To expect to be informed about illness

QuadMummy · 21/12/2010 16:35

Am I being unreasonable to expect to be informed that the friends that I am planning on visiting, on ill? I went to my friends house the other day (which was planned 3 days before) only to get there and find their son was home school ill (only a cold) and that my friend and her partner was also ill with a cold. Once I got there, I couldnt make excuses to leave, but I was sat there desparately trying not to breathe in their germs (I'm 24+ weeks pregnant with quadruplets ffs!)

But everyone has a cold this time of year
if you go into a shop, onto a bus , in a cafe you'd be exposed to the same amount of germs
life goes on with colds otherwise everything would be shut down

fibernachi · 21/12/2010 16:38

YABU

If it was chicken pox or other highly infectious and potentially serious illness YWNBU.

Who hasn't got a cold in the winter? If it bothers you and you want to avoid it, ask if anyone is ill when you make arrangements.

chitchatinsantasear · 21/12/2010 16:40

Well if I were your friend I would certainly tell you! So YANBU, WANTING to know, but as otheres have said, at this time of year everyone's ill! My DS2 has been on and off ill for the last 4 months!!!

Gaston · 21/12/2010 16:42

It is likely there are lots of colds around. But if you had been visiting me I would have warned you, especially as you are pregnant with quadruplets (wow! congrats btw!)
and you never know if it is going to be more than just a cold if it was their first day or so of symptoms, there are some nasty flu viruses arond.

Gaston · 21/12/2010 16:43

around even x

atswimtwolengths · 21/12/2010 16:49

For god's sake, how can she be unreasonable? She's expecting QUADRUPLETS! She HAS to stay healthy.

Some people here really seem to post without reading the OP or thinking.

Pancakeflipper · 21/12/2010 16:51

Cold and that flu bug are zipping all around. If I avoided everyone with a runny nose or cough I'd not see anyone until May.

Sickness and runny bums are another matter.

Hulababy · 21/12/2010 16:51

I think knowing you are pregnant with quadruplets (wow, congratulations btw!) they should have thought on and told you. I imagine you have to take really good care of yourself.

agedknees · 21/12/2010 16:55

YANBU. I would have told you I had a cold if you where coming to see me.

Take care. And congratulations.

Myleetlepony · 21/12/2010 17:41

Check with your doctor, but mine told me that once cold symptoms are visible the infectious stage has passed.

JaneS · 21/12/2010 17:45

YANBU at all. No point you worrying when you've got plenty else to be thinking about!

I would be concerned if for no other reason than that once the babies are born, they will almost certainly need special caution around seemingly trivial colds. The poster who said 'who hasn't got a cold' - would you visit a mum with premature babies on the same basis? I'm guessing not but if I were pregnant with quads, that's the way I'd be worrying!

JaneS · 21/12/2010 17:45

Ps- congratulations! Smile

MumInBeds · 21/12/2010 17:48

YANBU - I always make a point of letting people we are due to meet with if we have colds or the like and none of my friends are currently pregnant.

Mrsfred · 21/12/2010 17:49

I would have telephoned you first. I think it is only fair to warn someone if you have a stinking cold so they can make their own decision as to whether or not they want to risk it!

Also, if their child ill enough to be off school, then it must be a pretty nasty cold.

minipie · 21/12/2010 17:51

YANBU

If you weren't pregnant then YABU, but pregnant (especially with quadruplets!!) is another matter! You must be knackered anyway without catching a cold!

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 21/12/2010 19:43

Welcome to MN Quadmummy.
Sadly I think half the world has a cold or worse atm.

verytellytubby · 21/12/2010 19:46

Pregnant with quads. Congrats. Only a twin mum so hats off to you Xmas Smile

Everyone has a cold. I wouldn't think to tell anyone as my kids have a permanent sniffle from October - March.
