to be upset that "we are not all in this together" i.e Skiing in Switzerland with George Osbourne

It makes me upset to read that the likes of George Osbourne & Zac Goldsmith are currently enjoying lavish holidays in the Caribbean (8k a week villa) & Klosters, Switzerland with their families when these very people are telling us that we are all in this together. Clearly they are not in this together, they are enjoying privileged lifestyles whilst we are seeing increases in our fuel, vat, cutbacks just about everywhere, increased railfares, this is highly insensitive conduct my our MP's but not surprising as most are out of touch with reality.

I meant it in a sympathetic way.

I didn't vote for them either btw. I think it was a ridiculous statement; ill thought out. Much like the 'Back to Basics' fiasco. The Tories really need to consider whether their soundbites sit well with their own circumstances.

However, I still think I have no right to dictate how he spends his money; only mine.

Quattrocento · 02/01/2011 19:51

Actually, following that analogy, rather than sending GO to Butlins, we could guillotine him

A la lanterne les aristos

Oh yes.

tiredemma · 02/01/2011 19:55

I think they should be burnt at the stake, especially Osbourne. He has a smug Tory boy face that I would really like to slap.

Niceguy2 · 02/01/2011 19:57

Northern No, the current policies are bourne from necessity, not some right wing think tank.

We either make cuts now or the markets make us cut later. Pain now or more pain later.

And I simply don't understand how people are so short sighted that they are blaming the Tories. Surely its blindingly obvious that its the overspending from the last Labour govt on stupid projects like the ID card, buying fighter planes to fight the Russians and not to mention a mountain of benefits all paid for from borrowed money.

northernrock · 02/01/2011 20:00

Quattro

The deepness of the cuts, and the speed at which they are being implemented cannot fail to shrink our economy.

The effects won't be felt for a little while, but they will be felt. And not just by part of the country, as with Thatcher's policies of the Eighties, but by everyone who is not actually rich, and at a real human cost.

In terms of the New Labour government being to blame-this began with a global credit crunch.

True, New Labour's policies did nothing to protect us from the bubble bursting, in fact they did everything they could to encourage irresponsible lending and banking de regulation, but the Tories(as a shadow cabinet) were right on board with all of the same kinds of policies.

I am not that bothered about party politics, I just think that the current plan will cause far worse problems than it will solve.

Yeah. Off with their heads. I'll be in the front row.

Quattrocento · 02/01/2011 20:01

...

Wars in Iraq
Expanding the public sector in real terms by around 60%

... Glad they're out of office. Useless bunch of incompetents.

Mind you, this lot might be worse

We could guillotine all politicians of every hue, just to be on the safe side and protect us from further governments?

montysorry · 02/01/2011 20:02

It's not just the last labour goverment. Governments have been living outside their means for years. The boom/bust has always seen us right as the good years paid back what we owed from the back.

Ironically, GB's conviction that he's ended B/B whilst keeping us in boom made the whole thing so much worse.

montysorry · 02/01/2011 20:05

Personally, I think the fiasco that is tax credits is one of the worst policies Labour ever introduced.

Yes, it helped thousands out the poverty trap but it is a short termist, ill thought out, over complicated logistical nightmare.

missymayhemsmum · 02/01/2011 20:07

Of COURSE we're not all in this together. This is a government led by rich men for the benefit of rich men. That's why they've broken just about every pre-election promise already and are mouthing inclusive platitudes while pursuing ideological cuts that are going to affect almost every family. They promised to be 'the most family-friendly government ever' but have not honoured the promise to pay enough midwives to keep services safe, and are cutting tax credits. next we're going to see huge cuts in all the services families use, like libraries, health visitors, leisure centres and schools. Totally ideological, and hugely anti-women.

northernrock · 02/01/2011 20:07

To be fair to Labour though, the fact is that public services were so decimated by 1997 that they did need building back up again.

It'[s not as simple as-we overspent, now we have to literally spend nothing. All that does is bring everything to a grinding halt.

So yes Monty, I agree with that.
But it is about far right policy. A lot of the rhetoric of the current lot is to do with the morality of being rich or poor, and the actual existence of the welfare state at all.

And all governments waste money on pointless rubbish.

orienteerer · 02/01/2011 20:08

It's his (and his wife's) money, he can spend it how he likes, if that includes Klosters then good luck to him.

northernrock · 02/01/2011 20:09

Actually, It's his parents money..

Quattrocento · 02/01/2011 20:10

Northern and I are united in anarchy here

In fact it might be said that we're in this together...

montysorry · 02/01/2011 20:15

Well Quattro, they do say political leanings are circular rather than linear so far left and far right meet up somewhere. Grin

northernrock · 02/01/2011 20:15

Fire up the limo. I'll get the cake. We can throw it at the little people through cracks in the tinted windows.

MrsThisIsTheCadillacOfNailguns · 02/01/2011 20:15

what orienteer said.

orienteerer · 02/01/2011 20:16

"Actually, It's his parents money.."...so what....? If my Father had developed Osborne & Little I'd happily hang on to the coat tails....or at least decorate my home with it[Grin].

thederkinsdame · 02/01/2011 20:20

We're all in this together, but some of us are more in it than others... ;-)

BootyMum · 02/01/2011 21:38

I'd like to know who or what charlieandlola was talking about when he/she said "Does everything have to operate at the lowest common denominator? How depressing"

Are you Sir Nicholas Winterton? Grin

FishKebabs · 02/01/2011 22:04

tethersend, I am not jealous of rich people going on holiday, my point is that George Osbourne coined the phrase "We Are All In This Together" so I take it he means we all are going to have to make sacrifices, so regardless of Osbournes personal wealth what sacrifices is he making, not his "luxury" Christmas ski holiday by all accounts. I just begrudge being told by a politician that we all must suffer when clearly they personally never will be Angry

tallwivglasses · 02/01/2011 22:23

Fish, from experience (no links!) you'll always get the 'it's their money, good for the economy' - type reaction. But UANBU. It sucks.

claig · 02/01/2011 22:38

I'm rather glad that we are not all in this together. I wouldn't want to spend time with George Osborne in Klosters.

newwave · 02/01/2011 23:26

Yes we are all in this together it's just that some are in the shit and the Tories are in clover

flippinggorgeous · 02/01/2011 23:59

We are all in this together but some of us are more in it than others. Two legs goods four legs baaad.
:)

tethersend · 03/01/2011 00:18
