to be upset that "we are not all in this together" i.e Skiing in Switzerland with George Osbourne

It makes me upset to read that the likes of George Osbourne & Zac Goldsmith are currently enjoying lavish holidays in the Caribbean (8k a week villa) & Klosters, Switzerland with their families when these very people are telling us that we are all in this together. Clearly they are not in this together, they are enjoying privileged lifestyles whilst we are seeing increases in our fuel, vat, cutbacks just about everywhere, increased railfares, this is highly insensitive conduct my our MP's but not surprising as most are out of touch with reality.

Or, if you like, We're in this together

panettoinydog · 03/01/2011 10:11

northernrock, I hear your beautiful voice of reason amidst another tired politics thread.

northernrock · 03/01/2011 15:01

Thanks Panetto. I usually feel so unappreciated Grin

GabbyLoggon · 03/01/2011 15:20

time will tell Monty...I suppose Camerooney played it more sensibly staying at Chequers. Even the tory mail has rubbished Ossie .Osborne.It seems the tory papers want a Tory government..Surely theyalready have one in everything but name

tuggy · 03/01/2011 15:29

YABU

This is THEIR money, not yours. Its not on expenses or anything like that. This is a man, who earns a salary, spending his money on a holiday. Happens up and down the country every day.

GabbyLoggon · 03/01/2011 15:52

tuggy, true up to a point..We d.ont know what Osborne is claiming on expenses..He is an elected politician with vast wealth at his disposal....who is making decisions which cutspoor peop.les money. Some people take the side of the poor ...others defend the rich at all times. The choice is yours and mine. diddums Tuggy.. Hny "Gabby"

KindleTheSky · 03/01/2011 16:00

YANBU he is a git and would burn your granny on his fire to keep his family warm.

GabbyLoggon · 03/01/2011 16:52

Kindle The word GIT brings back memories an MP stood up in the Commons and called someone a "greasy git" .He was chucked out, but we laughed like a drain..

ccpccp · 03/01/2011 19:09

The politics of envy.

I certainly hope there are no Labour supporters having a go at GO on this thread. Their own politicians set a new benchmark in taking freebie backhander holidays from wealthy donors. GO has paid for the holiday out of his own money and isnt selling his countrymen down the river for a place on some board of directors somewhere when he retires.

(I hope Wink)

At the end Labour politicians were cheap as chips and they didnt care who the buyers were.
The damage will take years to repair.

northernrock · 03/01/2011 19:39

Actually I think that when people go on about the scroungers on benefits that is the " politics of envy"
" why should we hard working people support them" blah blah blah.
Maybe the Daily Mailites are jealous they are dragging themselves to work every day to pay the mortgage when other people don't.

tethersend · 03/01/2011 20:17

It's so very dull that any time a Conservative policy/politician is criticised that it's assumed the critic is a Labour supporter.

Poor debating skills.

northernrock · 03/01/2011 20:26

Anyway, my arguments are not really about politics

My objection to the current policies is mainly an economic one.

Having said that I do have a deep seated loathing for a certain type of Tory politician: Because Osborne went to a slightly less exclusive public school than Cameron, Cameron calls him the Oik. That's the mentality we are dealing with here.

The Oink would probablybe a better name for Osborne anyway. Grin

FishKebabs · 03/01/2011 20:30

tuggy, so what sacrifices do you see GO making seeing as he coined the phrase "We are all in this together", perhaps he won't be able to send his children to uni? maybe cycle instead of using a car to save on petrol costs? he ain't going to make any is he, obvious, the phrase he coined was to make us think that he is one of us, plainly it is just another useful meaningless phrase from a politician who has never had to experience hardship.

PinkIceQueen · 03/01/2011 20:59

If he'd gone to Pontins, maybe it wouldn't have gone bust Grin

ccpccp · 03/01/2011 22:06

"It's so very dull that any time a Conservative policy/politician is criticised that it's assumed the critic is a Labour supporter." - tethersend

You're either Conservative or Labour, or choosing someone else and voting for them by accident.

I guess your vote counted for Tory this time then tethersend? I bet you are loving it Wink

Thats beside the point though - my post was targetted at Labour supporters. LidDems are 100% on board with what the coalition are doing, so I didnt didnt post for their benefit.

ccpccp · 03/01/2011 22:26

"Actually I think that when people go on about the scroungers on benefits that is the " politics of envy"

Are you sure northernrock?

The only people who are envious of benefit recipients are those who are barely keeping out of benefits themselves. And its not really envy is it? Its more a hatred of being taken for fools while the 'savvy' undeserving get rewarded.

tethersend · 03/01/2011 22:39

"I guess your vote counted for Tory this time then tethersend? I bet you are loving it Wink"

Oooh, loving the fact that you're guessing who I voted for.

I'm more important than I realised.

Anyway, I'll let you get back to your They did it too style of defending indefensible Tory hypocrisy.

It's a tricky one. We will all (apart from the very very rich) be feeling the pinch one way or another, but you cannot expect someone to see how it affects you when you earn four or six or ten times what they do.

But if affluent people stop paying school fees, or new car payments, having tradesmen doing things instead of DIY, eating out, paying cleaners and gardeners, having extensions, moving house, taking holidays, and employing others, the whole economy suffers.

We have had to tighten our belts considerably in the last two years, but the average earner driving past our house would not see that. All they see is a big house, and they assume life is easy, and we are the blessed untouched. Not so. It's all relative.

lifeinCrimbo · 03/01/2011 22:59

I think we have misunderstood them. When they say "We're all in this together", they mean all the MPs are in parliament together with their £millions and their fat salaries. When they say "big society" they mean "Wow there are many people in britain". When they say We wont cut the NHS, they mean we wont cut any ribbons for new nhs buildings...

Ummm ok they have sold us down the river. Par for the course with the tories. Bit disappointed by the libdems though, they are very divided over this whole coallition, although I much prefer it to a completely tory gov.

lifeinCrimbo · 03/01/2011 23:09

FellatioNe, actually the opposite is true. To boost the economy, the best people to direct money to are the poorest - because they spend it straight away on necessities that they have been lacking.

With the rich, there is only a 'trickle down' effect which means the economy will only trickle, rather than flow. Also, as you can see from the OP, they spend it abroad too much.

FellatioNelson · 03/01/2011 23:11

What necessities? If it's truly necessary then we all need to buy it - rich or poor.

lifeinCrimbo · 03/01/2011 23:22

If its truly necessary, the rich will already have it. Bear

It would be wonderful if the rich stopped paying school fees. Think how education would improve in this country! Maybe we could have selection based on ability rather than bling. Grin

northernrock · 04/01/2011 14:28

I have to admire your name FellatioNelson. It's almost regal Grin

northernrock · 04/01/2011 14:43

You may be filled with hate for "savvy" benefit recipients (or scroungers as I am sure you will have it)but I am not.

No system of welfare can be ideal.

In the system we have most people put money in the pot and that money is used for the benefit of anyone that is in dire need (including me if I need it-including you if you need it)

If a very small number of people take advantage of this system, I don't agree with that, and I wouldn't want to do that myself, but I would rather a tiny minority got away with it, then that we didn't have this system in place.

The majority of people who make use of the benefit system have worked in the past (they have put into the pot) or they will work in the future.

This thing that has permeated certain sections of the media about "them" down the street who are thumbing their noses at decent hard working people seems to me to be borne of a terror that someone, somewhere might be having a better deal than you, and they don't deserve it.

I don't care if they are. I don't want to be them. If they would rather do nothing with their lives I don't envy that.
Similarly I don't envy arrogant Tories who inherit all their privilege and have no clue how most people live.
