beat combi. She had no idea...

CameronCook · 06/01/2011 22:04

Very late to this thread but I first shaved it all off after reading Jilly Coooper back in the late 80s.

I liked the feel of being smooth, it made cleaning up during my period easier, but as I'm lazy I leave the big triangle at the front, so just shave underneath.
