to be upset that "we are not all in this together" i.e Skiing in Switzerland with George Osbourne

It makes me upset to read that the likes of George Osbourne & Zac Goldsmith are currently enjoying lavish holidays in the Caribbean (8k a week villa) & Klosters, Switzerland with their families when these very people are telling us that we are all in this together. Clearly they are not in this together, they are enjoying privileged lifestyles whilst we are seeing increases in our fuel, vat, cutbacks just about everywhere, increased railfares, this is highly insensitive conduct my our MP's but not surprising as most are out of touch with reality.

YANBU, ITA!

montysorry · 02/01/2011 10:36

I think it's naive to think 'all in this together' means people like George Osbourne suddenly deciding to live on 20kpa.

He was my MP before we moved earlier this year. He is from the Osbourne & Little wallpaper family and thus his wealth would really not be affected by the credit crunch.

It was a ridiculous statement for the Tories to use because their lives do not reflect those of the vast majority of the country.

But we don't live in a communist country and he is of course, free to spend his money how he sees fit.

montysorry · 02/01/2011 10:39

Plus, there are many mums on here who have been on lavish trips this Christmas and who will spend thousands skiing in Feb.

FishKebabs · 02/01/2011 10:42

It was George Osbourne that coined the phrase "We Are All In This Together". So what did he mean by this?

OP posts:
dessen · 02/01/2011 10:42

It's their money, nothing illegal with them spending it.

AnnoyingOrange · 02/01/2011 10:45

The rich should be encouraged to spend all their money - it puts money back in to the economy

FishKebabs · 02/01/2011 10:48

dessen, so why did George Osbourne coin the phrase "we are all in this together", I am trying to understand this but so far failing.

OP posts:
montysorry · 02/01/2011 10:49

He probably meant we as in the country. He was trying to urge the private sector to show pay restraint as he knew he was cutting the public sector drastically.

norfolkBRONZEturkey · 02/01/2011 10:49

Needs to be skiing in Scotland then Wink

2shoes · 02/01/2011 10:49

yabu
if you for one moment believed that we are all in this together

beanlet · 02/01/2011 10:49

That would be the Caribbean and Swiss economies then.

faverolles · 02/01/2011 10:49

So the rich should live frugal lives so the rest of us aren't jealous?
Or so they can experience how the other side lives?

expatinscotland · 02/01/2011 10:51

Don't see how they're doing anything any differently from how they have all their lives. They're carrying on how they always have because they were born rich.

Meh.

I didn't vote for them.

montysorry · 02/01/2011 10:52

I don't care who the politicians spend their money, I care how they spend my money.

tethersend · 02/01/2011 10:53

"The rich should be encouraged to spend all their money - it puts money back in to the economy"

Yes it does. The Swiss economy Confused

We should make the rich go to Butlins and spend their money there.

YANBU - I would love to 'be in it together' on a lovely holiday, especially in the Caribbean, or exchange the £8K holiday for £8K off the mortgage...

A 'political class' has, IMO, developed over the last 30 years where there does seem to be a sense of entitlement, but then there seems to be a general sense of entitlement throughout society.

Of course we'll never all be 'in it together' as all of our personal and especially financial circumstances are so diverse.

Stupid tag line to try and hood wink people into co-operating so the politicos don't have to be honest about

  1. The true 'state of the economy'

  2. The true political ideaological motives for sweeping changes in policy

GooseFatRoasties · 02/01/2011 10:55

If I had his money I would be doing the same. It's his money to spend as he wishes. However I don't think it is unreasonable to find it annoying that the people making these cuts have lifestyles that are going to be unaffected by them.

AnnoyingOrange · 02/01/2011 10:56

Global economy

you need to think in global terms - Britain does not exist in isolation

thatsnotmymonkey · 02/01/2011 10:57

He is a cunt. Plain and simple.

expatinscotland · 02/01/2011 10:58

Oh, he's definitely a cunt. So's lair, cheater Goldsmith. Nothing to do with how much money they have, though.

bb99, your 2nd point is one that seems to be being glossed over or ignored so much.

Yes, yes, we know we're in a bit of a stook but statistically, no worse than we have been previously. When the Tories were last in government, they were rarely in the black.

The current situation is allowing them to make huge sweeping changes and cuts for mainly ideological reasons under the guise of necessity. This is a once in a generation opportunity for those on the Right and we're all sucking it up because we believe we're about to end up a Third World country if we don't.

Disclaimer: I'm not suggesting we need to curb spending and make some cuts. I'm merely saying that we're (conveniently for the Tories) missing the point that the situation has placed beautifully into their hands from an idealogical POV.

FishKebabs · 02/01/2011 11:02

If he had not coined the phrase "We Are All In This Together" then no doubt this would not be a news story (Daily Mail) today. Do you think he meant every UK citizen was in this together including himself? It is puzzling? I wish I could understand what he meant.Hmm
