I loved it!

Really really did not enjoy last year's special and was concerned that Caroline Aherne had lost the touch - but all is forgiven this year - really really brilliant! Xmas Grin Even DH enjoyed it and he would claim to hate the show, so his laughs really were high praise indeed.

I love the Royle Family and the bittersweet funniness of every single exchange. It made my Christmas day! MPD

FleeBee · 26/12/2010 19:35

Today is my birthday and my parents wrote my card "To Denise" I'm totally insulterated Xmas Blush as in all good comedy it's funny because it's true. Xmas Grin

PS I'm not called Denise in Real Life and do occasionally look after my own children and cook dinner!

Curiousmama · 26/12/2010 19:59

Xmas Grin FleeBee but do you do cup-a-soup with a twist? Xmas Wink

moultie · 26/12/2010 20:01

It was absolutely beautiful, written so perfectly, really funny but touching too. I loved the cringeworthy dinner chat with poor Saskia squirming at their crassness and Dave as gormless as ever. Missed Twiggy though.

thenightsky · 26/12/2010 20:05

anotherplace I once saw a documentary about Ricky Tomlinson and he was nothing like Jim Royle at all!

Thank goodness.

groak · 26/12/2010 20:08

Hmmm, didn't really enjoy it this year: it seemed too slapstick, whereas before it's been a brilliant mix of coemdy and seriousness with sentimental bits n (queen of sheba was fantastic, the scene where barbara was doing nanas hair in teh bedroom and while they were chatting she told barbara that her wish f not going in a home had come true after asking if she was a burden and sue johnston knelt behind her crying? that was fantastic) and there was nothing like taht in this episode..

BelligerentYhoULE · 26/12/2010 20:11

We enjoyed it - the Baileys was the best bit.

But I do think that the whole Denise/Dave = crap parents thing is getting rather overdone; not funny anymore just rather cringe-making.

I loved the bit where Dave said he didn't know if it was his friends in the other pub or not because they were sort of crouching down - and I loved the Swastika bit!

kerstina · 26/12/2010 20:13

I watched it again earlier on the i player and i am not sure whether i am going mad but on last nights episode did they forget to pull his pants down and then when he turns round you can see there is something is in his pants ? Well when i watched it on the iplayer he appears to pull his own pants down so seems a different version ?

sobloodystupid · 26/12/2010 20:15

Watched it about an hour ago. 'Twas brilliant. Cheryl's fatsuit is so realistic! Was hoping Twiggy might be in too...

stenogirl · 26/12/2010 22:11

Loved the bit where Saskia asked Barbara if she needed help and everyone looked at her like she was mad!

WeWishYouALUCKYChristmas · 26/12/2010 22:52

"when are you gonna kiss my baubles Barb?!!"

Even my straight-laced parents were cracking up!

WeWishYouALUCKYChristmas · 26/12/2010 22:54

groak both my parents were in tears when Joe sang the song at the end (sorry for not knowing what it's called) as both their parents used to sing it to them to get them to sleep. FIL said the same today. (All Irish). I think that was the sentimental bit Smile.

BibiBlocksberg · 26/12/2010 22:55

In stitches again now WeWishYouALuckyChristmas.

Had forgotten about that already - the giant bauble with Nana's face on it set me off tittering anyway and then Jim coming out with that, classic.

I'd never watched it till Christmas day. We were round at the inlaws and they had it on. Everyone was laughing so much but DH and I were sat there totally bemused by their reactions and didn't find any of it funny.

daffsntulips · 27/12/2010 08:05

Who was 'Swastika' in Corrie???

KenDoddsDadsDogEatsTinsel · 27/12/2010 08:15

She was Zoe who had a baby and sold it to Gary and Judy Mallett.

sheepgomeep · 27/12/2010 18:27

I've met ricky tomlinson a few times and yes he looks very similar to jim! He has family round my area and my big claim to fame is when he helped me back my car out of my space in B&Q's car park because he's parked his car far to close to mine! He is lovely though and very down to earth.

stillbobbysgirl · 27/12/2010 18:55

Ricky Tomlinson recently donated £1million to a childrens hospital in Liverpool and was REALLY pissed off when it leaked out as he wanted the donation to be anonymous.

He might look like a scabby git, but he is truly a king amongst men in my book!

ScatterChasse · 27/12/2010 19:23

Mrs Fruitcake, I have to admit, halfway through I suddenly shouted overexcitedly said "Oh, she's Anna in Downton Abbey!"

It had been annoying me all the way through that I couldn't remember who she was.

And I loved all the bit about his proposal. Was she going into labour at the end?

Bunbaker · 27/12/2010 20:51

I preferred last year's. I still enjoyed this one though. I love the fact that there is no artifical laughter.

The actress who played Saskia played a maid in Downton Abbey recently.

beachholiday · 27/12/2010 20:59

THANK you KenDodd. Never seen Downton Abbey or Life on Mars and kept coming back on this thread hoping I'd figure out where I knew her from !

She was very good - it added an extra dimmension seeing the Royle family thru her reactions.

I thought Anthonys acting was good- very understated. There's lots of larger than life stuff going on already, and it seemed fairly realistic that the Anthony character would develop into an adult with a sort of placid affectionate tolerance for his family.

stressheaderic · 27/12/2010 22:16

Saskia was played by Joanne Froggatt, an excellent actress in my opinion.

Loved this year's Christmas ep, much better than last year - didn't like it when they went 'on location'.

Don't think it's been mentioned yet here but loved the bit about having toad in the hole for tea, but only ending up having the hole.

christmaseve · 27/12/2010 22:41

I watched it on Iplayer as I wasn't concentrating in Christmas Day Blush. Loved this years. Agree it's probably overdoing the bad parents bit but loved Anthony and the way he was played down. He has done so much better for himself but still accepts his family as they are.

I noticed that they don't smoke anymore.

My fav bit was the quip about Denise missing the nativity play because she was waiting on 'those all important DNA results'.

BurningBuntingFlipFlop · 28/12/2010 00:12

I love then singing Alesha Dixon "Does he wash up.."

angelfire · 28/12/2010 10:51

Hvae just watched it on i-player.

Spamhead.

Ha ha ha

lOVE LOVE LOVE THE ACTRESS WHO PLAYS CHERYL
