I am sick. Flu like thing. Spent all of Sunday in bed unable to move.
I didn't call in sick to work as I know boss wouldn't believe ne. So, I dragged myself in, in the snow too.

Boss sent me home after about 10 mins as it wad clear I was not well.
She asked why I went in. And I answered and said that I hadn't even gotten out of bed on Sunday.

Then she said' well that's where we are different, I don't give up. I don't lie in bed'

I said, well I haven't given up either, I am here.

But I'm pissed off.

So you should be. I hope you sneezed in her direction Wink

gallicgirl · 21/12/2010 10:55

Yes you are right to be annoyed.

You shouldn't be in work if you're sick. Think I'd have made a sarcastic comment about being different on account of having a personality.

readywithwellies · 21/12/2010 11:00

She is a bitch.

Below is the correct way to deal with it.

Oh red, you look terrible. Why did you come in?
Oh, I see. Well, I am really grateful you made the effort but you really should go home. Merry Christmas.

But most people are bitches.

GrendelsMum · 21/12/2010 11:12

Are you sure it wasn't one of those badly phrased beliefs like 'if you just ignore flu, it will clear up all the sooner'? I have a friend who genuinely believes this, with the result that she drags herself around for weeks looking sick as a parrot, all the time saying 'I just keep going, and I'll be better soon'.

Kitta · 21/12/2010 11:55

I fecking hate people like that they wander around spreading their germs all over which means by the time it gets to me or one of mine will have mutated and be even worse.
It?s irresponsible and lets be honest if you are ill you will not be giving work 100%.
It is so much better for everyone if you stay at home with your germs have a few days in bed and recover. Instead of being a germ spreading martyr.

And in my honest belief that have never been really ill/had flu ?cause if you have true flu mind over matter be damned you?re staying in bed

Sorry not aimed at you redderthanred, but at your boss have a bit of an issue with people like that

GetOrfMoiLand · 21/12/2010 11:57

Your boss is a wanker.

Let's all pray together and hope she develops humumgous great piles over the festive season.

Kitta · 21/12/2010 11:57

Really seething on your behalf

Limara · 21/12/2010 12:08

redderthanred - your boss was being a martyre. WOO bully for her woop woop Hmm

Was just a way for her to make herself feel better by putting you down. Classic really. Ignore and go chill outSmile

swanandduck · 21/12/2010 12:10

The fact that you felt you couldn't ring in sick becaus your boss wouldn't believe you says it all about her really. I would honestly rather get nowhere in my career than behave like her.

Hope you're feeling a bit better.

redderthanred · 21/12/2010 13:31

nope. i feel like shite.

Though i have made it out of bed and am laying on the sofa.

I dont think ill be at work tomorrow either.

Boss is a martyre. good for her.
doesnt get you anywhere does it.

( know this, used to be a bit like that myself sometimes)

But i know ive not been able to get out of bed.
and i also know how damn awful i feel

and how bored i am

and how there is 1001 other things i need to be doing than laying about becuase i cant stand up for more than 2 mins.

sounds like a very ungrateful and insensitive boss.

WingDad · 21/12/2010 13:37

I had one of my guys come in the other day who looked like death warmed up and then some. I went to him to ask why he had come in and he said, "'Cos I thought you wouldn't believe me if I phoned in sick."

I felt really bad Shock Of course I sent him home and everything. It seems like there's almost a taboo subject arising about calling in sick. It's probably because so many people pull sickeys these days that people who are genuinely ill feel they have to prove they are ill by going to unnecessary lengths. Things need to change.

And yes, your boss is a high-class arse.

shirleyhyypia · 21/12/2010 13:37

ime, all bosses are like this

"well I got in in the snow.."
yay for you.
you live on a main road and have a car. i live in the middle of nowhere, on a hill, rely on public transport, and (last time this happened) am pregnant!

hairyfairylights · 21/12/2010 13:40

well, I can tell you that I am not like this, shirleyhyypia. and it sounds like wingdad isn't either. so there are good bosses out there!

I always tell people, if you are too ill to work, please stay home and give yourself time to recuperate, plus we don't all want to catch it!

togarama · 21/12/2010 13:50

She's both insensitive and foolish. Would she really rather that you came in and infected the rest of the workforce too? What excellent staff management skills!

I've been in bed since Saturday with a flu bug that's turned into a chest infection (only the second time in my adult life I've had to go to bed though illness). My bosses and work colleagues have been absolutely fine about it. I've done what I can from bed with my laptop (mainly just to get my calls diverted, ensure others can find files I was working on etc..) and people are grateful for this but there's no question that anyone thinks I should understake the 1.5hr each way commute in the snow and then sit at my desk coughing, vomitting and infecting everyone else in the office. It would just be stupid and counter-productive.

Hope you get better soon. It's only this afternoon that I've begun to feel more human. Nasty bug.

KatieMiddleton · 21/12/2010 13:58

I had a boss like this. She told me once how she'd left her hospital bed to make sure she opened the office. I made this face Hmm and replied I employ better contingency planning so I wouldn't need to. I also never had problems with staff taking the piss with sick leave because I treated them like adults.

No point struggling on making everyone ill when a day in bed will probably sort it out.

hairyfairylights · 21/12/2010 14:13

ha ha great come back Katie - I used a similar one on some woman moaning about men leaving toilet lids up, due to germs. I said 'only if your toilet is germy' LOL.

Secretwishescometrue · 21/12/2010 14:21

She sounds like a total Bitch and I hope she cought whatever awful flu you have (hope your feeling better soon)

harassedinhertinselpants · 21/12/2010 14:25

I have a boss like yours.... it's really rotten.

Of course when he's snowed in or got a sniffle it's totally different.

Hope you feel better soon, don't rush back.
