To bore you with another baby/chocolate thread?

Following on from the PP's question re her 6 month- old, tell me what age you gave your baby their first chocolate or sweet?

Mine is 10 months and I was just assuming most people left it until age one. But I suppose this is a bit arbitrary.

Mine are 10 & 11 yrs old and I have got no clue at all.

Nor do I know when they lost their first tooth.

Or which one of them took their first steps just before their first birthday and which took them just after their first birthday.

I assume people who do remember must write this stuff down.

I can't even remember their first words. Blush

I could say this makes me a bloody awful mother but instead I choose to believe that it is proof that none of this shit really matters anyway. Wink

It really depends if you have other children around. If you do then it's bloody unlikely you'll be making the decision. You're lucky if chocolate is the only thing shoved in their mouth...

DS was probably around 13 months- I know he hadn't had any at his first birthday but it wasn't long after.
DD, well she ate a nik-nak off the floor at soft-play at around 6 months so there was little point in restricting anything after that!

Hecthe halls, it makes you sound like a mother who doesn't go around boring the pants off people with stories of what an early age their child was when they did x or y or z

I have no idea about mine. My sister's lot were always around and handing round dog biscuits bits and bobs.

My ds had a tiny taste of birthday cake at one. He is 3 now and he a piece of chockate cake on his third birthday. Between the ages of one and three he has had sweet stuff (the odd bite of cake, biscuits) a handful of times

I give him the special baby biscuits sweetened with fruit juice and fruit. I never give him chocolate at home, he has never had a chocolate bar and never sweets or lollipops.

I won't deny him sweet stuff like cake or chocolate at parties etc but I don't allow sweets at all

Everyone Is different and I'm not hear to say there is a right or wrong way - although I really do not see the point of giving them sweets ( choc and biscuits nit that bad)
Some people have an extreme reaction to the way I am with my kids which makes me wonder why but ibthink teaching them sweet stuff is occasional treat is good, but each to their own!

My DD3 has three much older siblings and so has been introduced to all sorts of unsuitable crap (sweets, chocolate etc) at completely unsuitable ages. She could tell the rustle of a crisp packet from 20 metres away at 9 months (proud mother emoticon) despite refusing to eat any solids to my knowledge and no food apart from my milk. As far as I can tell there are no ill effects.

My MiL gave my DD some milkybar when she was looking after her whilst I attended my Grans funeral. She was 3 months old! When I went off my head was a touch Hmm she defensively explained to me and DH that it was made 'with all natural ingredients', I had to laugh.

DD is 2.3 now and has started having chocolate from her advent calendar, but is much more a savoury than sweet fiend, so I'm guessing the early introduction didn't do her any harm

Thanks for all the replies. I've had a good laugh reading most of them!

Poor MrsK having to be so defensive when you're only giving an honest opinion!

I think I'll let her taste some chocolate at Christmas as she'll be only a month short of one, and I don't want someone else to have the fun of giving her her first chocolate! Which I know they will if I leave it much longer!

well I had grand plans like MrsK. However in reality at 6months he grabbed a chocolate finger from another child. He has a bit of whatever we are eating.

When I was making truffles for christmas I fed him chocolate to keep him amused!

Dd is now 13 months and recognises chocolate wrappers across the room! I guess her first taste was around 6-8 months, Ds (11 years old) gave her some and I decided it wasn't worth having a heart affect about! She's small, healthy and very active despite dh feeding her chocolate buttons daily! She had a chocolate finger lady week and stuck it up her nose!

I think she'd kill to get to chocolate! But I'm hoping moderation now will result in a sensible attitude to it laterin life rather than her binge eating forbidden foods!

DD had some choccie last week at her nursery xmas party (9 months). She'll have a little bit more on xmas day.
She attempted blw with a chocolate cupcake at 4.5 months old. Luckily I don't do baking so it was in a plastic wrap.

Apparently when I was 2 and a half I fed my brother (4 months) old a whole bowl of chocolate pudding my mum had made when she went upstairs to change her top.

Think reality gets in the way of being too precious sometimes!

I don't believe in indulging an already apparent sweet tooth. My ds is also 10 months, when he has a sweet tooth he has pureed fruit, yoghurt or some pomegranate seeds...I've even started using smooth peanut butter (oragnic and as low in crap sugar I can find) on a rice cake (only once a week, after everything else has been exhausted).

When he's older I'll take a view, but he has 7 teeth, I don't want them rotting!!

dd1 was 9 months old when she had part of my choc muffin in a coffee shop whilst we were house hunting (which is why I remember it). She looked like she had just reached heaven.

dd2 was 5 months when a helpful toddler gave her a choc digestive. She hadn't had any solids yet and the toddlers mother ran screaming across the room to try and stop it happening, so again a fairly memorable event. I remember finding it quite funny, so obviously the ad's were working by then.

my oldest had her first chocolate for easter that means she must have been about 14 months old. dd2 was about 10 months ds was past 2 as he was dairy intollerant as a child and we were very careful. (even today i have noticed he monitors his dairy intake quite naturally never eating large quantities)

dd3 was 8 months she was babylead weaned and helped herself to chocolate cake ..

We had a verly long car journey - 5 hours and DD was 10 months old. We were 20 mins from destination and I'd run out of her normal snacks. She had 3 chocolate buttons (half at a time) and then she didn't have any more until she was one - chocolate cake on her 1st birthday.

I never restrict her but often at parties she'll choose fruit over chocolate or cake. She's nearly 3.

My DS was over 2 before he had chocolate as he was dairy intolerant. He had biscuits and stuff mainly if I was having a biscuit or we were in a cafe or something.

DD must have had her first chocolate at around 6 months as we BLW so she just had some of whatever was going.

They seem to have a sensible attitude to chocolate and sweet stuff.

They both like fruit and DS eats a tonne of veg, but isn't fruit sugar really bad for the teeth too?

DS1 - first birthday cake
DS2 - found a box of MY truffles and ate about 8 of them at 10 months
DD - none yet..probably do the same.

The older two have a sweet tooth, but so do I, but they will eat just about anything.

DS is 2 and I can't remember! Definitely before 11 months as we went on holiday at that time and XP kept giving him loads of sweets, I was cross.

I also vaguely remember a MN meet up at the end of that summer - so he would have been between 8 and 10 months - and he found a pack of biscuits in the buggy on the way home. They were those M&S biscuits with the massive amounts of chocolate on and he ate an entire one Shock I have a picture of him somewhere looking very pleased with himself... I didn't freak out too much so he must have already had chocolate by that point.

DS1 (PFB) was over 2. DS2 (NSC) was, ahem, considerably earlier, shall we say. If it's of any interest, DS2 has a wicked sweet tooth, whereas DS1 is not that bothered, so maybe there is something to be said for limiting it when they are v little
