frozen roast potatoes are for emergencies not for Christmas day

I made a double chocolate baked cheese cake for Christmas with the in-laws - they didn't eat it and chose tesco value chocolate cake over my homemade dessert. I had to laugh - my dessert was yummy and dh and dd both ate mine. dh was horrified that his family were so rude and also by their taste buds.

I was alarmed when I went to the fridge on Christmas eve for dd's milk to see no sign of a Christmas dinner. My assumptions were correct - all from the freezer - even the veg including roast potatoes and yorkshire puddings to go with the Iceland roast pork and lamb.

Luckily, my aunt made a fab Christmas dinner on Monday so at least I've had real Christmas dinner.

Don't mean to sound snobby, but I come from a family that enjoys homemade food.

Well good for you and your perfect christmas ..you know what, some of us like to do it our way

GetOrfMoiLand · 31/12/2010 15:21

YAYYY

I have not been on MN for over a week, come on and the first thing I see is a thread about frozen roast potatoes incorporating middle class V working class spurious arguments and everyone piling in with twopennorth, including my much loved mumsnetters of the year, LeQ and Fellatio.

My opinions-

-all frozen veg except peas should be banned, it's shite. Yes OP it is lazy to serve this on any day, especially crimbo.

-pre prepared veg in foil trays is acceptable in normal circs bur not on christmas day

-roast potatoes are easy. In fact the whole of chriostas dinner is a piece of piss. PLEASE can the world stop fretting about cooking what is a ponced up roast lunch.

-OP: your cheesecake was probably vile, is one of those things which you may think is easy however can taste rancid in unskilled hands.

  • I am working class and common, but a posessor of excellent taste, one does not cancel out the other, y'know

Happy new year mumsnet
Grin

Lequeen you are unbearably smug and judgemental and....boring.

So, you are perfect. great.

Hmm

But why do you feel the need to put other people down (saying that using frozen tats equals being Royle Family type person Shock????!!!!).

Why do you try to make others feel bad who may well have made a HUGE effort sourcing and organising the food, making lovely gravy, getting everything right but maybe taking once or two short cuts....Are these people really scum to you?!

I would so like to live in Lequeens fantasy world ....not

GetOrfMoiLand · 31/12/2010 15:25

One of my long held christmas traditions is to prepare all the veg the night before, whislt drinking from a huge vat of mulled wine with amaretto chasers.

I normally do it on my own but this year dd joined me in the food prep and drinking.

The carrots were the last thing we did and they were all different shapes and sizes as we were tiddly and didn't give a shit at that point.

It was lovely. Best bit of christmas.

foxinsocks · 31/12/2010 15:25

I love frozen veg. Can have broad beans all year round! And frozen fruit. And even frozen roast potatoes. Marvellous.

We waste far less veg since buying predominately frozen stuff.

oftenpurple · 31/12/2010 15:27

Haven't read the whole thread but am wondering what constitutes a roast potato emergency? The mind boggles.

Surely if someone else is cooking, it's up to the chef how and what is prepared. If they had asked for your input and you'd specifically asked for 'fresh' roast potatoes, I could understand your point. Otherwise, I'd sit back and enjoy having someone else prepare my meal.

My one sadness is not having a chest freezer (would be the same size as the kitchen).

My kitchen isn't big enought to swing a friggin hamster. Or even a dung beetle. So no, congregating in there isn't an option. Hmm I don't see the big deal tbh. We all had a lovely christmas, everyone enjoyed themselves and cleared thier plates so I'd say it was a success.

And I owe it all to dear Aunt Bessie Grin

usualsuspect · 31/12/2010 15:35

It was a great day though, much better than playing boring old monopoly ,even the wilko christmas crackers went down a storm

foxinsocks · 31/12/2010 15:37

We had pre prepared roast pots, have a wii and watched the Royle Family on Christmas Day and I can totally assure you, we had a marvellous time :-) and were none the poorer for doing any of the above!

Chandon · 31/12/2010 15:38

You are so Marie Antoinettish, with your " congregating in a big kitchen....blahblah, why doesn't everybody live like me?!"

Come have a look over here, or with the poster above, who have small houses or kitchens.

guess it is hard to imagine.

Whilst you are buying your couture, you should get a top saying: "It's wonderful to be me Grin"

foxinsocks · 31/12/2010 15:39

Oh gawd Usual, ds got the new monopoly as a Christmas present so we had to have 4 games argh! At least the new one seems to be shorter (either that or it's just easier to bankrupt yourself and ensure the game end quicker!)

GetOrfMoiLand · 31/12/2010 15:40

DD has a wii, and other than the first few days of excited play, it has gathered dust ever since.

usualsuspect · 31/12/2010 15:40

I had a lovely text from my dd thanking me and saying how much they had enjoyed the day so I must have done something right ..even though aunt bessie did feature
