Why is it that Robert Downey-Junior..

(who I LOVE) is given an enormous amount of support/plaudits/leeway when someone like Lindsay Lohan (ok not Helen Mirren but is a pretty decent actor unlike Paris Hilton, Kerry Katona and others of that ilk) is derided and demonised? Is it because she is female or am I missing something? Is it because she is percieved as courting celebrity? I don't know, but some of her films are well acted and I can't think of many female celebrities for whom silly behaviour is forgiven easily.

Lindsay Lohan is pretty rubbish. Was in a few teeny movies, and is now just a pointless druggie. SHe doesn;t seem to do anything worthwhile and isn't acting anymore. Downey Junior is not the best actor ever but still better than her.

What has Robert Downey Jr done? I'm not familiar with him, but are you saying that he shouldn't be appreciated as an actor because of his personal life?

He did get put in prison for drugs

But he has also made some decent films and is a pretty good actor. Also is clean now.

I don't see why this question should be on the feminist board. It's a good question! It's not an unreasonable question imo.

But has RDJ finished using drugs now? Just wondering. Lindsay Lohan can act. I think that she's considered a good actress, just really unreliable. KK well I do have a spot spot for KK because no matter how much she's kicked she gets back up again everytime.

Robert has AFAIK shown nothing more than sad addiction and a battle with substance/alcohol.

LiLo on the other hand has shown only contempt and a total lack of respect for the law, legal process or herself. she has issues taking her punishements seriously, drinks with an anti drink tag, had FUCK YOU put on her nails for the judgement....

Lindsay Lohan played an American child and an English child in the same movie (the remake of the parent trap). That can't have been that easy. She made a good job of that.

You are probably right in thinking this should be in Feminism - however, DH asked the question and I felt that the Lindsay Lohan issue might be a bit low-brow for people to respond to! Grin It may be true that she is a teen movie girl but I liked her in "Freaky Friday" and "Mean Girls" and just wondered why some people get more second chances?

She makes absolutely no effort, constantly breaks her bail and generally acts like a twat. I'm sure she would be given a second chance if she tried, but she's already so rich she probably doesnt give a shit

Lindsay Lohan is an ok actor.. ish.. but Robert Downey Jnr is really, really good.

Also, the gutter press are far more interested in her 'wild child' antics than his - and yes, this is partly because she's female and didn't behave as 'nice girls' should but she also benefited from that as much as she's now suffering.

Although Robert Downie Jnr is still pretty famous i'd say he was more of the generation of say Drew Barrimore who also fucked herself up big time but didn't quite do it so publicly as Lindsay Lohan.

Li-Lo lived in the gutter press and was crucified by them too.

I think it is because she is good looking. People like to knock beauty, it makes them feel better and less inadequate. If she was Sean Penn or Mickey Rourke, people would say that she was a tormented genius. But because she is a good looking woman, many people only want to knock her and ridicule her achievements.

RDJ's arrest was years ago though, and since then he has got back to work and made a lot of films. At the time of the arrest, he was probably treated differently to the way he is treated now.

Lindsay Lohan made a few movies as a child/teenager and hasn't really worked for years now.

Also, the way the media treats celebrities now is quite different to RDJ's day - the internet has made a huge difference.

ok, have just googled and discovered that Drew Barrimore is ten years older than Lindsay Lohan and Robert Downey Jnr is ten years older than Drew Barrimore.

I think a lot has to do with those generational differences, the real gutter press (heat, perez hilton) didn't exist when DB and RDJ were being really wild.

RDJ's performance on chaplin was considered to be very good - exceptional even. He is an actor that wasted his exceptional talent through drugs/drink. Lindsey Lohan on the other hand is a lush/spoilt brat.

also, he's been sober since 2003, i don't think people were talking favourably about him as we are now back in 2000/01.

D'you know what? Posed a question in a semi-drunken moment with some valid reasoning but realise that my example was lousy!!! Didn't even know about the nails!....I like some of her films but she ain't all that!!! (scornful teenage emoticon!)But... some people seem to be more impervious to the repercussions of their wayward behviour than others.
