I have no idea what the obsession is, I'd never even hear of it, whatever it is, before I came on here :o

I'd never heard of it either. I think it's a metaphor for middle-classness. Like waitrose and Mandarin lessons.

I'd heard of it before but never realised it was scorned so much and had such heavy conotations with sterotypical 'middle-classness'

Not sure why it is such an MN obsession, I've had bits from there (like most places) for years and I only joined MN a yr ago. It's just a shop/catalogue, nowt more and no less in my book.
